    A prequel to the Great Siege was the 1551 ravaging of Malta's sister island of Gozo, where the whole island's population was decimated and over 5000 inhabitants were taken into slavery. While fighting along with the knights, over 7000 Maltese died during the second wave in 1565. I am deeply priveledged to have my ancestors standing among the victorious survivors.

    As a Maltese I wish you could have mentioned the very important maltese militia that defended the fortress of Birgu, saint Elmo and Sanglea. If not due to the stubborn and brave resistance the knights would have lost surely. Somewhat 3 to 5 thousand souls took up arms with the knights to defend thier home. It is debated how Dragut died. Some sources say it was a Maltese sharpshooter while others say it was cannon shrapnel. This victory is still celebrated till this day.

Can you imagine, swimming in the harbor and creeks, to defend it from the Turks, who also swam out to destroy the chains and wooden barricades they put up? I mean these people are swimming and fighting with axes and swords. This really helped the knights win, but very few people talk of this....

It comes from an excellent combat leadership, a magnificent combat discipline, efficient combat support systems, effective combat service support systems, a type of combat leadership, a pinnacle leadership and most of all the faith of the leader will surely boost the morale of all combat units that will surely give defeat to an enormous monster enemy.

    Your version of this siege is the most accurate i have found. Quite much of the data you provide is correct and accurate. Specially when you talk about the Spanish reinforcements.
    Some extra info:
    Villafranca del Bierzo disembarked with 9.600 Spanish soldiers on September the 7th who immediatly attacked the Turks with "TERCIOS" while the fleet sailed to the south side of the island to taunt the Turkish fleet. After that, a Maltese traitor almost ruined everything when he joined the Turks but gave them the wrong numbers (said 5000 Spanish disembarked) so the Turks cancelled the retreat, It was Álvaro de Sande with a single unit of firemen (Arcabuceros) who fough off the Turkish counterattack making them run for their lives straight to their boats.

Most of the mastery and brave warriors where actually Maltese no names as they had no title but had the courage and will to turn the tide of battle. Something that the Hospetalliers failed to achieve without the help of the population back in Rhodes.

      The Maltese always "forget" that in addition to the Knights and Maltese militia there were a few thousand Spanish and Italian soldiers and they were most of the professional fighting men. These soldiers were the majority of the defenders of St Elmo. Also, it was a Spanish fleet and a Spanish army that lifted the siege as the Turks were ready to winter in the island. The Maltese defense was heroic enough, no need to ignore the role played by Spain and its Italian allies.

    The biggest mistake the Turks made was in failing to take M'dina, the old Maltese capital. This was a base for the Knight's small cavalry force that not only harried the Turks at every opportunity but played a pivotal role in the siege of St Angelo, when just before it was almost overrun, an attack by this small force led the Turks to think they were being attacked by a much larger force of the long rumoured relief force, forcing them to retreat.

    • @SkunkyBrew
      @SkunkyBrew 5 лет назад

      Some of the Turkish leaders wanted to take Mdina first! However, the overall commander in charge felt the taking of the 3 fortresses themselves would be enough. They planned for a relatively short siege. They were wrong!

      @@SkunkyBrew Dragut was a naval man with little or no knowledge of land warfare, Mike only put in command to stop Mustafa Pasha and Piale Pasha from throttling each other. The Turks did take a look at M'dina but were put off a siege after seeing how well appointed and defended it seemed to be. Knowing how much trouble the smaller and less defended Fort St Elmo was causing them, they decided to pass on trying to take it. Little did they know that the walls were mostly manned by uniformed corpses, placed their by the remaining defenders.
