  • Hunter S. Thompson pioneered Gonzo journalism - but there would be no Gonzo without the artist Ralph Steadman, his longtime friend and co-conspirator. Steadman’s illustrations for stories like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" defined their freaked-out feel. He stopped by Studio 360 and sketched Kurt Andersen.

Funny how he just utilizes the pen (which appears to be a piston/cartridge refill), and DIPS the thing into the ink bottle, just LIKE a 'stylus' dip.

some artists would panic if they drip ink on their drawing!!! Ralph makes it art!

I believe he is using a Lamy brand fountain pen. This is interesting because the pen has its own built in ink supply. But he is also dipping the pen in Dr. Ph Martin's watercolor dye to overload the point and give the drawing that splattered Steadman effect.

Probably figured this out by now - but I'm pretty sure it's a Lamy Joy

I agree with you, Brian, that he is using a conventional fountain pen as a dip pen -- an eccentric choice but obviously it works for him. I also agree that it resembles a Lamy and, as Mariner Hoff suggests, it looks like a Lamy Joy. I have never seen a dip pen holder of this shape and size. A dip pen would normally be used with India ink, or something heavily pigmented that would be hard to clean out of the fins of a fountain pen nib in repeated use. But, the Lamy pen is quite inexpensive, and I imagine Ralph can replace them on a regular basis if he wants to. I appreciate the interesting posts on this thread.

@@danmagoo right you are... ruined my lamy and fountain pens using india ink... never used PHmartin - but am going to give it a shot

@@CC-vw1cs Yes, thanks -- Looking again at this video, I see at 2:07 that he is apparently using a water color ink (Ph Martin Radiant Concentrated Water Color), not an India Ink. It does look amazingly black for a water color, if that's what it is. (But it's still unusual to use a fountain pen as a dip pen!) Also very black, but fountain pen friendly: Noodler's Ink. Noodler's has a few types of black - right now I'm using the ink they call "Heart of Darkness," very black and no prob in any of my fountain pens so far. Have fun!

His bottles appear to all be Dr. Ph. Martin’s concentrated liquid watercolors. It wouldn’t be a good idea to hang that portrait. Even the darkest of the liquid watercolors will eventually fade and disappear in direct light. I’m surprised that he isn’t using an India ink for the line work, but I would never second guess Ralph.

Awful drawing. OK he was under pressure, but that's what most of his art looks like really. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate wacky messy style when its done properly, but that was a mess.
