  • We invest in our own and others' development because we want to see a change but being clear on whether we're looking for a "technical change" or an "adaptive change" is important to ensure we invest in the right kind of development.

Good video that gets to the heart of the differences in these leadership development strategies. Concrete examples are good. Thanks!

Thank you for providing a clear explanation on this. What would you suggest the vertical development options are? Would the individual need coaching?

Great question! There are a number of ways to support your, and others', vertical development. Not all coaching is developmental in nature but seeking out and working with a coach who understands adult development theory is one option. Deliberately exposing yourself to diverse perspectives/different ways of making sense of situations is another way, as is regularly taking the time to get up on the 'balcony' to reflect on how you're being and influencing the systems you're a part of. For an overview of the evidence we have on what supports vertical development, here's a research summary I wrote: www.aensleetanner.com/blog/creating-conditions-for-growth-in-adult-development

While I obviously don't know the specifics of your unique situation, a general suggestion I might make for someone in their college years is to practice cultivating one's 'internal voice' as described by Marcia Baxter Magolda in her book, "Authoring Your Life": www.amazon.com/Authoring-Your-Life-Developing-Challenges-dp-1579222722/dp/1579222722/ref=mt_other?_encoding=UTF8&me=&qid=
