- Circular dolly shots are some of the trickiest shots to get right, but they're also the most useful when it comes to spicing up long phone calls or other static shots. We'll look at how to do them easily.

Canon Masterclass - Кино
I was literally just planning a shoot around a doorway dolly not wanting to use track. I’m happy to hear the stability tips!
What a sweet setup!
I've got an electric slider. It's easy enough to setup, and use. But there are some notable drawbacks to it (vibrations & payload limitations). This seems like a much better solution. Great video!
I like to call these "orbital" shots, too. Thanks for the overview!
Love it!!! You broke it down!! But still out of my budget but I have make shift ideas I want to use 😏😏😏
appreciate this - want to build my own dolly
"The operator can sit on it adding that 100+ pounds of the operator to the dolly" My guy, I'm over 220 pounds. hahahahaha
Make. Art. Now. (Josh Yeo) made a product just for this type of shot! It makes it a lot more accessible to low-budget filmmakers. :)
I was thinking the exact same thing. I thought he was going to mention Josh's Orbit.
I looked this up after you mentioned it. The issue with overhead circular rigs (motorized or not) is that they can't take much weight and you always have the stand in shot unless you rig it to the ceiling.
The best one I’ve seen was in Maya’s best of me featuring Jada kiss 3:22 minutes in its amazing
I had a steel/ball bearing "lazy susan" (Chinese restaurant supply) that I use for small toys, and its big enough for a person to stand inside.
So relevant, just saw bits of Facebook's meta announcement and some shots are shot manually like this as well.
Drone shots also include this but some have automated features to make this easier.
Strafe brings such a gruesome image to mind. It is consistent with the nomenclature of cinematography though. Another fantastic tutorial from the Crimson Engine. Great job!
Thanks! I remember trying to master it in Call of Duty :)
@Crimson thank! Engine What Kind/Amount of Zoom would you prefer for a circular dolly shot like that?
Nice video Rubidium. I have used a similar setup several times. I used a Fischer dolly for a music video which was a dream to work with. I had a focus puller and a dolly grip to help. That was my favorite setup for this style shot if location and budget can make it work
Thanks Griffin! The electric powered dollys, with the ability to boom the camera, are next level! I wish I still lived somewhere I could easily rent one :)
@rubidium - how is that Benro tripod doing? Is it holding up?
Good stuff. A few points to consider: 1. You actually don't have to own all the gear, doorway dollies are really common rental items and are affordable + easy to operate compared to heavyweight professional dollies. 2. Your editor will be really happy if you can start and end your shots stationary.
You can start rolling the camera when it's stationary, but yell action when it's moving..
I just use a Marbl Orbit. There’s an outdoor version too with speed rail.
I have to do a circle strafe in my short film around two characters speaking to each other. Don’t have that kind of budget or crew so I’m looking for super cost effective alternatives. Seems like something the new DJI cinema camera makes easier for solo operators to achieve but still not perfect… or totally cost effective.
Hey Eric! Check out curved sliders as a one man solution. The can only do 3 feet at a time but you might be able to cut around it. bhpho.to/3bBgJVM
I always think of Edward Norton in the phone booth when I think of this shot.
"Oh, this will be interesting"
- Gets notebook out
- Proceeds to watch yet another infomercial
I thought of an invention that would be lightweight, compact, portable, quick and easy just because these shots, along with rack-focus, are my favorites bc they put dynamics into the scene, help in character support and lend well to pushing the envelop in concert with lighting/audio.
And what is this invention
question...:-) can you fix the angle of the circle with this dolly? I mean can you make perfect repeatable circles over and over again??
in theory, yes. if you want to be sure, use circle track
Also what about a onewheel and gimbal.
Ahhh, You gave us an advert for a dolly instead of teaching us how, see what you did there.
Have u ever seen a Béla Tarr movie?
Hehe, u should. Just check it out 😁
How come your video (medium shot of yourself) is always so soft?
Or… just buy a DJI 4D camera…
