I found on the new Magic Keyboard it has a port on the left side in the hinge so you can charge the iPad freeing up the port on the iPad for a thumb drive or whatever else.

Yes, this is a great feature. I find this most helpful if I need to edit a video or photos and I have those files on another device.

old ipad is alteast an inch closer and that's huge. it makes it more touchable and ipaddy.
the new one is more of laptop like position

You have a good point there. I think if I use the keyboard, I will be in a computer-like mode more than a tablet mode. Thus, the screen being slightly further away is a plus, especially in tight spaces. However, I can see your point if you want to interact with it. I think the new keyboard's tracking feature limits the amount of finger touch needed.

my experience was just the opposite. the new 13 is less balanced, more top heavy and very wobbly on uneven surfaces. it almost topples over under its own weight. it made me return the new 13

That has not been my experience at all. Interesting insights though. I figure with the lighter weight of the iPad, they have more room for spacing and balance measures.
