That's why I think the MCU did such a good job giving it to Sam, he has spent his entire life seeing what power does to people. the military, hydra, the US government, the avengers, hell even John Walker. He saw absolute power corrupt absolutely and she remained unchanged. He wears that sheild with all the weight of every black man who has died under the stars and stripes, and the legacy of his best friends. Because that sheild doesn't just hold Steve's Legacy but Bucky's too, and Peggy's. To me he is Captain America

I just realized that the reason why Steve smiled so much when he heard Spider-Man was from Queens was because Dr. Erskine was.
Wasn't that just because they both were from New York? So they are like neighbours/rivals?
I like to believe Dr Erskine is what Peter Parker would have become had he just stayed a normal kid, just a good hearted scientist who wants to do good for the world.
Well he didn’t just think about Erskine’s similar residence. He also saw himself in the kid. A young man who fights for what is right from a small burrow in NYC. Humble beginnings
I think you’re overthinking it
Me too
"I don't wanna kill anyone" gets me every single time
I mean, he DID kill a lot of people, then again that’s justified considering they were Nazis and it was during World War 2
Me too. He's a good man willing to do what need to be done, but he doesn't want to do it.
@@LightSkye thats why i love frank millers batman, he forces batman into that situation, zack snyder talked about it briefly durng his recent joe rogan podcast, unfortunately sometimes you gotta kill people
@@systemofadown945 Yeah, the problem with that is Steve is a SOLDIER. Fighting a WAR. Even later against Hydra after he was thawed out.
The difference (to me, and I think to others) is that Bruce Wayne/Batman is NOT a soldier. He isn't trying to change the world or save it. In the end, he's just trying to keep any child from having to go through what he went through when his parents were killed.
The best expression of Batman's creed I thing I've seen was from the character sketch in the old DC Heros RPG:
"I will not kill."
"I've dedicated my life to stopping those who think that they can take life from others."
And yes, I know that isn't "realistic". Neither is anything about superheros.
The ideal is the point.

I like that Erskine admits that this is a test. Trust goes both ways, and he can't build a virtuous super soldier if he's not willing to trust the people he picks.
It's the look of exasperation when he says yes 😅 like it should be obvious

I remember the age old saying “a good warrior fights not because he hates his enemies for no reason, but because he dearly loves what he’s defending.”
It started and ended with Iron Man.
But Cap was chronologically the first avenger and brings not only the mentality, but also the leadership to this ultimate group of heroes.. Not to mention his blazing fire of rightiousness and honesty above even his own life.
All it took for me to see that beauty was this scene, but man did it get better in his next movies as well.
What a character.
Not perfect, but damn close to it.
Caps trilogy is what carries the mcu. Only iron man 1 was good. Caps trilogy ties into the whole avengers group, civil war was the paragon of mcu. The Russo brothers made the mcu as epic as it felt, NOT Feige.

@wehateJox - I missed the part where that's my problem!
That I don't like bullies line hits me everytime
i like the line "I don't like bullies, i don't care where they're from" it shows no matter who the villain/bullies came from what planet, Thanos an alien, to Rogers, they're still bullies. Stayed true to his word and himself as a character.
Steve Rogers is not amazing because he is Captain America. Captain America is amazing because he IS STEVE ROGERS
He went on to stand up to the biggest bully in the universe
A little small theory, you know how in civil war when cap asks Spider-Man where he’s from and he says queens, well cap smiles and says he’s from Brooklyn. The man who gave cap a chance at proving his worth is from the same place Spider-Man is, which coincidentally he’s trying to prove his worth to Tony. Some connection or something? Idk, but I just thought it was something pretty cool.
Honestly I don’t know if I’m the first to think this or not. Either way I think it’s pretty cool.
There’s also comment with the theory that Abraham worked on the super soldier serum in his flat at Queens and it leaked, infecting the spiders until years later one bit Peter cause it’s an absolute point in time (assuming you’ve watched What If)
0:54 Now his reaction to Spider-Man in Civil War makes sense
If only more people paid attention to the lessons from this movie. The amount of people being bullies and thinking they are righteous nowadays is incredible. We could use a little old fashioned wisdom.
Dumb theory: Erskine stayed in Queens during ww2. Maybe some of his serum leaked out and mutated some spider. Generations later, this spider spawned the offspring that was capable of transmitting the effects of the serum and at the same time, due to the spider's genetic mixed up, it carried along with it the spider like abilities as well.
Actually I don’t think that theory is far off. 😀🤓
They probably won't go that far for the Spider, it'll likely just relate to The Web and all that, but they'll just be low-key with it.
That would still explain very well why the spider bite gave super strength. The spiders would just have to multiply throughout the years to live long enough to bite peter
Except that's nothing at all like what happened in the original spider-man story. The reason a "mutated" spider exists in the first place is because many organizations wanted to replicate Erskine's Super Soldier serum. You had Oscorp with their genetically engineered spiders, Bruce Banner with his gamma-radiation tech. Heck, Captain America is actually called "Weapon 1" because he's the first successful Super Soldier born out of the Weapons Plus program, Wolverine is called "Weapon X" because he's the 10th generation of Replica Super Soldier Serum.
Ok so why isn't everyone in queens spider people by 2012?
He was Worthy right at this exact moment itself
Also, this mirrored when Steve asked Peter Parker where he was from. He and the Dr were both from Queens.
Years later Dr. erskine smiling from heaven for believing in a kid 🥺❤️
Y'know, I've always thought of Steve Rogers as a big, muscular soldier from WW2 for so long, I almost forgot that he was just a little, skinny guy from Brooklyn who never knew what he would go through in the future. It's wierd, yet refreshing.
This scene alone is why....
Steve Rogers **IS** Captain America!
I just realized this is why Steve smiled when Peter told him he was from queens he was remembering the doctor.
You think he could remember that over 70 years later
........ I’m a small guy. So you could imagine the only one I care about is the one everyone overlooked.
I love the way they represented this story
Tucci was so underrated in this movie
You easily forget that was him.
Yeah he should have gotten an award for his performance, it was that good. He owned this role
Looking back on Phase 1, the MCU is quite literally built on the backs of Thor, Steve Rogers and Tony Stark. Thor was the muscles, Tony was the brains, and Steve was the heart and soul that never gives up.
This is why Steve is my favorite Avenger.

Three things in this film define Steve Rogers as a character. 1. Standing up to the bully in the alley despite getting knocked back down. 2. Wrapping himself around a grenade to protect his team even though he didn't know that it was a dummy grenade. and 3. Saying "I don't want to kill anyone I don't like bullies." Steve's abilities didn't define him, his shield didn't define him, but his heart that is what defined him. Steve was just an everyman who loved his country and just wanted to protect those he valued close to him qualities every man should strive for.
That's why he could lift Mjolnir
Quite arguably, the most heroic of all the heroes.

It sort of is mentioned obliquely in the movies but in the comics Captain America fights for the dream of what America could be--the best of what it offers--not the American government. Sort of like the idea of America being great "again" versus the idea that we have never quite lived up to our ideals as a nation.

One of the best Marvel movies period.
A small thing I love is that Steve isn’t bothered by Erskine’s immigrant status. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Steve’s family originally from Ireland?
Either way, I think this is a subtle way to show Steve’s character and why he was perfect to be Captain America.
I don't think it's mentioned on camera in the movies (but maybe is in the ancillary material?). In the comics yes, Steven Rogers' family is from Ireland.
