I think the mods are adding to the game, the game has been revived by the modding community because of it.
I was gobsmacked to see one of my favourite childhood games being modded, it makes me feel like it has risen from the ashes.
Plus, new maps and mechanics have been added, making missions more varied and interesting than before.
I might have to disagree with your comment because of these points.
