I go back and forth between Zatoichi and Troubles. Troubles is relatable and slightly existential while still being incredibly fun and lighthearted, always feel happy listening to it. Zatoichi is just so trippy and atmospheric, I know it's cliché but I truly do feel like I'm in another world when I listen to it. Plus slowthai rapping over a breakcore beat in the chorus is one of THE coolest fuckin' things I've ever heard, always gets me hyped.
I absolutely love his baby keem inflections on the hook of X-Wing. Very few albums actually tempt me to play the entire project on repeat, but this is one of them

Honestly this is album of the year for me. Denzel‘s growth as a lyricist and an artist is on for display and the various styles of production and gas features help fit the sound excellently.
Thought Kendrick would take that spot from him before MM&TBS released, But honestly the albums conceptually are very similar and I think Denzel executed it better. but both have two totally different vibes but I'm giving Denzel the edge as of rn.
@@camronstudenka9377 The albums have very different goals imo Mr Morale seemed like a real introspection and therapeutic. Melt My Eyez feels like Denzel's come out the other end of that introspection and is looking at the world as the new him sees it.
Production is so crazy good on this album. The beats like put me in a state that I haven’t felt before. The lyrical melodies, the meanings, the vibes, it’s so crazy!
I am a sucker for segues and this album gives me a lovely dose of them. I was lucky to catch the stream where you reacted to Walkin originally. Walkin is definitely one of my faves, a real vibe with great flow and rhythm. This whole album has great beats and I can't wait to look at his other albums. I love seeing T-Pain in there too, great choice as you said for collaboration. This whole album sound so good, especially with good headphones. Makes me want to be as good of a rapper as Denzel. That whole idea of being a good rapper that is coincidentally white is what I want to add to my music skills.
I feel like its more instantly likeable than his other albums but also less chance of it being instantly loveable than his previous releases, meaning you're more likely to vibe with it but not be blown away by it than something like a Taboo or Imperial, just because of how subdued and contemplative it is compared to them. That's why so many consider it a massive grower. Its no question his greatest project so far in my opinion and I say that as someone that already has two of his projects in my top 100. But at first I was disappointed, just never would have thought it would have ended up as my favourite release.
Seeing him go from a meme with ultimate, to making some of the most amazing and creative hip hop of the 2010s was shocking to say the least. This is easily his most mature project to date and some of his best bars and beats I’ve heard as well. You also make a great point in the description. It would be so difficult to see a hip hop album that levels with this. (Also I do know that ultimate is a pretty good song and imperial is also a great project as well)
I've been a fan of Denzel since Imperial first came out and I've never disliked anything from him. First listen to MME I liked it. I listen to it almost every day now and after a few listens it convinced me that he is a top 10 rapper of all time.
this album takes a couple to few listens, but at some point, every track just hits my main problem was actually x-wing for the first couple listens, didn’t really like it with how his voice sounded and the instrumentation didn’t stick with me, but I grew into at after listening to it a few times overall, amazing album, the wait payed off so well, zel once again delivers with an amazing project
Even with my favorite albums I have to hear them multiple times to really comprehend all the sounds and figure out if I like it or not, but this is one of the rare albums where I feel like I can immediately pick out my favorite song, it’s hacker by death grips.
How you said that this album is giving you western and futuristic vibes is super on point cos denzel said cowboy bebop was an inspiration for the album and those 2 words perfectly encapsulate that show. Just shows how masterful denzel is in getting his message and themes across.
Angelz stuck with me, Walkin was my favorite and also Troubles. The intro track is underrated as well. God dont make mistakes is still my AOTY but this is a close second
i think the genre and theme-bending you described is part of the movie feeling aspect of the album, a lot of the promo for this has a film-like style that makes this "movie" of MME sound so good
This album is a very concious/ boom bap rap album with some interesting sonics. While Denzel had some political comments on this album and its very common in the sub genre of rap, he did it very well and was very modern. He comments on social media, the government, and validation with many other comments. The best songs on this album however good they are never they never pushed the listener to the limit and just kept it very safe. However the album sounded good and well crafted so it not that much of an issue if it doesn’t push the limit. Overall this album was cool and would recommend.

Love the review this is quickly grown into one of my favorite albums ever, but I wish you would have dug deeper into the word play and lyricism of the tracks a bit more like pointing out lines that stuck to you. Lines like “I’m watching massacres turn to running mascara.” With the word play of massacre to mascara or “Battling stress the size of Goliath, sling shots plus hard rocks these stones getting thrown.” Making reference to David vs Goliath with the sling shot and how he feels fighting his own mental stress. There’s pieces like that throughout the whole album even the features like T-Pain at the end of his verse saying, “The chopper makes beautiful music, play (a)round with it.”
The “Worst Comes To Worst” beat kind of reminded me of “The Blacker The Berry” by Kendrick but I haven’t heard that in little while so my brain might just be coming up with random stuff lol
this album is easily a 9/10. the only real complaints about it is the track X Wing was too long for it's own profile and didn't add much to the project thematically in my opinion, just a versatile cool trap addon, and in my opinion Sanjuro was the better song with more of a punch and correlation, but sadly cut too short, i'd love if those both tracks would just switch lengths. otherwise, this was a pretty perfect experience, it's actually insane, it's close to TA1300 but not there yet, but it needs more time and for it to sink. Denzel making this project is very reassuring. it's mega relatable to the stage in life that i am in atm, explained basically perfectly, the mental experience of wrong-doing, what life and the world does & what's going on in it, affecting our mindset and how we think, whilst crafting upon it with acknowledgement. phenomenal album, def my favorite this year
After a few weeks of the album being out, I have to say that this feels like the first time Denzel has taken an entire step up in enjoyablity and quality for me on one of his records. He has such a consistently solid catalogue but this is the first outlier that really feels like my standout favorite from him now. I have to disagree a little bit with the memorability of songs on Taboo versus this project too. I've actually always had the opposite issue with Taboo where it almost feels like it could be this perfect album but there's too many songs, especially in the middle that blend in for me. By the time i'm at Switch It Up, it kind of feels like I've been getting the same feeling from the last three tracks imo. Melt My Eyez feels like such a step up for me because he sacrifices some immediate banger quality to craft these songs with production that have already stuck with me so heavily, every song feels like there's this distinct identity that fulfills a different purpose of his mental journey. My upbringing on more alternative and conscious hip hop also just makes me click with the sound of this album a lot more than his previous works to be fair though.
What’s your favorite song here, and why is it X-Wing?
