at first when I read the title I thought it was a video about how to make money with blender
So in 3.0 it's still light years behind the actual USD specification. No layers, skeletal meshes, blend shapes, etc. Houdini and Maya already has amazing support for this. A few days ago I donwloaded the Lab USD scene from Animal Logic and it took literally seconds to open the whole thing in Houdini with textures, shaders, LODs, lights, cameras everything set up and ready to render. It totally blew me away. And I would really like Blender to have it too because moving data with FBX is kind of a nightmare most of the time. And white robots will not cut it.
Lightyears.... Like 3 months from now. Fbx is close sourced and was reverse enginered. Usd is at least open.
@@webinatic216 Oh.. Trust me I really wish it was that easy. Yeah FBX is closed but it's scope and complexity is much lower than USD's. That's one of the reasons why it was so "easy" to even reverse engineer it. With USD even if all the sources are available you still need years of work implementing it to spec. SideFX worked for years with Pixar to get Solaris where it is now and it still has a few years before it's production ready for the common folk too. This is one of the reasons Tangent Animations (aka Blender studio) has shut down. They made a huge undertake with USD and it didn't work out.

This is early alpha stuff, it will get improved over time, the support is there and will keep getting updated as time goes on, 3.0 super early still man
@ hasn't only Tangent Animation folded tho? or Tangent labs went down with it?
If USD actually becomes a full fledged thing in Blender, it will be a game changer.

It seems that USD is going to be more important than we imagine, it may be THE industry standard in a future. And while i like that we'll have a nice standard, i hate that Disney has anything to do with it...
Why? If it was Adobe I would understand but I don't see why Disney is a bad thing here
Disney and Pixar consistently do some of the best work in pushing and innovating animation, VFX and robotics technology. Say what you will about them, but they at least use the money from their projects (like the “live-action” Lion King) to create groundbreaking stuff like the Volume

How does this tie in with the work nvidia are doing with omniverse? There's a blender plug in on the omniverse roadmap
Yes there is, and up until now blender still doesn't have as much capability that other DCC have with USD, help was needed from Nvidia to develop the import, and since Omniverse would love to have blender as part of their connectors. it only sounds right for them to help develop the USD Pipeline support for better interoperability, not only for Omniverse but for other DCC apps.
The blender Omniverse plugin depends on having proper USD support as that's the shared standard that Omniverse relies on. Also Nvidia, Tangent Labs and Blender worked on adding USD to 3.0

Please tell me this is bringing the great real time simulations to blender… omniverse has a really good, real time fire/fume simulation… and man… if that becomes enabled in blender… game. Changer. If we get fluids and rigid bodies too… oh my goodness… 😍

Bruh. I saw USD and was like damn they finally made blender paid. Thankfully Facebook hasn't purchased blender after eliminating the countermeasures preventing paid blender.
What measures had Facebook eliminated?
Blender can't be paid, it's impossible ther licenses pretty much makes the software free forever, no one can buy it
