K-pop was never about the music. If K-pop was truly about the music then there wouldn’t be a visual position, fotg, a choreography, and such strict beauty standards. Let’s be honest K-pop fans care about the visuals way more than we admit it. Whenever predebut photos come out most people pick their bias based on looks. I remember when aespa first debuted everyone liked winter because she was pretty even though we never got to see her skills or singing. K-pop idols jobs are to be pretty, skinny, and decent at singing, and have a fake persona to appeal to fans. let’s be honest most K-pop idols are a manufactured and made to be perfect, hence why they’re called “idols”. Music is just a bonus

You say this like you’re making some groundbreaking point but, at least when I got in to kpop, nobody was trying to hide this. Though it was more like they had to pretty, skinny, and the main vocalist had to be incredible at singing while all the other members could be just decent, the main dancer had to be incredible at dancing while the others were decent, and the main rapper had to be… well decent, while the others didn’t even have to try.

Taemin was 14 when he debuted with Shinee, right? Yeri debuted when she was 14, and thats after being 'held back' a year. IU was 15 when she debuted. Then theres also BoA, Minzy, Suzy, Chaeyoung and Tzuyu, it's a long list.
IIRC, a lot of 2nd and 3rd Generation groups had several members who were 15-17 when they debuted. In fact the prevailing opinion at the time was that if you hadn't debuted by a certain age, you never would, and people like Kahi from After School (at 29) were more the exception than the rule. Heck, I remember talk about Ateez members being 'old' when they debuted, and they were in their early 20's.
In a roundabout sort of way, debuting as a teenager in a 4th+ Gen group is probably going to be better for them than if they were in a previous generation, as KPOP's growth and popularity not just in Korea but worldwide means there are going to be more people watching with a critical eye and calling out any bad behavior/mistreatment, perceived or otherwise. And one would hope that entertainment companies in Korea have learned how to better manage them as well, which given the recent increase in number of mental health breaks for idols does appear to be the case somewhat.
I am also not sure, what, if any, new laws regarding Child Labor have been passed and how those might apply towards younger KPOP idols as well is having an effect on their treatment.
All that said, I don't think we are going to stop seeing 15y/o's and maybe a few younger kids debuting in groups anytime soon.

Kpop is becoming like olympic ice skating. They get them as young as possible, train them in harsh conditions, give them improper techniques that depend a lot on their bodies being underdeveloped and lighter/more flexible and take advantage of their dream to manipulate them, because “if you don’t weight X, how can you be an idol? If you don’t look like X, how can you debut?” Its honestly disgusting.
The only future these kids are left with is quitting, injured, with a miriad of mental health problems like depression or anxiety and the everlasting thought of what did they do wrong for their careers to end. I look at recent 4th gen groups and I can’t see them lasting more than 3 years, because the industry (and public) wants them smaller, younger, cuter and full of energy so they can exploit them further, and the fans too, because the younger the idol, the more protective fans will be and much more willing to spend money on them.
Anyone younger than 16 years old (and that’s being really fkn generous) shouldn’t be allowed in the industry, to train or debut. They don’t have the emotional maturity or the mental strength to stand in the spotlight and go through the harsh, cruel and fkn abusive criticism and attacks the netizens and international fans will put them through, much less in these companies that do the bare fkn minimun for their artists or even less than that. With how important kpop is in Korea and being that it is the main thing international folks hear or look at from the country, you would think they would regulate this things more, get laws and/or have a specific section of the culture ministry. But they don’t, so these companies will keep exploiting children until they run oit of them.

The lack of talent needed + the lack of improvement all comes down to a lack of passion too! I mentioned this before (idk if it was under one of your videos or another kpop video) but trainees are so often trained to sound like a carbon copy of each other to fit a certain sound instead of seeing what sound suits them and then training them to improve in that genre ( same goes for dancing, they're taught the bare minimum to pull off kpop choreos without truly understanding dance as an art and how to be proper dancers, so whenever they do open style choreos rather than kpop choreos, even if they're 10+ years into the industry they still look intermediate). The companies crush the passion these kids have for music just to try and make a few bucks, and then wonder why their groups aren't as popular as BTS, who actually /had/ that passion.
Also, the hero complex thing annoys me /so/ much. Yeah, I feel concerned when an idol looks a bit down or tired because I know the industry they're in is grueling, and let's be honest we all care about the idols we stan. But isn't sending small little "hope you're day is good today" on twitter enough support?? Why do fans feel the need to blame their idol's daily fatigue on something they have NO proof of being the cause? We don't know them or what they're going through or feeling, and the best way to support them is NOT by screaming about some random BS to push your own "i am holier than though" agenda, but just by giving them a little heart online!!!
Sorry for the long post just ugh people

Reasons why idols debut at a young age: It is very difficult not only to become an idol, but also to succeed after becoming an idol. In Korea, where there is a culture where people try to keep one job for the rest of their life, unsuccessful idols have too little time to find another job and prepare for it once they become adults. Debuting at a young age is like taking insurance for a second chance for them.

About training system, I think Idols nowadays don't know what to excel or what their strength is. Not having any position make it worse , Like if that trainee is a better vocalist or have unique vocal tone , company give him/her good vocal lessons, or if the trainee has a dancing base , company will give her/him dancing lessons to sharp him/ her , but here they don't have any goal , they want to excel in everything and became a mediocre idol. Also some people are saying , idol "a" trained for 7-10 years why idol "b" from same group is better dancer ? may be because he/she wasn't especially trained for dancing, may be idol "b" already had a dancing background.
Let's me give you a example, Baekhyun and Chen trained for 6 months while Suho trained for 6 years(he supposed debut in Shinee 4 years earlier but he had an accident but he was ready for debut)but Suho is not main vocalist.Because both Chen and Baekhyun had training in singing before idol training , both of them used to sing in college bands ( obviously they are extremely talented, adept things quickly)But Suho is main vocal material if he debut in other groups. So I think we should see every aspect, and for trainee they should set a goal for themselves.

Another point for 7. Why aren’t we discussing the parents that allow their children into these conditions. These children can not sign legal documents on their own, if I’m not mistaken( please correct me if I’m wrong). So we need to look at the parents on this one. The companies are only partially to blame for subjugating these kids to trauma. Their parents are in support, even unknowingly, of companies exploiting their children for financial gain. Parents may of course not know what harm may be befalling their child or even that exploitation is even occurring. This also might beg the question of if Korean society (i.e the extreme and toxic work and school cultures, where harmful situations are normalized or pushed/worked through, and if you can’t do that your have to work harder to overcome your “shortcomings”) is also to blame for the parents not realizing that getting into the Kpop industry may not be a good idea at a young age.

i completely agree!! i feel like companies arent doing nearly enough for their idols, especially the young ones. if theyre debuting 13/14yo girls and getting trainees possibly even younger, some of them likely havent started their periods n stuff as well, adding to possible physical health problems as stress/eating issues can affect them
also what are parents doing????? i understand they want a child they can be proud of and show off to the world cuz i would do the same, also if kids are so desperate to be famous/be an idol without knowing the harsh working conditions you would want to let them follow their dreams, but its unfair that these kids are torturing themselves cuz theyre so hung up on their dreams that they end up hurting themselves over it. of course let ur child follow their dream but wait until theyre actually capable of making well judged decisions at like 16+ years of age, or when they at least have other qualifications so theyre not broke at 30 when their company forces them into retirement
the point about companies' handling of scandals/hate towards idols: YES 100% like is it really so hard to have a statement that says something like 'we have talked to _____ on the issue and are sorting it out with anyone else involved, please be patient while we fix this' instead of just bringing new groups with younger and younger minors who are getting sexualised to divert attention this doesnt help at all this just brings younger and younger uneducated kids and more and more problems, and encourages creeps to follow kpop, leading to assaults/crimes by saesangs

K pop would go so much further if they allow more freedom. Freedom with music, writing, concepts, personality and diets. A lot of things is too controlled and it makes things look bad. Plus the racism needs to be addressed and companies need to do research before taking other cultures for fashion/mv/songs. And actual acknowledgment and respect should be given to those cultures and races.
Plus all trainees who don’t debut need counselling/help if they decide to leave pursuing the industry. It seems that many companies just abandon the trainees they let go, after they spent and gave everything for the company. Or they keep them in the company as soloists but they get zero promo and help (Jamie, golden, Sumni, somi etc)
    That’s very unfair and exploitive.

A small differing thoughts on the toleration of mediocrity the longer you’ve been into kpop because as someone who’s been listening to kpop for 8 years now (damn…) I found myself getting into less and less groups because mediocrity is more accepted now. A new kpop opinion that I see becoming more common is that roles in kpop aren’t important or are needed but I think that’s because average idols are debuting so we don’t see much variation in skill sets within groups. Before in 2nd-3rd gen you could identify who’s main vocal, main dancer, the center because yes they got training for everything but idols had a subject to train harder in so youre an exceptional dancers or for me personally more importantly a exceptional vocalist and who was called an “all around idol” was limited compared to today who’s everyone is an “all around idol”. This could come from what the new demographic of active participating kpop fan want because the market is still growing and the current state of kpop ain’t for me.

I think they just keep them for years to make sure they have control over the trainees. It’s like putting a carrot in front of a donkey, to the point the get desperate. Then when they do debut they stay loyal to the company despite all the exploitive things they’ve faced. It’s like they work so hard but they can’t turn back or all the work is for nothing.

Kpop isn't about music, we have to accept that. It's more of like a series with ocasional songs, the "fun" part for the fans it's really the drama, the competitions (look how everyone goes crazy every survival show), the wins, the visuals, the shipping, etc. Anything else it's more important than the music itself and that's kind of genius??? These companies really are just marketing pretty skinny people who dance ok and lip sync, it's like tiktok lmao. Not saying that the music doesn't matter but it does seem to be the least of the worries. It's much easier to refere to a certain period on kpop by it's scandals than by the music.

Probably the most accurate comment. I feel like this is the situation with most kpop groups but if you are a solo artist, music is their first priority mostly and the main thing is kpop is just a part of korean music sure its the most popular one, but k- r&b , k-indie and k-hiphop these genre exist too and honestly they have better songs and are passionate about music.

    • @parsachoudhury6727

I wouldn't say it isn't music, because Kpop can be very creative and can warrant a lot of stimulating analysis from a musical and artistic standpoint (I'd say the main talent behind Kpop are the music producers and art and design teams behind the scenes 🤷‍♀️) and it can offer a lot of talent e.g. Hyolyn, one of the most talented human beings, like, ever, or RM, and actual genius. But I will agree that visuals, variety skills, personality, and even scandals, drama, and dare I say parasocialism is just as important. Sometimes, that's the main appeal of the idol. Wonyoung? Maybe not the most skilled idol in anything other than stage presence, but god damn she's doing more than anyone can dream of. Modeling, MC-ing, a new variety show appearance every other business day while juggling her idol career and dealing with the massive amount of hate she gets? Yeah she's a trooper in my book. And she gets all those opportunities because she's pretty and has a nice personality. So yeah, maybe it does have similarities to the Tiktok influencer trend in many ways, but it's more interesting, enjoyable and maybe even more demanding I would say. With more glitter and sparkle I think. Like if Tiktok produces models and "relatable" personas, Kpop produces celebrities

It’s a cultural thing. It’s not seen as ‘acting like a 5 yo’ to them. I watched a video by a Korean guy who said he found it really frustrating that foreigners find aegyo cringing and gross because it’s so normal to him, that he’s a 30 year old man that does aegyo to his girlfriend basically every day because he wants to. It’s normal for people in romantic relationships to do that to each other. That’s why some idols get uncomfortable doing it on tv because they find it somewhat intimate.

The thing about minors… I so agree. Not only cause I think 13/14 year olds have no place in such industry but also because it just seem so depressing to be considered a senior/old when you’re over the age of 26/27. I guess debuting such young children is a 4th gen thing mostly (with exceptions before that) we have yet to see how their careers will develop but from what I’ve noticed so far there would be 2 problems: 1. most groups have 7 year contracts and break up afterwards 2. Very few idols seem to live up to their previous successes solo. That would mean that these idols will be 21/22 year old when their groups disband and majority of them will probably not have a sustainable solo career and be considered ‘too old’. What happens next? A lot of them drop out of school to pursue a career.

I initially stayed away from kpop because of toxicity of fandoms that I read about, and that I wouldn't understand the main appeal of kpop. but over time I really enjoyed the huge passion and love when I see real kpop fans and how it made their lives better. I DEFINITELY agree about the level of talent in Kpop these days. Specifically, vocal talent. I'm so surprised that most of the top tier groups don't have a single strong vocalist among them. I got into Kpop back in the second generation when every group was anchored by at least one or two phenomenal vocalists, and if a group couldn't sing live, they were DRAGGED! These days, Kpop groups are essentially dance crews that lipsync to their own mediocre vocals and I just don't get it.

First: I'm watching some of your videos for the first time, and the way you present your ideas and opinions is very captivating. Your voice is clear, you don't speak too fast or too slow, and the background videos of choreo gives my brain something to watch while listening (I have ADHD, so all of this is super important for me when watching a video with talking only.) Like, even in some other videos I won't agree with one of your opinions, but the way you express it makes me enjoy hearing it regardless, especially if it helps me view something in a different way and change my mind about something. You give detailed explanations for your reasons instead of just saying "It's my opinion" as your only rebuttal. I've noticed a lot of kpop stans lately using the word "opinion" to bully and spread hate for no reason.
Second: Happy Birthday!! Honestly, I stopped "feeling like I'm getting old" when I hit 31, and other people have said the same. As long as you ignore societal pressures to "grow up" (what does that even mean? do what you want in life at your own pace, don't adhere to other people's idea of what a fulfilling life should be if it's not what you want, be you and do what YOU want and that's it) you'll basically feel exactly like you did in your 20s, just with more knee and back pain.
Third: I wanted to comment on #5 because I agree with this one the most in regards to the hero complex and kpop stans creating bigger problems since I see it the most. I know your view is more in regards to kpop "scandals", but my comment is more about social media. I see some twitter stans try "defending" their faves by bashing the fave of a person posting the original hate comment. Then people from that fandom join in to defend their fave by bashing the "defenders" fave, and it just becomes this all day thing of back and forth BULLYING and HATE fest. This happens almost daily in my fandom, and it's honestly so embarrassing to watch. People need to stop bashing other idols to defend their fave because it makes you look just as bad at the person who started it, and starts unnecessary fanwars. Not to mention, half the time the person starting it is a troll account baiting everyone in anyway.

Idols have access to the internet as well and they can very much see critics' comments as well and yet they just ignore the issue like what. I am seriously so fed up with this

Great video!! Two points I love that you brought up are Minors in kpop and Refusal to educate.
    - When I first got in to Kpop, idols were older than me, then the same age, and now they are all younger than me. It feels weird for me to be a fangirl of a 15-16 year old, and buying their merchandise. I feel like I'm eventually going to grow out of kpop. What's the point of listening to it, when eventually I won't be able to relate. It has shown me the invisible ceiling that exists in kpop.
    - As for them educating themselves, I always thought it was so funny how companies want to push their idols in foreign markets but never want to allow them in their own. Since I'm from the U.S I'll use it as an example. We are a mixing pot of ethnicities, if anyone is discriminated against based on race, religion, or skin complexion it's immediately looked down on.

Honestly it feels cruel to see smaller labels debuting these groups of young teenagers. They don't have the budget or legacy to properly promote these idols, even if they're talented as hell. The market is saturated, and chances are the group won't grow beyond maybe a small cult following. Furthermore, this is such an exploitative industry and literal children should not be exposed to the hatred and intense scrutiny they'll inevitably receive. I wish they could succeed, but I hope these young rookies idols aren't pinning all their hopes and dreams on these small companies.

You are completely right. I remember, when everyone freaked out because Jisoo and Rosie improved their dancing for HYLT, it's that uncommon in kpop that skills improve after debut that people still talk about it two years later.
    Happy Birthday to you Cheryl!🎂🎉🎁
And Happy Pride Month to the Alphabet Mafia 🏳‍🌈🏳‍⚧
