  • Scrapped the dual motor setup for a larger single motor setup! Really happy with this version! The lithium ion battery capable of 15miles of range, the high torque 80mm size motor and the FOC of the VESC 6 really makes this bike a joy to ride. Just wish I had invested in this setup at the beginning, but I guess I have to experiment and learn this stuff so you guys don't have to :)
    Huge thanks to Trampa Boards for supplying me with a VESC6! I don't like to endorse products that I don't completely believe in (which is why I rarely do reviews), but it has truly solved all of my ebike issues. Yes a VESC 4 is cheaper and works well on a lower power setup. But having had 3 die on me (ALL within the recommended limits), I really wish I had heard about the version 6 sooner!

    I read a few comments confused about the power and pricing, and since I know a bit about this kinda stuff I thought id try to leave some info. Yeah, 700 euro is a lot to spend on parts for an e-bike. But compared to a kit you can find online for a similar power/torque/speed spec’d bike, you’d be looking at closer to 1000 euro. A completed bike with this much power? More more 1800 euro if not more.
    I built my electric bike using a 3kw hub motor, a 12.5 ah battery, and a 40 amp 52v controller. That alone almost cost me $1200 US. When you consider the brakes I bought, with the bike frame, and the lights, and everything else, I’m in something like $1400.
    My bike has seen 40mph in ideal conditions, and done 650m altitude climbs without a sweat, but I suspect the bike in the video is capable of the same with some minor tweaks to the gear ratios.
    For what this bike is, with the care that’s been put into the design and reliability, it’s incredibly cheap.

      How much does it cost to get it certified though?
      I don't know about other countries, but over here if it goes over 25 km/h it's a moped and needs to be "road legal".

    I am sure it has been said before but here is once again from me.
    You got this all free space behind the seat tube and the tyre. That is a great place to mount the motor so that somehow is in line with the frame. That only the pulley is sticking out on one side and the cooling fan on the other.

      Hey guys, I'm currently in the process of making my own 3kw bike and I figured out these are probably the best parts rn:
      kunray 3kw 72v motor kit (includes the controller and a throttle as well as the motor) 275$
      72v 20ah battery (this is just a pre-made battery pack that works with the controller) around 275$ as well
      my best bet is amazon for these

    Hi Tom, Such a smart kiddie! Maybe a simple(ish) mod to relieve the squeeze on the motors by the small belt would be to incorporate a short shaft protruding from the back of each short belt pulley. A straight bar with a bearing for each shaft would hold the motors spaced correctly and relieve the tension.

    A much safer and neater iteration of an electric bike than the last version. Can't say well done as still illegal but some excellent engineering problem solving. As a motorcyclist I would always advocate using gloves, Tarmac at 30 mph will remove flesh and they keep your hands warm!

    Thank you fro great video. Is it possible to have some kind of clutch to avoid motor resistance while riding it as regular bike? What do you think about it ?

    • @TomStantonEngineering
      @TomStantonEngineering  6 лет назад

      It is probably possible, but adds complexity and removes the regenerative braking capabilities. To be honest, I only ever ride this bike with the motor running anyway, otherwise I'd use another bike. Applying a small amount of power to the motor whilst pedalling makes it ride like a regular bike

    Are the plans going to be uploaded to thingiverse like the V1? I just got the green light to start this project from the big sponsors (parents) The motor sensor is so trick! :) To me the kits' selling points are how it could mount to so many bikes, very clean minimal appearance, very practical in an urban commute. My wife uses a super-China e-moped, long range (40mi) not horrible speed but small wheels (rough) and HEAVY! What you have here is exactly the kind of power/weight ratio a 125lb guy like me is looking for, just enough to be able to get myself hurt on - perfect fun ;)

    • @TomStantonEngineering
      @TomStantonEngineering  6 лет назад +9

      I chose a motor based on lots of different things. Surprisingly speed is not an initial factor for me (this will probably change with larger vehicles), because gear ratios can always be adjusted. Usually the motor isn't the most expensive part, so I will tend to see what battery and speed controller will fit my budget. Then I'll work out a battery depending on what the maximum voltage and amp rating the speed controller can handle (60V and 80A in this case). Then I'll work out whats the largest gear ratio I can fit on such a setup (about 1:15 in this case). The 'hobby grade' motor used on this bike has a kv rating, which means the RPM it can reach per volt. So this motor is 160kv, therefore with my 50v battery, it can spin at a maximum 8000RPM. then using the diameter of the wheel etc I estimated about 36mph, which is plenty of speed. This might be completely different for larger motors as I have no knowledge of that field. So it's a bit of a juggle of components to get the right setup. Thanks

    Brilliant engineering and great challenge..been a lot of fun watching ur progress. When you take those runs and go flat strap, I get worried :) I don't see the point in going faster..if you want that - get a cheaper petrol scooter..second hand could get something that run around for 2 weeks on a full tank, for cheaper than you have outlaid for your project, and go a lot quicker, and be a lot safer. For the environment..I don't know if charging batteries from the grid/coal every night, is it any better than buying a few litres of petrol every 2nd week..solar is different matter? What you should focus on is going farther, at a safer speed

    Make the pulley as large as the wheel allows (that's how old bikes were made), reverse the motor over the wheel and make a scoop (that's damage protection, and you can hook yourself much better by using the mounts meant for fenders for example), Mount the pulley on the rim itself using holes drilled on the bottom and spaced with L brackets or simply bent thread. That's a lot more force you can apply than though the main wheel shaft + more distribution if you put say...15 such mount points. And mount the batteries under the frame with an aluminium bash plate. Frankly, in a bike like this, go as low center as you can.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 6 лет назад

      Also, try making an assisted pedal design as well, that should give a lot of thinking kicks. Not as easy as it might sound, plus, less dependency on batteries.

    hi i am planning on an electric recumbent bike (full diy) and i planned to use a similiar motor then you do in this video.
    What is the reason that it is going "slow". i have checked many tests and some guys in australia managed to go barely 100km/h with 5.3kW on a bicycle. Are you limiting the max speed with your transmission?
    Or did i miss sth else?
    I would be very happy about an answer :)

    Hi, nicely built bike! How are you coping with the motor not being waterproof? I saw in other vid that went "offshore" with it - do you protect the motor somehow?

    Tom, are you still using that Arduino to convert the twist throttle to pwm or does the VESC 6 have a direct input for a pot. Can’t see any throttle systems on the trampaboard site others than the wireless ones.

    Hey Tom, if you get a chance would you consider posting screenshots of your VESC settings in BLDC tools? I am running a similar setup on the bench and having some trouble with my motor.

    Very nice work!
    Do you think it is possible to mount the brake on the inside of the frame? Kind of inside the "triangle".
    Could save space and allow for mounting the motor on top of the wheel, where the brake now sits.

    excellent! very refined & lean system. you should be proud.
    Question: did you use any specialized program to create the 184 tooth pulley?
    keep up the great work!

      I downloaded a model of a HTD5 pulley from GrabCAD (If I remember correctly), then measured the tooth dimensions and replicated it at a larger size in another CAD software. Thanks!

    Tom why wouldn't you lengthen the belt mount the motor above the rear triangle with the pulley hanging out in the side to propel the bike you would have to change the direction the motor spins but would clean up the look on the rear and take weight off the single side??!

    Really fantastic stuff. Incredibly impressed by your engineering (in other videos too).
    Amazing to see the 3d-printed cog on the rear wheel. In PLA too.
    I'd be quite concerned about what bits might fly in which direction during a catastrophic failure. Either from that cog failing or the motor or belt coming loose at speed. Make sure you tie up your shoelaces! ;)
    Those lanes are just like the ones I grew up cycling around in Somerset.
    Keep up the excellent work. From what I've seen so far, expect offers from the likes of Elon Musk soon. Seriously.

    Thanks for sharing another great update to your Ebike down side is have you checked out the laws that cover it ? . . . .You will find that you need a motorbike licence , tax , insurance and a log box for your ebike all because there is no pedal assist.

    why not also mount the motor above the tire and inf front of it, right behind the seat tube. so that its not sticking out to the side so far and looks more integrated. (flip the motor assembly by 180 degrees)

    Impressive effort. However... with all that MPH available don't you think that uprating to at least a single disc up front might extend your life expectancy a bit? If possible I'd be inclined to try a twin hydraulic set up, one on each side of the fork. (I'm a pensioner who rode big fast m/cycles for years - remember, doesn't matter if you can't go. But it sure does matter if you can't stop!)

      And also read the Highway Code and read the legislation about the max power and top speed allowable before the cycle is deemed dangerous.
      Don't forget that a cyclist killed a pedestrian doing about 24mph... If you're doing 30 or more on a cycle and can not stop and you hit someone or something, you can end up killing someone, yourself or both of you...
      (off the .gov.uk site)
      ====================================================
      Its electric motor:
      must have a maximum power output of 250 watts
      should not be able to propel the bike when it’s travelling more than 15.5mph
      ====================================================
      and goes on to say...
      ====================================================
      Any electric bike that doesn’t meet the EAPC rules is classed as a motorcycle or moped and needs to be registered and taxed. You’ll need a driving licence to ride one and you must wear a crash helmet.
      ====================================================
      So there you have it folks. You can build your e-bikes all day long as long as you don't go over the limits...

    Can you recommend another ESC for a bike/motorcycle/cart in the 6-10KW range? So far I still could´nt find any equal to the one you do use here. There are amazing things that could be done with that compilation! Awesome work! But I really would use mudguards :D

    What is the advantage of this motor over a hub center motor ? Seems like it’s easier with a hub to build or is it experimental ? What about having a back pack with flexible solar panels to juice the batteries ?? I have a flex roll out that rolls up in my hand and makes 18 volts at 5 pm 6 watt. Is that worth incorporating ?

    Hi Tom, this kind of motor at which voltage works? I have an idea to spin the wind turbine when is not wind outside, hope it will work. But l need to know on which voltage works because l need to be 12 V. Thanks for your time and work, keep going man and why not maybe you build the same bike but for money this time ha ha. All the best mate

    Wouldn't it make for a cleaner install to put the motor inside the top of the rear triangle? Flip the motor 180, center its length on the bike's centerline . Build your mount to clamp around the seat tube, extend stabilizers to the seat stays if necessary.

    • @TomStantonEngineering
      @TomStantonEngineering  6 лет назад

      I considered this when building this V3, however I decided not to for simplicity. Moving the motor upwards meants running the belt up and over the rear brake. This would make the belt very long and therefore increase the possibility of it stretching under load and skipping. Also it would be more difficult to slide the motor for tensioning the belt. I'm sure it's possible, but I prefer the simplicity of this setup. Thanks

    Really keen to work this project but my question is ... are there calculations that 'easily' determine the ratio of the gears to the Kv of the motor? I am looking to convert a folding bike, so I only have 20-inch wheels ... and I want to see if I can use a motor I already have on hand (I don't recall the Kv off-hand), so what I need to be able to calculate is a rough starting point for the gear ratio based upon the Kv of the motor I have (once I check it out) and the wheel diameter I am using. I am not sure the 12 to 184 teeth ratio is what I'll need. So is there a formula you can use to get a starting point?

    So wish you tried it with a recumbent bike instead. You could easily half your air resistance and reach much higher speeds with a more aerodynamic model. Much greater break efficiency as well with the lower center of gravity. :)

    Hi Tom- great build- has inspired me to build a similar project- how are you applying the Regen brake on the VESC?..do you use the VDC channel 2- because i cannot get it to work as a brake- im wanting to use it also on my E-scoot - could you take a screen shot of the BLDC tool ?
    thanks in advance

    Great setup. I am interested if you made any changes to your 3d printer settings to get the HTD 5m profile to fit. I am trying to get some dimensions on my pulley to be more accurate ie the internal bore is almost 1mm to small. I have just purchased a MK3 prusa and this is my first printer. So should I be looking to adjust my cad file to compensate or should I use some sort of compensation in my slicer? Many thanks

  • @johnnybravoo9854

    I notice you still don't have disc brakes. With a downhiill bike you have 150mm hub spacing on the rear wheel.That leaves enough space to have your big grey wheel going around the disc. Might be a tight fit, but it would give you disc brakes.

    Hi Tom, I was curious as to why you chose to use an ‘outrunner’ style motor rather than one with an internal rotor?
