"New starter motor" shows us the Alternator.....Calvin 🤣🤣👍👍
😂😂😂😂
I love the MGB. I had one in red about 30 years ago. I think every new driver should have a drive in something like this. It really makes you respect the car and work for any reward you might get from driving it. The seatbelt is the only safety feature and no driver aids......proper old school driving. Nice to have in the garage for a weekend blast, you can ring its neck and have maximum fun without breaking any laws!
"The seatbelt is the only safety feature.." Do you have any concept of how safety features reached the stage they are at today. What do you call disc brakes and rack and pinion steering? From the B's early days they were crash tested with the best equipment available at the time. You do realise that B/L had one of the biggest crash testing programs in the world in the late 60's/ early 70's.. We only got to where we are because of the work back then. M.G. engineers developed air bags in the early 70's, rejected by B/L bosses.
@@patrickroohan7633
To be fair I do recall all the work BL did from crash safety standards and arguably made other manufacturers up their game.
@@skylined5534 Rover did it first with the P6 in 1963. I have one in the garage. No one here knows what it is.
Actually a six speed gearbox. It has overdrive on 3rd and 4th. Switch on the right marked "Overdrive" controls it
I’m in the US and really would love to get a MGB GT. I think they’re also appreciating over time.
Ha ha calvin you crack me up!! " Did you see that chavvy guy from Luton doing draggy times" 🤣🤣🤣 can't stop laughing brilliant
Pulling the choke out allows more fuel into the engine via the carburettor/s when starting from cold. You push it back in once the engine has started/warmed up. Modern cars do this for you via electronic fuel injection.
It doesn't increase the fuel flow. It restricts the air flow. The net result is the same though, a richer fuel/air mixture. Actually I'm going to edit this to say you are correct for the SU Carbs. The choke moves the needle jet to increase fuel flow.
Chops garage loves these cars. I like them too, they are cheap enough even thou gun they look so classic and worth more.
Funny vid mate. I'm old school at twice your age so grew up with choke and points. No FI then. I love old and new but they are just different. Try a Spitfire of the same era and go round a corner! the inside wheel tucks under then you crash! I was a BMW bike tech and so had two different hats, one for reading codes and then using a hose to listen to the inlet to balance them.
It is definitely a cool car this would be so fun to drive 🔥
What a shed. That said I would have the gt-v8 with the 3.5 Buick v8 from the Range Rover. Or the mg-c with the Healey straight six.
I'm sure it would be better for the environment if this car was double the size, covered with plastic, and festooned with sensors and computer chips, obviously.
I drive an MGB, great car. Perfectly capable as an everyday drive. The only thing it struggles with on modern roads is the potholes. These were designed before the country fell apart.
“...before the country fell apart...” well said!
doesn't need an mot, after 40 years. classed as classic exempt. any vehicle over 40 years can have black number plates.
It says Ossely .That's a modified engine .
Yes
If the carbs and timing are spot on you'll get 0-60 in 13 secs and a top speed of just under 100mph. That car had overdrive which you didn't mention. A well sorted MGB will easily keep up with modern traffic on our congested roads and of course no road tax or ULEZ to pay!
He struggled to figure out the heating..I'm sure he doesn't know what an overdrive is.
My MGA manages that!
I suppose that's why its good being a car trader, you never know what's going to come through the door! awesome content as usual.
Quaterlights Calvin.
Quaterlights...
The youth of today, they know nuffin!
Call me an old Grandad, but I love this MG GT👍
Great video Calvin, reminding me of all the old car terms we don't use now like 'quarter light' (small opening windows) and 'overriders' (upright chrome bumper bits) 👍😄
We could learn so much from this car, todays cars require a degree a quantum physics to fathom out the heating, ventilation, sat nav, speed control, cruise control, radio etc, etc. I loved my BGT, had it for 5 years , my everyday car, drive it all over France, an used it for my work as a community nurse. Never missed a beat, the most reliable car I’ve ever owned, and it was 22 when I bought it.
Top video Calv, had me in stitches, when the roof dumped on you 🤣 More of these classics mate 👏
you just can't beat the old schools cars that's how we got to where we are today
I doesn't matter who they are or how exotic the cars they are used to, so many just love the driving experience of pure analogue cars of cars like this.
The choke actually 'chokes' (or restricts) the airflow through the carburettor. This makes the the air/fuel mixture richer while the engine warms up.
Choke
On some carburettors, yes you’re right. But not on the SU carbs fitted to an MGB the ‘choke’ raises the idle speed of the engine and half way through its travel it also begins to move the main jet, richening the mixture
Not on SUs. It pulls the jet down to richen the fuel mixture. No restriction like on a Weber etc.
@@cars-by-Q Only the the throttle stop screw adjustment raises the idle speed
@@SpacedOdyssey incorrect, the choke on an SU carb operates a cam which initially makes contact with the throttle linkage to raise idle speed and then begins to lower the jet hight (increasing mixture) about half way through its travel. Trust me I own and have built and set up these carbs many many times.
Love old classic cars just hope we will always be able to buy petrol for them because my old 4.2 jag loves a drop of petrol 😂
Finally an MG now your talking my language 🤣 I'm a ex MG / Rover mechanic. Fantastic video Calvin 👏👏
I bet you made loads of money changing head gaskets
@@MrThegenral1 🤣🤣🤣 on the k series and T series 👌. But I love my old rovers and MG's and they are going up in price!!
When you're in 4th gear, try flicking that big switch on the far right of the dash - it activates an overdrive unit which drops your revs down for cruising, basically giving you a 5th gear ratio :) No idea why they didn't just give it a proper 5 speed box but there you go!
I think, although I could be wrong, it works in 3rd as well.....
@@howardlake6178 That's right it should work in 3rd and 4th, however if the inhibitor switch fails, it can also technically be activated in any gear, even reverse - with devastating consequences!
There were no 5-speed RWD 'boxes made anywhere in the UK auto industry at the time. Unless I'm mistaken the first one was the the Rover LT77. My BGT here in the states is running a Nissan 5-speed. In this country, much easier to find (not to mention much lighter) than the rover 'box.
Secondary windows ? That would be quarter lights 🙏
Calvin you legend. I thought the g whiz video could not be topped but you did it. Calvin’s car comedy! Brilliant video mate
I think the B in MGB stands for basic.
Also I believe back in the day the extra window was called a quarter light?
Had a couple of these. Rule of thumb is if you can see any rust on the outside there's about 3 x worse rust that's hidden. These were made in 3 sections then welded together. They rust everywhere but the worst areas are were they were joined together and in the sill area's.
Great video Calvin any chance a video on a Skoda Octavia VRS 2013-2019 please
Calv Calv Calv 🤦🏻That 'stick' was a perfect bit of engineering that holds the bonnet sound insulation in place 😄
Cav, I’ve had a really bad day, man, I’m watching this post I’m peeing my pants laughing, thank you sir, I’m an old fart at 58, well done you 👍😂
I own two MG's. I would guess that the car is really bouncy because the shocks are empty of oil. Your riding on the springs. You have to manually add oil to each shock. Once you get the shocks squared away and go with a bigger anti-sway in the front they handle really good in the turns. Not sure why the steering is so hard. Usually these cars have pretty light steering even though they are manual.
I think the larger tyres make the steering heavier.
Alternator pictured when talking about the starter motor and choke giving more air to the carbs hahaha you joker!
What a beauty 🤗❤️ I do love the MGB GT such a classic
Calvin u need more classics on your channel
love the old choke days didn't catch it right and you flooded the engine .restore it Calvin British engineering at its best would say future classic love the content
that's why you need a clotshpeg to hold it in place lmao.
What a diverse piece of stock Calvin.
The cars the Same age as me 😂😂😂
Your comment about basic engineer is brilliant. Where as more modern cars you can’t work on yourself nowadays , these cars you can, and it’s where a lot of us would have picked up our “spanner” skills. Great video, keep them coming.
Blimey I wouldn't by a bicycle from this guy let alone a car !!
Sell it on to Drew Pritchard / Paul Cowland
Yes agree with you
Edit: I was interested in buying this 😂🤣😂
😲
I have owned two of these MGB GTs both used as a daily runners and were surprisingly reliable if looked after. So much fun and anytime parked up the amount of people of all ages who would come up to me and ask/chat about it.
You can now buy custom electric converted ones.
The one you want to take a look at was the very rare MG GT Sebring race version which has wide arches and raced in the famous Sebring 12hr race.
Great video 😉
bloody funny mint video !!! the dripping sunroof reminds me of my old capri 2.0 litre sport !!! 😆😁🤣😂
Great car. Wish they’d bring back this quarter light windows. So brilliant for a bit of fresh air. Great project car for someone too. Love it. Thank u 🙏
LMAO at the " secondary windows " .. they're quarter lights.
That's proper clean for its age. Is it original paint and motor??
Actually the choke increases the fuel to air ratio not the air to fuel. It enriches the mixture with more raw fuel for starting from cold
Jeez, you call the quarter lights “secondary windows”, the alternator as the starter motor, you think the choke lets more air in instead of fuel and you can’t even operate the heater and fan. Your knowledge of cars is less than BASIC! The MGB you’ve bought is full of terminal rust and the car could do with a restoration. I wouldn’t buy a car off you EVER! Unless something is less than 5 years old you millennials don’t have a clue!! 😅
What a video cracked me up with the things you was saying and getting in the car was funny as f*ck 👌🤣 I think you are made for that one pal 😂
Where was the HPI speck check ?? 👀😄
That wooden stick was holding the soundproofing up under the bonnet fella! 👍🏻
1st
Typical car dealer saying it’s got a new starter motor when it’s the alternator not a clue 😂
thats a alternator not a starter motor
The mg b was called the mg b because it had a b series engine. The mg a had an a series engine
Weirdly the mga also has a B series. The A series is the engine in the mg midget, mini, and Morris minor (and a bunch of stuff)
The MGA only had the B series engine.
Are you thinking of the MG Midget?
I heard that what I had said in other videos. Must be wrong then. Apologies
No need to apologize! I find all these nerdy details interesting so Ive just assumed you will to!
@@thomaswalker1258 again, no need to apologise. I had to Google my information.
where do you start?? starter motor .. no, choke , no idea how it works...its a quarter light... and finally is a £1500 car in that condition, if it shows a little rust, its like an iceberg, lots more under the surface. webasto is shot, chrome sills best way to hide the galloping rust. Inside the door shuts full of rot. On the plus side drive it with no MOT or tax. Best move it on quick, but enjoyable video
Common problem leaking fuel tank. If you smell petrol get your guys to check it. Readily available. Easy job. It's not about the speed it's the feal and the smile it puts on people's faces.
I think the car had a four speed manual box with a twin overdrive or single .the button was on the gear knob or a flick switch on the dash to the right of the huge steering wheel
Take it to VRS they'll probably find another 400 horses out of it
Your BASIC car knowledge is shocking......choke allowing more air in 'WRONG'. Your camera is on the alternator (which hasn't visually changed much in years) and your busy talking about a new starter motor fitted. Come on mate....this is BASIC stuff for you to know. Great fun video though...
My MGB is a 1969 roadster, just fitted led lights, other than that all standard except for a 321 disi. Best with standard tyres, lots of addons over the years. Years ago nobody ever bothered putting seatbelts on, the 1/4 lights were for flicking the ash of you ciggie, you should have been smoking a cigar or even better a pipe, bet the seats have sagged just need a new rubber diaphram. See the B has an osseli engine should go well. Dont forget the grease gun. Oh and I think rubber bumper MGBs look the bis with minilites.
First of all the steering wheel is on the wrong side....When are the English going to come into the 21st century........Secondly the last MGB (GT) was built in 1980........That has been 42 years ago so most all "B" are going to be basket cases by now.......So don't come on YT and complain about what a lump of coal you bought........
Omg love these little MGs, Get it planet of dreams 😎
MOT exempt, Road Tax exempt....Classic limited mileage insurance for a middle aged bloke about £120!....Good selling point on that is it has been fitted with a brake servo, most have not. A servo makes it a lot more pleasant to drive in modern traffic And best colour as well
All cars over 40 years old are classed as Historic and by a quirk can legally bear black and white plates. But anything from 1973 on would have had reflective plates from new so it's pretty naff to change them to black and white just for show.
"Keep fit window !" 😂😃😂😃😂😃😂😃😂😃😂😃
You look massive in the MGB GT cal
My mate had one, we used to go the pub in. I got in the passenger seat of course, so no steering wheel to squeeze past. But my mate was 6' 2"" tall, and he never had difficulty getting in and out. How TALL are YOU, then?
had an arkley bodied mg miget about 20 years ago paid 4k now they go for north of 45k , british steel
"I bought an Old MGB GT"; talk about redundancy!! Are there any NEW MBG GT's? No. They are all old
😂😂 I've got a 1984 Alfasud Ti, and if I forget to put the seatbelt on, I have to stop. Coax it out of the reel. Then put it on. Absolutely loved this, but I hate nothing more than MGs and there are so many of them. Scrap it and sell the number plate 😂
How is the new-style plate much more logical ?
Granted, plate 01-09 are fairly straightforward to understand the years but unless you know the rules, you wouldn't know what year a 26 plate is, would you ?
I own this car atm and its bloody amazing
I love watching you young boys in classic vehicles!! 😂 Loved that video Cal. 😎
That car was such a disappointment, It was just crude. It's looks concealed outdated engineering. 😐
Just bought one, broke down the other day ,fuel gauge is dicky, carbs are dicky, brakes are dicky all the locks are dicky but I'm getting to love it👍🇬🇧,
When I was in the US Navy in Scotland in 1975 I had a Spitfire 1500 and friends had a TR-6, MGB, TR-7 and TVRs.
Got two, a rubber bumper and chrome.. both used as a daily. 😅
We love them, maybe a bit too much.
I have a American 1977 1500 owned four corvette’s mg midget so much fun a71 stop complaneing buy a water pump
I have a 74 Roadster their Simplicity is their beauty. Have to say that rust looks a little scary. You should change the needle and seat in the carbs that's why you're smelling petrol it's flooding
Does your over drive work? the switch is on the right of the steering wheel, basically gives you an extra half a gear in 3rd and 4th! Recently got my own MGB 1971, they are great fun!
Perhaps he is a little *ahem* young to even know about such things...😁
You’re obviously too big for a sports car! All cars were basic back then but they were dependable and didn’t need an ecu and all that electronic crap to run. MGBs put a smile on your face when you drive.
Hard to believe someone so ignorant about cars makes a living buying and selling them, would you buy a second hand car from this man?no WAY!!
The rust on that sill says this car is in much worse shape than it looks. As an MG guy ('71 GT) I would be very afraid of this car.
Hi Calvin, great video. How tall are you? I'm 6 foot 4ish with a 34 inch leg - wondering if I'd have enough room?
Its a very pretty car and very upgradeable. Lots of people put in a Mazda Mx5 engine and gearbox in and uprate the suspension and brakes…
Once MGB´s were more than about 2 years old, you´d be lucky if you
had 2 weeks driving without it being off the road!
Had one for many years, great little cars, lack some creature comforts, but there are some upgrades to be had.. and can add some accessories.
I have no problem getting in the car and I'm about 30 years older.. 🙄
For such a basic car you seem to be struggling. People were actually expected to take driving seriously. Not just as an aside to drinking there coffee or texting
I have never seen a GT with a fold back sun roof. Is this custom installed or something that was just for England/Europe?
i drove one around the block in the 80's hated the bloody thing, horrible driving position , painful heavy steering. said then sports cars are not for me...and i have never owned a sports car in the near 70 cars i have owned... gimme the old landcrab any day
The small windows on the leading edges of the doors were quite common and known as 'quarter lights,' or 'quarter vents.'
Back in those days, People used their brains to pull out the seat belt, or alter the fan speed, The choke is make the fuel/air mixture richer for cold starting.
These days there are So many Thickos that need to car to think for them !
I always wanted to own a MGB-GT.
Not a single car on his lot basic or non basic will be ruining in 50 years time and not one would you still get every part emagine trying to get a part for a Tesla in 50 years time if Musk starts integrating battery's he says to save weight they won't last 20 years at least the MG is future proof it can be adapted for future use because its basic
When you know something about cars you can talk till then shut up. Right hand side of dash is a switch it’s overdrive but that must be over your head also.
You sounded as if in pain Calvin. "keep fit window" LOL the choke btw is to add more fuel to increase engine running when cold. Later in the 80's they developed an auto choke, but I always preferred manual choke. Still have one on my TR7. Then '83'ish injection (XR3i's for eg.) Great vid. you should do more of these.
I remember you could get conversion kits for the electronic chokes in Austin Rover stuff but to be honest I preferred the auto system!
The biggest issue was usually a duff thermostat. If the thermistor was giving a low reading to the ecu dueto the coolant not being warm enough even 'at temp' the little stepper motor would never fully shut off the fuel enrichment valve. The answer was to fit a very good quality thermostat and without the little bypass 'jiggle pin'! Worked like a charm!
@@skylined5534 Pre ecu days of engines with manual choke...all the way :)
Used to stay in Abingdon in summer in school holidays saw them loading the newly produced ones being loaded onto trains probably for export to US.
Interesting visuals! Would it be possible to get an English translation of the audio? Or perhaps English subtitles?
Love these videos. My Father in Law brought the last ever produced V8 mg.
