    For those remnant jets you mentioned at the end, Dr. Becky says this might be evidence that Sag A* used to be oriented with the galactic plane but somehow shifted its orientation. Another explanation is that the jets actually fired in all directions, and the only reason they look like they are perpendicular to the galactic plane is because we are seeing the parts of the jets which has very few collisions with the galactic plane; sort of a survivor bias thing

      It is hard to believe most of what is reported. As it is an act of faith in itself. Noone has touched the depths of space. We know from here on earth that radiant energy from our tiny little sun can do pretty crazy shit. Which we can actually see with a lense. These galaxies are unfathomable distances. Meaning any data sent either way is subject to complete manipulation. I get the multiple photos over period or time and figuring a average. I guess this goes back to the energized particles moving through a space over a period of time is 100٪ relative to you and your location. That being said said our observation/understanding of said time and space could be 500% wrong. Hell the earth could be flat jk. But we disproved Ether (with a big E) just to admit it's existence in more current terms/understanding. Personally I hope we're super close to some covid zombies bcuz I feel yall fucked up and that was the long black train. We don't understand dick yet we're gonna play with genetic makeup covid rabies about every other virus is being experimented with.human error is significant when it comes to something as complex as creation. Lovecraft's main theme in his writing was, of course, fear of the unknown. And nothing in astronomy/cosmology captures that more fully than a black hole. Azathoth would be a very fitting name not only for it's position in the galaxy but the fact that, as with Azathoth, it currently dormant or sleeping. And to wake either would cause untold destruction.

Imagine trying to speak the name of something who's language requires 8 mouths and 5 dimensional movement to be spoken.

    1) The thought of a black hole precessing freaks me out. A) Can a ring singularity even Do that? (I know, you may not know. *I* certainly don't. Maybe nobody knows. Kerr metric gives me nightmares without making it any more complicated.) B) Given that Earth's precession is largely due to a torque being applied on our tidal bulge... does that even make sense for a black hole? We may need a few dozen new episodes of PBS SpaceTime to explain THIS one to people like me. :)
    2) I'm pushing for SgrA* getting a "fun" name of either "Sauron", "The Ring of Doom" (although that name mostly shows up in the old animated version of LoTR), or "Ash Nazg". (It does look like a Ring after all. :) )
    But, Azathoth would be cool too. I don't recall any mention of Sagittarius in Lovecraft, but he does refer to Azathoth as being 'at the center of the cosmos', and somewhat 'outside of normal space and time'... so maybe "Azathoth" should only refer to the region inside the event horizon? And the entire black hole could be Azathoth+ (just to keep up the tradition of names with punctuation in them. ;-) )

    Simply in who you are, you explain things so well. I’ve never found such a refreshing and enjoyable scientific vlog. There is no arrogance, even though are so knowledgeable. I sense a desire to simply share that knowledge with those of us who have no time to read so broadly… and perhaps do not have the background to understand the papers you review.

      “by definition..black hole”: Anton is a shit-headed liar. Only in nonrelativistic (nonLorentzian) maths does one get escape velocity of celerity. Google 2016 singularity formalism (Quora) for my full disproofs of black holes. No proof of infinite redshift, no proof of event horizons. Dark/Planck matter isn’t a singularity or BH either. Saying that GR predicts the observation is like saying that transfinite sets predict how a nation’s budget behaves on a kid’s calculator. He’s only a HS teacher so can’t discuss any of the quantitative predictions and how those conflict with natural laws. And it looks like all of his fans can’t either-like televangelism.

    Thanks Anton. I was waiting for your take. I was wondering why they say we are facing basically the top of the black hole instead of the side. I await your detailed take on this. After all, we are in a spiral galaxy, so it is hard to believe that the black hole is facing us and spinning perpendicular to the arms.

    • @jackstrawful
      @jackstrawful 2 года назад

      I think people are just misinterpreting what was said at the conference - she didn't explicitly say we're looking at the top, what she said was "face-on". I think what she meant by this was 'edge-on'. I don't think she was a native english speaker and something just got mixed up by the language barrier. Unless there was another part of the conference talking about this more explicitly that I missed.

    • @Cole-jb5ip

      If that is true, the orientation wouldn't be good for us if it decided to start feasting. However, there is some evidence that that is not the case. There are radio emissions ( lobes ) that are above and below the plane of our galaxy that suggest otherwise. 😎

    I've thought Azathoth would be a good name for Sagittarius A* for years. As for it's orientation, I wonder if the warping of light around the black hole might mean that any image we receive using this method will show a glowing doughnut shape, regardless of the actual orbital plane.

    Yes, it's a great effort, although the margin of error must also be extreme, so whilst it's spectacular it may also look somewhat different in real life i.e. if it image didn't need all the calculations used to produce it.

    The spots were one of the main questions I had when looking at this image for the first time so thanks for at least a partial answer - I am sure there will be further work on this. Also, the shape is not circular but elliptical which makes me think that it is not oriented directly at us.

      They don't. They think that the OBSERVABLE universe started at a single point, but that expansion took place simultaneously everywhere. The observable universe does have a center: us, because we are the ones doing the observing. But we honestly have no idea how much universe there is outside of our observable universe.

    For updates on this topic, this isn't actually the accretion disk that we are seeing, it is the photon sphere, that is why this image is so similar to the M87* black hole: if it was the accretion disk then the incident angle would make these pictures really different, which isn't the case.

    One thing nobody is taking into account- (or maybe just not mentioning) is that as the Earth moves along its' orbit- the string of observations is elongated, "swipped" as the telescopes are taking the images, so the size of the telescope is somewhat larger than what we have on the face of the planet.
