  • Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the sport of skiing: because hurtling down an icy mountain on two planks of wood is totally a rational way to spend a weekend.

    True story (unsure if I mentioned this before): back in January when I revisited Winter Park, I got up at 4:15 AM, got on the college ski bus that left at 5:30, got stuck in traffic along the way, and we didn’t get to the resort until 10. Essentially it was a 4.5 hour bus ride, followed by hopping from lift line to lift line the whole day before heading back to campus around 3:30 (the return trip didn’t take as long).

    Brilliant. And a good reason to get good enough to go backcountry. Don't forget the avi safety classes and extra gear, not to mention your own food and water. But you get solitude, and I'm not talking about the resort.

    I am an old guy and they were the good old days of skiing. It used to be a fun activity that poor college students could do. I went to Colorado University in 1969. Week day lift tickets at A-basin, Breck, and Loveland $3.50 for CU students. It was an adventure, and lifts were more primitive, but it was cheap and fun to do. No crowds either. No Eisenhower tunnel, so you had to go over Loveland Pass to get to Breck, Vail, and Copper. The last 20 years of ski-flation has suck the fun out of it.

    I totally lost interest in skiing because I felt it was a senseless and cumbersome activity that I did need to put myself through. By the way, SRG, back in the day I thought skiing was pretty much a ripoff because of the reasons you mentioned in your video. Last summer coming home from a trip I made the mistake of coming through the mountains between Leadville and Denver and got stuck in Sunday traffic from Silverthorne to Lakewood for about 4 hours. It used to only take about an hour todo the same thing. That was just weekend traffic on a Sunday in the summer! I’d hate to see the same thing on a Sunday in January or February.

    • @robbank8027
      @robbank8027 3 месяца назад

      Summer traffic is way worse. Especially when the front range hits 100 degrees. This how it was 20 years ago at least. Moved out long time ago.

    • @SRGSkiing
      @SRGSkiing  3 месяца назад

      I have found that summer traffic is more consistent, but not necessarily longer. Like, ski traffic will only hit from 6-10 and 3-7 on Saturdays and Sundays. Meanwhile, the backups I've experienced over the summer haven't been quite as intense, but they exist at all hours of every day. The construction this year certainly isn't helping I-70 though.

    • @SRGSkiing

      @hughsmith790 Honestly, if you ever get the chance to go skiing on a weekday, I would totally recommend you try it again. There are still deals to be found if you know where to look, and traffic isn't nearly as bad on weekdays. I always hate to hear about anyone who doesn't love skiing anymore, because it still can be great if you work around a few things. But of course, to each his own.

    I don't understand why people don't just take their helicopter to the ski resort. That is what I do and it is very convenient. Once at the resort, just check in for your full day private lesson. This is the best way to avoid the long lift lines. 😜

    I respectfully have to disagree. I am 62, live in Florida and got back to skiing this past Winter after an over 20 year hiatus. I managed to get in 16 days total between Park City, Deer Valley, Snowmass, and Heavenly. I had a great time. Never waited more than 10 minutes in a lift line. When I was first skiing in CA in my twenties lift lines were much longer. I have watched many of your videos on the RUclips and find them to be very informative but I also think you are way too negative most of the time.

      I see your point. Constructive criticism maybe. I will keep watching and I am amazed at how much knowledge you have about these ski areas at your young age. I’m planning to go to Keystone in early January and I can’t wait to see if Schoolmarm is as great as you say.
