Because it gets pushed out of the water in the middle of that, the deceleration continues to be applied, but whatever timer or tracker it has to determine when to stop decelerating and give control to the AI stops getting checked, so it just accelerates to infinity and beyond in the opposite direction Part of the reason that it only half-disables the water controls might have to do with the water being so close to the blocks it's on, but that would need further testing and maybe decompiling the game

So... I think the Goomba is ejected by the pipe sideways and then goes straight up, but the slope doesn't let the Goomba straight up, so it tries to go back to the pipe? This means EVERYTHING could work the same, like a Muncher? The possibilities are endless.
