  • History facts:
The Canaanites were a collection of city-states that inhabited the region of Israel, Jordan and Southern Syria for several centuries before the arrival of the Israelites. Unlike other civilizations, the Canaanites were not an Empire. No one from the land of Canaan described themselves as a “Canaanite,” but rather defined themself by their city-states such as Gezer or Migiddo. The city-states were not natural allies and frequently warred against each other. They frequently practiced looting warfare.
Yet people from the Canaanites region migrated towards Egypt. Eventually, these people became the Hyksos and eventually conquered the country and ruled Egypt for 150 years. After this, the land of Canaan became a territory of Egypt.
    Culture:
Canaanite culture was very advanced. The Canaanites were incredibly gifted artists producing some of the finest pottery, weapons, and stone reliefs of the age. Hebrews would later pick up the Canaanites' pottery tradition. They were also gifted writers and produced the language that would eventually evolve into Hebrew.
Canaanites and Hebrew settlements look similar. The major difference is Pig Bones!
    Religion:
Canaanite religion believed in a pantheon of gods who had a clear hierarchy of authority. The Canaanites were polytheistic but also monolatristic. There were Canaanites who followed a four-tiered Hierarchy of divinity. at the top of the hierarchy were the mother and father power couple, El and Asherah. Beneath the power couple were their children. Their most famous children are Ba’al, Mot, and Molech.
In the Canaanite religion might makes right. Their theology was heavily militaristic. Ba’al was usually positioned brandishing a weapon. The gods received legitimacy when an army worshiping one god defeated an army worshiping another god. Canaanite mythology usually consisted of a god of disorder, usually representing an enemy’s city, being defeated by a more powerful god who brought order to a chaotic state. This mythology supported the Canaanite practice of conquering enemy territory. The underlying theme was that it was a moral positive for this one city to conquer another because the colonizing city brought order to a chaotic mess.
    Bible Connection:
Holy Places: According to the Canaanites, certain places were holy whereas other places were profane. Certain cities were the territory of one God whereas other cities were the territory of another god. This can be particularly seen in the conflict with the king of Aram in 1 King 20.
1 King 20:28 The man of God came up and told the king of Israel, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because the Arameans think the Lord is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know that I am the Lord.’”
Asherah’s name actually means “place.” The reference to “Asherah poles” is not a direct translation but a best estimation of what the phrase means. There is no reference to “poles” in the original Hebrew. Judean Pillar figurines. In all likelihood, the term just means a place where Asherah was worshiped. This is distinct from Biblical theology where all areas are the domain of God.
Social Hierarchy: Canaanite gods were part of a strict Divine hierarchy that translated into Canaanite society. every group in Canaanite Society was supported by a certain god. The more important you were in society, the stronger God from whom you could claim support. This is distinct from biblical theology, where all people are blessed and protected by God regardless of social status.
Might makes Right: The reality and measure of a Canaanite god was in their ability to win wars and maintain order. The Canaanite “might makes right” is distinct from the ethical monotheism of the Bible. God's protected the Israeli people as long as they were faithful to his Covenant. Holiness was the dominant measure of the god of Israel. God's blessing was dependent upon the Israelites manifesting his holiness.
Molech: Probably the most infamous Canaanite god in the scripture is Molech. Famed images of babies being sacrificed to Molech have been a primary justification for the destruction of the Canaanites by Israel. There have been numerous examples of Infant Jar Burials in Ancient Canaan. Diodorus Siculus even wrote of as many as two hundreds being murdered in one day. Many historians believed that worshippers of Molech also marked themselves with tattoos, and this may have inspired the biblical prohibition.
Ba’al was famously the god of thunder and in Canaanite mythology he rides through the sky in the clouds. Yet we see the same image and term used to describe the God of the Bible (Deut 33:26, Psa 68:32-33, 104:1-3, Isa 19:1). It is possible after the conflict between Elijah and the prophets of Ba’al, the followers of God attributed this term to the God of Israel. It was not uncommon for a victorious party to adopt the sobriquet of a defeated party.

Trying reading an updated history book. The Israelites were Canaanites. They lived in the hills of Canaan and traded with the city state Canaanites.
After the bronze age collapse they migrated to the lowlands. No conquest involved.

      Thank you for watching.
Yes, most modern archeologists would say Canaanites moved toward being Israelites. But there is some evidence that there were violent clashes in Canaan. The point of this video is how Canaanites are presented in the Bible. So the focus was a biblical perspective which suggests a conquering.

From my study of ancient religions, the sky serpent god Can or Kan in certain other parts of the world seems to be pervasive. I wonder if the name Canaanites is related to that serpent god Can. And maybe that was the reason God wanted them wiped out.

That is fascinating! Where can I learn about Kan?

@@Theolife well, you will have to do some research. Ancient Egyptian is a good place to start. Sirius the Dog Star is a good place. Canine. Also related to cannabis which was said to have been given by the gods. Vatican means “speaks for the sky serpent god”.
Google “Vatican hall serpent face” and tell me that’s not intentional. And a little off subject the Vatican owns the worlds largest telescope called “LUCIFER”.
South American kukulkan. The Serpent god. Quetzalcoatl the feathered serpent.
I could go on but it would be a very long reply.
It seems to me all the ancient gods were Satan with maybe a few lesser gods being demons. Satans sin was pride, right? He wanted to be worshiped like God. Earth is his domain.
Genesis says, the Nephelim were on The earth in those days and after when the sons of God saw the daughters of men were beautiful they took them as their wives and bore children. These were the mighty men of old, men of renown”.Then later in Genesis it is naming Noah’s kids and their kids. It names Kush. It says Kush fathered Nimrod and “Nimrod was the first on earth to be a mighty man.”.
So, those “gods” showed after the flood and to me appear to be the fallen angels.
