Milky Way Tracked Panorama - How I Shot this Image

- In this video I return to a favourite spot of mine to shoot a milky way tracked panorama and I'll show you the location and run you through my mindset when out in the field.
I think it's good to re-visit familiar locations and see what else we can find to shoot out there under the stars.

It is always great your videos Richard, simple words and explanations, amazing photos results, no problems with two differents places a few meters apart for shot foreground and sky, I also use this method with the tracker is more correct for better results expecially behind the branches and leaves. Excellent narrative of the outing, a bit different from other videos but I liked it. You did not mention or I may have missed it if you did, the next to the last photo you shared at the end around 12:57 to the lower right of a tree it appears to be a meteor and a satellite that form a cross, interesting capture with a bit of luck.

I totoally understand you have to move the tripod when shooting tracked sky and so do I.
As long as it is pretty much in the same location with the foreground so it should not bother anyone who understand why we have to do that.
The only issue will be when we send this photo to some the Astro photo competition and it can be unqualified.....
Hope you can show how you do track pano in the future tutotial.

I have an idea. It would be nice to se a video regarding milkyway photos in bortle 4. Many of us don't have the luxury of bortle 1-2😁 I would love to se hove you edit and the outcome. My self liv in bortle 4 and have bortle 3 in 1h drive.

Pleasure to watch and listen to your astro adventures. And absolutely stunning pictures, I can't imagine how great it would be to get such results with only a single tracked sky shot! In my opinion there is nothing wrong with shooting your sky a couple of meters away in the same direction on the same night. Especially if you're making sure it matches the composition as it was then and there. I use the same technique all the time. Also great storytelling to just go back to the spot another day and show what it was all about (although video on the shooting night is even better ofcourse). I have so much nights where I was out shooting and just couldn't or didn't feel like vlogging. Might steal that idea every now and again ;-).

Great video Richard! I got one of those skytrackers the other week, still to test it, can't wait. I tried using your codes and links, but some I couldn't as it went to US and not Aus - but for as many items as I could that I was getting I tried to use the link. Got a lens warmer, new remote timer, tripod.... I saw on FB that you are not going to WA this year? I am planning a wee road trip from Melbourne across for the eclipse, I think it is gonna be crazy busy in Exmouth, I will have my swag but I'm thinking will maybe free camp near Coral Bay.
I'll say this though, and it might sound a bit crazy, and I've traveled all the way around Australia and up and down the middle (except Tas) but some of the best skys are in NSW - They Hay Plains and some of those regions, up in the no mans land near Hillston - mind boggling how big the sky feels. It starts at the bottom, as I like to say.
Anyways, superb video again and great pictures.

Yes I think there are plenty of really dark skies up in that region of NSW. For me, it's all about chasing foregrounds . ..and they can be found all over the place.

Incredible Images, Richard! The hydrogen alpha filter on your camera, was that a screw on filter or did you have to get the internal sensor filter modified? Absolutely love your videos - I look forward to seeing the notification a new one has been uploaded!!
Thanks so much for watching Gary. I had the internal filter changed to one that enables H-alpha and visible light through. I don't use any clip on filters at all.

Yes that would be fine, lots of people use them.
All of your nightscape images are simply amazing! I know you said your tracked sky was a single shot and they are stunning. I do have a question about multiple exposure tracked panorama. Would you have to level your camera after each extended exposure as the tracker is going to move considerably if you are taking multiple minute exposures? I would think eventually your camera is going to be way off the mark if not leveled. Does that make sense? Love your work Richard! Alway look forward to your very informative videos! Thanks for your very kind words of support Carl. Yes I do try to level the camera for each of the shots .. and that's why I use the V mount under the ball head on the tracker. You are correct in assuming the panorama will be skewed if the tracker is allowed to continue it's roatation.

Thanks a lot Carmel. Those are criss crossing satellites .. there are thousands of them up there now . .(Thanks Mr Musk). I don't get any images there days without satellite trails.
I reckon the water would be 15 feet over the top of the old railway bridge at present.
I always enjoy watching your videos, and love the way you go about composing and compiling the images. You may have already answered this and I just missed it, but what is your reason for shooting at 2.8 with the 20mm 1.8? Why not 1.8?
Thanks for watching. As a general rule any lens will perform better stopped down a bit. Wide open at f1.8 this lens as well as most others does have a bit more vignette, so especially when stitching panoramas I like a cleaner image across the frame.

1 tracked sky image is totally fine for me if we are the dark location. The 1 image is quite clean already as we use very low iso.
Multiple tracked sky and stacking them does not make a lot of difference in term of Milky Way image imo.

I am relatively new to your channel. I love the workshop episodes. I would love to get your insight on getting an image off the screen and onto my wall. Are home printers an option? There are a bazooka of sites that that will do that. Which ones do you respect? Do they take raw photos, tiff or jpeg? What is preferred. What instructions do you give a lab. I hope this makes sense. If you have addressed this already. Please point me to the appropriate episodes. Thanks and clear skies. Bill
Thanks so much for watching Bill. I have no experience with home printers but I'd assume a lab will give better results in the majority of cases. I usually deliver Jpeg large files to the lab but you can send tiff files as well.
As my images are shot at night in low light I usually brighten them up a bit before sending off for printing . .many prints come back dark otherwise. I don't give them any instructions but I have tested a number of printers and worked out the one's that give good results with my kind of work.
Having said all of this, I don't consider myself an expert regarding printing and I don't really have any videos on the subject.

Well possibly not but they are solid and I was also rock scrambling in that location. Snakes don't generally bother me.
Hi Richard, was it a full moon night? If there was a moon then how you have managed such a clear Milky Way?
No there was no moonlight at all. I don't shoot the milky way with a full moon in the sky.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a new torch for light painting? I had a ledlenser P7 but the battery has since died. Apparently it is a very cheap torch because you can't take it apart without breaking it.
There are lots of torches on the market but what I look for would be something that has a high and low setting without any strobe function. (That drives me silly). Also the ability to zoom in tight or have a wide beam. The other thing is not to have hot spots in the beam. A nice soft edge is preferable.

Yes, snakes don't worry us very much.
why not use the 1.8 aperture?
Sometimes I'll shoot wide open at f1.8 but often I like to stop down a bit to get a cleaner image . .especially in the corners.

I bet not having your video equipment with you was a little annoying at 1sts, but then a bit liberating, because then you could just enjoy the photography under the stars with no extra pressure

I watch your channel every time but not everyone is going to purchase a tracker . It is getting a tad stale. Leave the tracker in the car and go back to basics for a change Richard
