Doom3 has its divided audience but Q4 is just underrated imo.
Quake 4 is way better than Doom 3.

thats where the divisive part comes in cus I somewhat disagree.
People remember and praise Doom3 way more, probably cus it sticks to its guns/creative vision and tone. And as a result left more of a lasting impact, stood out. That and you can really feel the passion from the team for their technical achievement, it was a watershed moment amongst several at the time, such as Half Life 2.
Whereas Q4 was a more generic military shooter in the midst of countless military shooters, that was not the first to break the IDTech3 barrier like D3, thus its falling into obscurity.
Still, Q4 a dang fine shooter, and it kept my love for Operation Overlord on Strogos going!
@@Absolynth I preferred Quake 4 compared to Doom 3, back then.
Doom 3 really didn't feel like the classics. Something was missing and we had to wait for Doom 2016 and then Doom Eternal to have that kind of "spark" again.
Doom Eternal, especially.
The game isn't as optimized as you think, even on high end PC.
Both are controverted and in my eyes underrated. Very different from the previous games but a lot of fun :)

the shooters were so much better when gaming wasnt complete mainstream. now raven software only developes call of duty since years.😢 would live to see more badass SP shooters in the future, less good graphics, more good gameplay, AAA games are mostly so boring atm.
Quake 4 might not be the most creatively ambitious game, but IMO it's extremely underrated for 2 reasons. It's visual design & graphics for the time were incredible, it looks great in 4k on a modern display. Also the gun play is incredibly punchy and satisfying. A LOT of shooters lack impact in their basic mechanics, whereas I could replay Quake 4 dozens of times just based off of how good it feels to fire the weapons in this game. Everything looks and sounds awesome and enemies react super well to getting shot as well
Same relates to physics of weapons in F.E.A.R - never seen anything like this in any shooting game.
When it comes to id games, they never fail to deliver high quality and satisfying gun action, no matter how mediocre the game itself is, like RAGE for example.
I know Q4 was developed by Raven but they follow the same school of FPS game design.
@@yme4me Yes, Half life 2, Doom3, FEAR and Far Cry was all incredible shooters at a time that survived about 20 years and still feel nice, don't feel dated.

Quake 4 was epic when i first played it, i was too young to judge games on the things i would now, the game looked cool and i remember it shocking me when you get transformed....and that bit you fight your team leader later in the game...gave me chills. I miss gaming back in the day you just appreciated them more.

That team leader moment was inspired by the first prey (not sure which came out first - even that was a very good game).

I miss Raven. They were always so good and Kotick sent them to the Call of Duty mines.

Gun sounds, atmosphere, big ships and horror elements -> best Strogg Quake game out there. Some lighted scene look best I've ever seen even now in 2024 and no mods. I replay it every now and then :) ... and Strauss voiced over by one famous mafia type actor ;)
i liked quake 4 his gameplay level desing Story and gameplay much more then Doom 3
Yeah D3 was a good game but as far as games you enjoy to boot up and get a romp on, q4 was much better. More ammo, more enemies to shoot, more scenarios, the hate is not deserved.

Shame that we never got Quake5 and know what with the cliffhanger ending.
The stroggification scene is one of the macabre parts ever. Love it.

this is the doom3 of the quake series, yeah cool graphics for its time but the gameplay was severly toned down compared to the rest of the quake games, if they remade this game using the doom eternal formula and added back the metal music it would be sick as F

@@mindrover777 Made easier for players of the time, both Doom 3 and Quake 4 are quite easy and only being somewhat challenging on Hard mode.
I got this game and put it aside for later when I'm not busy. That was like 15 years ago.
With High def mod or not, i'll never get tired palying Q4. Its just a certified badass.

Quake 4 without hardware audio with eax 4.0 support is just...incomplete😢 many people would be surprised how good it sounds, and how complex reverb effects are. Even today. Sound can bounce off wall from specific direction, or if sound source is located in different room, you hear it not directly through wall, but from door opening, or if there is obstruction between you and sound source- it's muffled. Now pair it with cmss headphone with elevation filter. ( You can hear sounds coming not only from rear or front, but even from up and down) and good headphones😊

Recently I saw a chick complain on Steam that you can't play as a chick in this game.
@@kaczan3 To be fair you could in Quake 2 XD going into multiplayer options and picking your model also affected singleplayer's sounds.
Could even play as a strogg yourself with it's own voice sounds.
Old games are great, hence why there has been all this "play your backlog" among gaming circles, many of us have tonnes of older games in our Steam library that deserve to be played and enjoyed.
Badass game, pure action and incredible atmosphere. So many memories ❤
I love that you can clearly read the Strogg language from the beginning once you realize its just a character swap. Was a cool transition process when your brain was implanted. Credits roll watching the characters transition was when I went "Ooooh!" New game: "Yep, me can read it!"

I beat this game on the hardest difficulty and I never had full health or full ammo in my weapon in the entire game. When I passed, I was worried how I would get through that part when all my weapons were taken away and I was left with a pistol.😂

The one problem that I had with that game is slow movement. It is more fun to move fast.
This is amazing… I never played after Quake 1,2. Just tried a bit of Quake 3 but it was basically an arena shooter. I wish they would continue or remake a story based Quake now. Doom is ok but the lack of actual story in it just makes it feel incomplete…

Sieht sehr nach Doom 3 aus. Die haben einfach Elemente und Umgebungstexturen von Doom 3 genommen und es Quake 4 genannt. Sogar einige Karten abschnitte sind 1 zu 1 übernommen worden 😮 Tja Bedesda wusste schon immer wie man mit möglichst wenig Aufwand maximalen Profit erwirtschaftet

Not sure if anyone will see this comment, but I've played this game 15 years ago, once, and it stuck as a core memory forever. Only recently have I tried searching for it again, took me few months.

A few small tweaks, like bloom, raytracing, improved shaders and highres textures and game looks better than many today.
this looks like when you get new glasses after a long time so everything looks better but also slightly off
Other than how slow the start was it was pretty solid. You run just so slow to start with.

Doom3, Quake4, and Prey (the only real one not that crap remake) are the best singleplayer scifi story fps ever made, thanks to ID tech 4 engine
its style is just overpowers almost any other game in this genre. Half life 2 ? garbage environment and garbage weapons, crysis ? dope graphics but was just a little more than a call of duty.
Fear ? very very dope, but not scifi., and i could continue.

@@redmob1989 thats a pretty decent game. it have a littlebit multiplayer feeling with the floating scores what feels off to me but makes up with the amount of ways to kill enemies. Even the off part shines with creativity in the naming like Top-Less or Enviro-Mental. a decent vengeance story iirc, and scifi enough. could have had more weapons, but the ones we got have imaginative alt functions. the sniper bullet control is a cool one, only Bulletstorm, Clive Barkers Jericho and Singularity have that no other game i remember.
That dissolving body concept beer sat well with me. It takes all of the realism out of the game. I’d I don’t see the body, the story is fake. Bad choice on ID’s part. You leave the area so soon anyway. I’d rather have a shower system and see the bodies. I can’t play these games where the enemy seem fake and dissolve.

I was always interested why the Stroggs are just running to and fro without any shooting weapon or just breaking at you like animals.
This was the beginning of the end for Quake imo. From what i remember this game was clearly made for consoles, it was easy even on hardest difficulty, had ammo splattered all over, very little verticality, It was linear, had painful unskippable vehicles levels (Honestly the reason I don't even want to replay it) very few secrets, and they would give you lame rewards like armor and health. It was a downgrade from Quake 2 SP, and MP never took of. Shameful, because the weapons and enemies were pretty cool, movement was fast but the game's scenery never allowed you to run around except for few boss fights.
And to think this game is oldschool when compared to modern FPS shows us how far the genre has fallen.

The engine wasn't really meant to stream this high of resolution of textures. Same thing happens with the Sikkmod, the engine kinda craps out on the framerate despite many newer games running better.

My setup for 4K gaming is: rtx 4080 i5-12400f 16GB Ram, so you will need a little less power, maybe rtx 4060 or amd radeon equivalent
