    This was one of the rallies that Audi should have won with relative ease, even though it was quite tough on the mechanics, suspension and tires, given that they had already been participating in the WRC for 2 years and the reliability problems hadn't yet overcome. Due to withdraws like this Audi surprisingly lost the World Constructors' Championship, along with New Zealand or Sanremo against to a 2WD. In a season in which of 12 rallies only 2 were on asphalt (dry Monte Carlo and Corsica) and another 2 (Safari and Ivory Coast) considered "car-breakers mini-raids" that the unbreakable Toyota Celica Twin Cam used to win.
