  • Is Portland safe? Is Portland getting better? Is that bad? Where are you getting this information?
SooJ and I moved from New York City to Portland back in 2019. We moved here because of the easy access to nature and for the laidback lifestyle. What we found here was so much more than we expected. We found a city full of artists and dog lovers with absolutely no pretension. The locals are grounded and are not trying to get into your wallet. The Portland vibe is one that is brilliant, weird, and endearing. Are there some “bad” things going on here? Honestly no more than anywhere else in North America.
Portland has the good taste in music and sits in the back of the party having the best conversations. PDX is DTF LOL

i visited Portland last year on a boys' trip and really enjoyed it. you are correct that the art and music scene is cool and the city is vibrant and interesting. however i think you intentionally left out some pretty major issues: Portland has the second-highest homeless rate of any city in the US, and about 30% of buildings in downtown are abandoned. after dark, the city feels like a zombie apocalypse.
i would say in terms of safety that it's significantly less safe than the average city in the US. there are plenty of websites out there like city-data and neighborhoodscout that list Portland in the least safe cities in the US.

It really, really depends. Most of the aforementioned neighborhoods are just fine. But yes: as a person who often finds himself working at night in downtown, I gotta say that for the first time in over thirty years of living here, there are blocks that I always avoid.

I dont know where those sites are getting their data, but that is utter hogwash. Oakland, Baton Rouge, Detroit, DC. Just to hit the four corners. And I could list out HUNDREDS more that are far more dangerous than Portland. Ive lived all over, and Portland is one of the safest cities you will find. Media fueled fantasies. And what is worse, is the Internet sites that you listed are just spouting lies. Homelessness is chronic and hideous. downtown has been nearly gutted. Those things are at least true.

@@robforrester3727 Gateway is REALLY bad too. I look out the window at clinic I work at and the parking lot across the street has about 20-40 needle people hunched over walking around like zombies all night! Such an easy fix, but very good money maker for politicians, "outreach programs", and non-profits. Rich areas don't have to deal with it, average citizens do.
Being a person who used Heroin for 10 years, it baffles my mind they let people spend their life in this hell. They don't once think that this person would want to feel accomplished in life. Everyone from that life that turned their life around got arrested and put in rehab, then outpatient for years, along with meds. Instead of buying them tents and clothes every year, which they usually do in spring so by the time fall rolls around they are torn up lol, they could invest in some awesome long-stay rehab facilities, not 90 day, but 180 day, and outpatient clinics.
Everyone else I knew from that life I occasionally see out there or they passed away. Portland wants to be the "cool mom", and let certain people rake in the cash. Callus bleeding hearts...
