I love the clip from diggy diggy hole that plays when discussing dwarves, thank you for this video. If I were to try to balance poison, I would give some of the spells/poisons the ability to deal acid damage or poison damage when cast by a character with elemental adept/made for this purpose by a character with the poisoner feat against creatures with immunity. Gives a nice way to sidestep the immunity without removing it altogether.

Poison damage is dumb anyways tbh. Try describing poison damage compared to all the other damage types, it just doesn't have the same range of descriptions.
It really should just be acid/necrotic damage. Acid for the violent poisons that burn and melt your insides, and necrotic for the silent ones that slowly turn off and kill your organs.
Still doesnt become overpowered to undead or venomous creatures since theyre usually immune/resistant to necrotic/acid damage anyways.

Seems like this could be avoided by rewriting the feet to make it where it ignores one step of resistance. Add in an addendum to Grant disadvantage to anyone saving it to cancel out advantage, and then it would be somewhat workable.

When I go into VATS with the Awareness perk, pretty much everything is immune to radiation, and while that’s great when it’s my companions being immune so they don’t keel over in the glowing sea every five minutes, it’s not so great when you’re trying to use the gamma gun or radium rifle as a viable weapon (this is actually why I don’t use either of those weapons)
On a related note, I found a legendary radium rifle once. The legendary effect? +15% damage to ghouls. Which regain health when there’s radiation. On a weapon that does radiation damage.

I’ve always liked “immune to poison from creatures with a lower CR” as a compromise. That way, you can account for varying potencies of poison for gameplay, and it’s also realistic. Like, a yuan-ti abomination would laugh off a scorpion sting, but a sting from a purple worm would put out a greater volume and potency of poison than could be resisted.

Tbh, I get how ignoring immunity makes little sense in most occasions and can throw off balance (burning a fire elemental, forcing a DM to figure out how Lightning damage on a shambling mound works when it isn’t immune), but Poison is that one damage type that logically makes sense to ignore immunity to. There are a near incalculable number of poisons in the natural world that all have different ways of hurting you, and even the select few animals who have immunity to poison (say Mongooses) only have immunity to certain types of poison.
Bypassing immunity to poison is simply developing a poison that bypasses the common methods of poison immunity, like corroding nerve cells or something.

Then you can argue to the dm that there is no possible way a any amount of dexterity can save him from an explosion in his stomach. Can't really roll out of the way of that one. The hardest part about this is Glyphs of warding break if moved 10 feet from the casting point so you need the food already there and cast it within being noticed

A buff would probably be allowing the feat to poison bosses immune to poison, but with a resistance

A pitch from me to the community, change the poisoner feat to allow you to alter the type of damage your poison is doing, but it requires a certain ingredient. For example holy water or having a paladin nearby or something you can mix it in with your poison to get holy damaging poison. Other alternative ideas, fire necrotic or possibly a constitution check to see if the poison makes the creature vomit a LOT and lose a turn in combat.

This is why I would homebrew anything that lets you overcome resistance to a damage type also downgrade an immunity to a resistance. So anything that would take half damage from poison would take full damage from your poison, and anything that would be immune to poison would take half damage from your poison.

The dm in my longest lasting campaign let me buy poison throughout the campaign, I bought all kinds from the strongest to the weakest poison, didn’t use it at all the whole campaign, I didn’t have a good reason too. Then there was one dwarf who came and stayed with us and my pact wanted me to kill them, so I snuck in while he was a sleep and hit him with every kind of poison at once, and the dm didn’t even bother rolling a saving throw. Granted that was also in 3.5

I like when poison is more of a gimmick than damage source, as paralyze, fear, hallucinations, various debuffs and stuff.

Okay, so a quick fix that might work, (I have yet to test it) is having the poisoner feat reduce poison immunity to resistance, so instead of a creature being immune to poison, they instead take half damage.

I had a poisoner rogue at my table once. I threw him a bone and allowed him to use various acids and chemicals as “poison” against monsters otherwise immune, like undead. Worked like a charm! These monsters still gave him a headache, and made him prepare much more thoroughly for encounters. He became the party’s Batman, all because of a little class flavor.

When I dm next I'm gonna change all monster aside from a select few resistant to poison rather than immune.
My big bad next campaign is a plague doctor who causes the plague rather than stopping it

I can confirm: my character tried using it countless time, and every time the enemy passed the saving throw. Even when succeding it did little damage for a few turn before the enemy succeded a saving throw (also the poisoned arrow didn't hit every time in the first place).
The worst part is that if my character had not a specific ability for that he could pouson himself while applying the poison on the weapon. 🤦

I got my dm to allow me a copper dragonborn, to have a custom magical armor that gives me acid immunity instead of just resistance, that armor also had vial slots so i had like 10 acid vials that i could run up and smash on an enemy all at once by grappling them. It was incredibly game breaking but all of the players were so it was still fun
