That was so cool! Nice touch your cat taking the MGM lions place at the beginning. One of my favourite SciFi programs growing up. Myself being just a year younger than Will.
I only just discovered your channel and I only watched Lost in Space on reruns in the U.K. in the 70’s (I was born in the late 60’s) but I’m so important with what you have done. I would love to do the same with a British Sci-fi series called Blakes 7.
I really loved this!! I have an 8 inch diameter Jupiter 2 model in a diorama in my sci-fi room that is based on the LIS episode Ghost Planet. It looks very similar to your mock up. Cool!!!
Anything not seen in camera can be solid held instead of on cables. This will make your pod and ship more stable when exiting the ship. Another trick is to shoot upside down (with set and ship upside down as well) and let gravity stabilize the hanging ship - so in effect you are actually allowing the ship to drop from it's landing position rather than trying to get it to stay on target when lowered. Then you just reverse the video. Another trick: instead of cables, support the ship from the reverse side of camera on a pole. That way you can actually make it tilt up and down as well. Hang it upside down - most people won't notice the cables from below. Also you can put film grain over the image and give it that nice (original lost in space) film like feel. The model is awesome. Great job on that. The opening shot is magnificent. overall this is awesome - love the j2 Always been my favorite spaceship. Do more, please - enjoyed this.
THE defining sound of my childhood. I was 6 in 1966. Love the first season. EVERYTHING seemed so plausible to me. It was a magical time for TV. Batman, Star Trek, etc..
@@smartluck100 Yes, I turned 6 at the end of october of '66. Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Batman, Captain Scarlet, and The Munsters, specifically, made my heart leap any time I was able to catch any episodes.
it occurs to me that landing might be better handled from the lower deck cockpit, where you can actually see the ground without your ship being in the way. you know, just to double-check the instruments
Bill, I have watched the landing gear onto the derelict many times. The position of the top of the 'hydraulic shafts moves a bit and it really looks like the model sits on the ends of the gear, NOT the footpads. the flat piece on the back of gear leg is about 1/4 inch long. My copy was enhanced by some nice folks at NASA TV because they were also curious. Have another look.
That is amazing! You put a lot of effort into your miniature J-2, and full size mock up.. and the set is fantastic! Thanks for posting - from one long time Lost In Space fan to another! ( I was 8 yrs old when LIS debuted in September 1965.)
I was 4 years old September, 1965, and when I saw the Jupiter-2 lift off from ALPHA CONTROL in Florida, main-drive screaming and the ship surrounded by High Voltage Corona discharge, I was hooked, and it directed my choice of career!
Great work - love the model - nice work (hint: as a film maker that loves special effects: Shoot the jupiter 2 in slow motion (if you can) and pull up instead of landing and put it in reverse - that way the landing will be smooth and less (string) oriented. Another trick to hide wires is to hang it upside down with camera upside down Also - it stabilizes the whole ship and no one notices the wires when underneath - You can also shoot without wires, have the ship anchored at the side away from camera like on a small pole (or simple wooden dowel) (from the background) sort of like a lever - that way you can tilt the vehicle up and down seamlessly if you want in camera by simply turning the pole. if you are going for close up on the space pod coming out of bottom of J2, you can clamp down or secure the area of the J2 that isn't in camera so you won't get wobble. You want that Irwin Allen feel? then shoot at 24 fp and add a touch of that old film grain composite to the footage in editing (you can find it everywhere - easy to download and place into your videos.) Good luck and look forward to seeing more. oh yeah ... and meow!"
Thanks, I couldn't really shoot it in slow motion because the power core lights can't move any faster and neither can the landing legs. I usually use wire removal for other special effects shots, but I didn't for this just to show how it was filmed.
That Jupiter two is terriffic I've built one to obsession not happy with the glossy deck I've made it a vynl effect as on the original I've scratch built the fusion drive system as on the original actual rotating lights ! I've recreated the deck lighting to match the to one on rheumatoid series .the subminiature color monitor actually works and there an SD player for shoeing LOST iN SPACE episodes on it. It's VERY nostalgic an experience The hull finish changed in the series so I've opted for an accurate dull smooth semi metallic grey (NO TWINKLES! ) Even the color monitor sound is to scale ! I've employed the season three color set up . It's kinda super seeing episodes on that monitor especially the beginning sequences of the series on it The micro switches for the functions are well hidden up in a landing pod rescess
...found this ship in full scale in a secret bunker beneath my house. I figured it was an abandoned government project or something that was forgotten about - I had to dust it off, give it some paint and oil a squeaky hatch - and then figure out the 60's tech but I have fun flying around the world in the thing. I haven't tried it in space yet. Anyone know how to sew a space suit? - love the video! J2 fan from way back.
Great Scott! (Did Prof Robinson ever say that?.. no matter) Episode with Smith clones, my fave, then "space fugitives". Blacker wire, I saw some super black paint on yt a while ago, paint your wire?
Most of the J2 Hero shots were filmed at between 96 and 180 FPS. The landing gear 'Hero' didn't have a space pod door. How do you lower and raise the legs? I plan to use a jackshaft system in my 4 footer. Is your fusion core a chaser system or mechanical spinning type? Really neat to see someone do a great job on the Jupiter 2.
Thanks, I used linear actuators for the landing legs and foot pad covers and micro-switches to control them. The fusion core is a mechanical spinning light system like the original and it gets its power through slip rings. The dome light is also motor driven and synced to the fusion core with an electronic speed control. Here's a video that shows the innards before I glued the two halves together. ruclips.net/video/v1AcO6Qt8YQ/видео.html
No, it’s not enough just to have the 4-foot model...we have to have a FULL-SIZED mock up too, just to show the neighbors when they come over to play Yahtzee 🤣. Well played, sir.
Actually, the Beauty-miniature and Space-Pod carrying one was 4 foot diameter. So its 1/2 studio-scale. I have that one too, its from LUNAR MODELS. Nice job, you made a really nice one, and I could LIVE in your film studio!
Darn good though I note that you had the Spacepod reenter its bay from the wrong side. The occupants would be trapped inside since the exit hatch would be on the wrong side.
I always like meeting other sci fi fans and they are always welcome to visit but it's such a small town that it would be a very small club. www.cosmicfilmsstudio.com/
Good job with the miniature - shoot at 24 fps and add some film grain in there and it will improve the realism. Great set design as well! Enjoyed this very much!
Shoot at FOUR TIMES NORMAL SPEED (Overcranking), and when projected at the normal 24fps, it will have the illusion of size and mass. Same technique used by Eiji Tsuburaya at TOHO in Japan, and used by Oscar winners LB Abbott, and The Lydecker Bros, and Eugene Lourie.
Wouldn’t it be something if there was a place that had life size mock up interiors of the Jupiter 2, Seaview and Spindrift that we can visit?
Star Trek is always getting all the hype. It's Absolutely Awesome that someone is keeping Lost in Space and the Jupiter 2 Alive and Well 👍👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you as incredible. Lost and Space forever.
Got to respect someone who enjoys classic sci-fi, solitude, and cats. Peaceful journey my friend.
forget the cats...
That transported me to another existence. Nice to visit but wouldn't want to stay there.
Amazing stuff
Always liked the Jupiter 2 , rspecially the engine sounds
That was so cool! Nice touch your cat taking the MGM lions place at the beginning. One of my favourite SciFi programs growing up. Myself being just a year younger than Will.
Thanks, I caught her hissing at my other cat.
I'm a Trekkie, but I love, Love, LOVE the engine sounds of the good old Jupiter 2!
Wow!!! Your own Jupiter 2!!!!!!!
😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻✌️

This is Sci Fi going to the next level . One thing I know , there is always someone who has done it before you can think of doing it ! Well Done !
Fantastic work on both the interior set and the model, looks just like the one from the original show.
Ok, you win the 'I Love lost in Space' medal!
all i can say is wow...i grew up on lost in space.
Enjoyed this series for 53-years! It inspired me like STAR TREK did!
Great model and great set too. 5 STARS!
REALLY NICE MODEL WORK AND JUPTIER 2 set!
I cannot believe I haven't seen this before. All your work is outstanding and this is beyond fabulous!
Another fantastic production by Bill Hedges!
Very cool Irwin would be proud.
This was great! Thanks for creating and sharing this, Bill! Your channel inspired me to queue up a few LIS episodes!
You are just a big kid, aren't ya? LOL I love it. Excellent job.
I really loved this!! I have an 8 inch diameter Jupiter 2 model in a diorama in my sci-fi room that is based on the LIS episode Ghost Planet. It looks very similar to your mock up. Cool!!!
They always liked to land on that same circle. :)
EVERYBODY GOT LOVE FOR THE JUPITER TWO . THANKS FOR POSTING .
Well done on creating your Lost in Space Dream.
I would love to have my room with the Jupiter 2 and the alien landscape. It would be a great escape into my own world. Great job!!
Outstanding on every level!!!
Gotta love the sound effect of the landing!
Everything you do is just extraordinary!
Geat video, fantastic workmanship.
Holy cow, I would have flipped if I had come across your place back when I was 7 years old!
That’s great! So much fun!

Absolutely superb job! The landing gear sequence is amazing!

Love that landing sound effects...
Bill, your work is Fantastic! I wish you could put together my 2 foot Jupiter 2. it would come out perfect. Best,Always,Bill!
Excellent! Speial effects are at Spielberg level!
really a great video and fantastic job with the 4 foot Jupiter 2-amazing!!
This is great. I am such a fan...

Magnificent! Now that's dedication. You sir are truly a fan's fan.
This is great viewing. The sound effects are mind blowing. Are the outfits for sale? I'd enjoy having a pair.
Thanks, the shirt is a one off, just made from splicing two different shirts together and adding some stripes.
Was there really a label that said STOP on the console?

Really beautiful!
Extremely impressive.....love what you have accomplished, hope my own production company manages as well.
If it makes a dime, it will be doing better than mine.
@@shanechandler3261 It's all done for fun in my retirement.
Very nice job. Great video. What was the beautiful music you used in the background towards the end?
It's some royalty free music that I get from my Audioblocks subscription service.
Can you actually buy the legs for the Jupiter 2 and make them work on the model?
I had to scratch build the mechanism using linear actuators. ruclips.net/video/v1AcO6Qt8YQ/видео.html

That was fantastic Bill. I thought I was watching the actual TV series!
Thanks, filming the same size Jupiter 2 as was on the series is something I can cross off my bucket list now. :)

Keep this up, looks fantastic!
How about showing movies in the theater & opening the concession stand I would be glad to buy some popcorn.
Unfortunately the old theater auditorium is now the stage, although there still are concessions in the restored lobby. :)
Omg! I would love to see that!
Darn good though I note that you had the Spacepod reenter its bay from the wrong side. The occupants would be trapped inside since the exit hatch would be on the wrong side.
Good catch.
\I like the boom sound when it hits....I used to like that on the show.
Great! Stabilize that wobble on landing and you will have nailed it!
Danger! Danger! Will Robson!
Veri good

He got it from the royalty free music service Audioblocks, it's called serious situation.
Wow, cool!
Bill Love It Looks Great. Question For You Have You Tried Using A Gyro in The Jupiter2 It Might Improve The Wire Lag.
Thanks, I already have too much stuff crammed inside as it is. :) I should have let it stop swinging as much before I filmed it.
Fantastic!*****
No fins?
Yup looks like Spielbergs work alright ??????
Very cool.
Awesome! And funny. ;)
nice done thanks
