I didn't realise these were so new, I've only had my EV since July and have used the Sainsbury's chargers at their Bridgend and Newport stores - very handily located just off the M4 junctions and a cheaper alternative (in terms of food at least) than stopping at the M4 services. I did notice how good the experience was at the time. Keep it up Sainsbury's.
I'm in Sainsbury's a couple of times a week but if the majority have charge points going forward it's a very convenient place to aim for . Very informative. 👍
Good to see Sainsbury’s taking charging facilities seriously. Obviously there are other supermarkets with charging but often it’s one or two charge points, often out of order or tucked away in a corner ICEd. Kempower satellites are a great choice as well, small form factor, easy to use and informative. I’m looking forward to seeing more of these popping up in Sainsbury’s across the UK. Thanks for this video, fantastic stuff. Also, amusing to see the BMW in the background living up the the stereotype and can’t park properly despite the generously sized bay!
It’s great to see Sainsbury’s taking the lead. They really have an opportunity to be market leaders if they can reduce the price. 60p a kWh is what I’d be willing to pay. It would be nice to see them partner with Octopus Electroverse.
My local Sainsburys put in 6 rapids a year or so ago. I've never seen more than 2 in use, and even seeing any there at all is unusual - probably too expensive.
Most people will shop locally to where they live so they are unlikely to be charging. Especially if they have home charging. This is an advantage to a small amount of users but expensive. If you don’t have home charging and do average miles a 30 to 40 min charge whilst you shop once a week is a great way to do it as you utilise down time. There are some in Leics just off the M1 and also on the A1 that I have considered during a journey. Usually I use Baldock on that stretch. Didnt realise they were open when the stores were closed. Would consider Fosse Park next time as it would be cheaper than at McDonalds and probably better availability 😀
@@adrianwood2566I think if you are able to charge at home it must seem like everyone can charge at home. I live on an estate that has parking areas with a green in between them and our homes so to us it seems like no-one could charge at home. Consequently chargers in the local supermarket are really handy...or would be if they were not just 7kW or 22kW chargers, often occupied by ev owners who don't plug in! 😡
Great episode, well done Andrew for securing that interview with Sainsbury smart charge product director - very knowledgeable chap. I'd second other suggestions to add the network to the Octopus Electroverse app. Good to see the Nectar points bonus. Hope they'll start to offer xx pence off charging with Nectar in the same way they do for their petrol stations: as a Sainsbury's shopper and an EV driver of nearly 7 years, it's always slightly riled me when the 10p-off-a-litre-of-fuel chitty is printed out at the checkout
Great interview and so illuminating, I feel there is so much potential knowledge to be gained from this, like the power infrastructure and all the difficulties in setting up a hub that the Govt could listen and learn. also what a great advert for EVs where you can charge up while doing your shopping.
Great interview, really informative and Sainsburys should be applauded for their foresight. It'll invariably lead to it's competitors having to make similar provision and logically you'd also expect it'll prompt a degree of downward movement in charging cost to the punter as a result.
Great video, although was that a £60 pre-charge.. ouch. Seems strange to have all the spots being accessible. Much like normal parking spots, shouldn't it just be a percentage.
Follow up question if you have ongoing contact. Do they have any plans to put Solar Panels over parts of their car parks? Bifacials over the charging bays would be a great start!
Great video Andrew and well done Sainsbury's..👍🏻 Also why can't people park properly, note to the lady opposite you in the BMW but living up to their reputation of course..
I think that this is the true answer for those without the ability to charge at home. A weekly charge at the supermarket whilst shopping has to be the answer.
Yep, no charger at home, waiting patiently for the Sainsbury's right next to where my wife works and where she parks to get some chargers.... Is there a list somewhere of which sites are next on the list to have chargers put in, i wonder, must check that out? Hope they will go on the Octopus Electroverse list. We found the local BP Pulse at Premier Inn came back on line after being told they were no longer going to be available, odd but such a relief. Great interview, Andrew, the only thing I was wanting the answer to was: why dont they put solar roofs over the charging bays to help with the expense and power draw on the grid? It always seems like such a missed opportunity not to use solar but I assume there is some technical or practical reason why not.🤔
Thanks so much Mr T for producing this info on the sainsbury charging network, I have been looking at the ones in the south. The one at Chichester is in status coming soon for almost 6 months. But as discussed there are over 60 sites to choose from around the country.
Excellent, well done Sainsbury's. My local one has got 4 free Pod Point fast chargers that for the last few years have been very unreliable and painfully slow, but I noticed the other day there is some serious work going on in the car park so I'm guessing some decent rapid chargers on the way.
We have these in Harrogate - same great set up and facilities. At 75p they are no use to me or others with home charging but its right next to the Yorkshire Showground and Event centre so will be useful for the hundreds of people visiting those.
Watching this I find myself distracted by the terribly badly parked blue ICE BMW in the background. If Sainsbury's bring this to Rugby we will switch our supermarket loyalty as nobody in Rugby offers a decent charging option at the moment.
The real question is will people divert away from using rugby gridserve or Tesla to use sainsburys instead on long journeys? Because they offer better food, less busy toilets and you could stretch your legs a bit more easily than at the services
Hehe ... an old lady who doesn't know how to drive ... :) And then there's the BMW driver that does the same thing at 19.26, they're clearly parked over the line and making the adjacent spot a lot smaller.
There are now some CHAdeMO to CCS converters on the market. Still new and relatively expensive. So do they work and are they worth it? Perhaps an idea for a future video
It seems highly unlikely to me that government will reduce VAT on public charging - they are already seeing a drop in fuel tax income as people migrate to EVs. I also can't understand how the mainstream charging companies claim they have to charge 75p a unit, when Tesla is so much more competitive?
Adjusting the price if fossil-fuel to kWh the cost of vat/duties is around 8p per kWh (@ 1.36 per Litre), whilst the vat/duties/levies in electricity are 15p per kWh (@ 45p per kWh). As EV adoption grows the electic duites can be reassigned to serve a fuel-duty role instead. This means there is room to reduce the VAT element on EV charging to make it similar in price overall to that of fossil-fuel.
@@GruffSillyGoat thanks. That's a useful way of looking at costs. Does it factor in that EV energy use is much more efficient at point of consumption vs fossil fuel? My point being that an ICE vehicle uses perhaps 3 or 4 times more kilowatts of energy to travel the same distance as an EV - hence perhaps currently pays more tax per mile?
@@chrispenn715 - It factors in the way the government may look at it to generate tax revenue. The way I tend to express the lower efficiency of ICE cars with respect to BEVs, is as a cost to the driver. That of the 8p paid in fossil-fuel duties/vat 4.8 to 6p is wasted (mainly as heat), whilst in an BEV of the 15p in taxes/duties only 0.75 to 2p is similarly lost.
Tesla make everything for the chargers in house, the tomb stones, the cabinets, the apps, the billing systems, everything is developed by Tesla. They don’t need to pay other companies to do anything but install the chargers.
@Joeb4iley - have you replied to the correct post, I cannot reconcile this comment with the discussion above? However, one small point of clarification Tesla do used third-party APIs in their software (some of which is licenced). They also use standards based protocols in their chargers - the CCS protocol is used both in North American NACS and European/Asian/Oceania CC2Combo connectors, plus GB/T protocol in the cars sold in China. I'm not not aware if the use of these standards attracts a licence fee or not (might just be professional and documentation fees paid to the standards bodies involved). Some of the component assemblies in the charger cabinets (common swithgear such as isolators) and charge point pedestals are bought in as well, for example the screens units and the contactless payment terminals on the V4 tomb stones in Europe (the contactless payment terminals have to be from validated providers). Some of the electronics PCB production could be outsourced to industrial partners as well (it's too expensive to perform this in house except for R&D purposes). It's probably more accurate to say Tesla designs and assembles everything in house, but integrated a mix of their own and third-party components defined to Tesla's own specifications.
This was a really interesting video and good to see supermarkets roll out this type of infrastructure. I would have to liked to see you ask about if they thought of solar panel coverage over the charging bays, like the ones in France, and if that would have any impact on the cost of charging
Refreshing to see a supermarket installing rapid chargers. The slow 7kW chargers the others install just don’t make sense. A 30/45 min shopping trip would give you a full charge on a rapid, where a 7kW unit, only gives you a few percent. Good video 👌🏻👍🏻
IMO 7Kw does have advantages. For the same investment most of the car park bays could be covered and slower charging may encourage more frequent visits, which would be good for the supermarket footfall. Upfront cost would be far less so each Kwh could be cheaper, given this was one of the reasons given for the high cost for fast charging. Most people will have travelled a very short distance to be there anyway. I will admit that combining a weekly shop with weekly full charge, for those lacking home charging, is a compelling argument though.
Great execution in parking layout and charger design, but I'm amazed at 75p when Superchargers are as low as 1/3 of this. Surely Sainsbury's can discount to 40p or so if you are shopping there. Else may as well charge at home.
Good work by Sainsburys although the future expansion plans came over as a bit grey Lets hope even more sites are developed and that other supermakets are listening too!
Interesting. Obviously Tesco was one of the first supermarkets to take the lead on EV charging. Certainly in our area, they haven’t improved their network, and we usually go to a different option. Would definitely try Sainsbury’s in the future
One important key to get cheaper charging is to reduce the cost for the operator. One way to do this is for the user to accept aggressive power sharing, maybe only 25kW guaranteed per stall. This reduces grid charges, a saving that can be passed on to the consumer. A 8 stall charging site with 25kW per stall uses 200kW from the grid. If you are alone you get 200kW, if it is full you get 25... The site in the video has cabinets capable of 400 kW over 10 bays/stalls. If all taken 6 cars gets 50kW and 4 cars gets 25kW.
If they dropped their price to for example 49p/kWh they'd get a load more business. BUT a great initiative from my favourite supermarket. I don't live in the the UK any more, and have dreams about Sainsbury's. Every visit now is a kind of pilgrimage. I might be weird. ..
Great information on what and how Sainsburys see things going in the EV World. I hope that they will expand into some of the more empty areas where they have stores. I also think the VAT part is more of an excuse as it would help but 10p less per kWh, but it is still expensive. A few years ago we had less than 50p available. We need to get back to the 45p area.
The only thing I disagreed with is that you can grab a coffee and something to eat, they shut all their cafes a couple of years ago so now you can't actually grab a coffee unless there's another retailer nearby.
Smart Charge is the only ultra-rapid I have used so far (as I go to Sainsbury's a lot). It is a very good experience - the charging starts within seconds. The main problem is it can be too quick as I had to run out with my milkshake when my phone told me it had finished! That was only at 100kWh speed too.
@@MrEV yes quite possible, shame they are not as cheap as Tesco with there PodPoint charging. But maybe it’s a start and hopefully things will get better and cheaper.
Interesting that they chosen to do this themselves, gives them more capacity to manage things like overstay, adjust overstay times based on individual customer shopping habits, offer customers shopping discounts for quieter period when they use the EV chargers to balance what types of EVs are using the chargers at different times, include the charging session on a shopping bill
Very interesting video and great to hear of some of the difficulties from the operator persepective. Electroverse support please! PS Great to see the blue BMW in the back of shot keeping up the reputation for great parking...
Well Done Sainsbury's, but........... And all EV Charging Stations, Why oh Why do they not put canopies over the charging area, with lights and they could even add cctv as do all, or most ICE fuel stations. I know we EVers are a hardy lot, well we have to be to ignore the jibes from the ICE fraternity, but a bit of shelter would help. OR, does that mean that EVers are hardier than ICE drivers 🙂. Thanks for getting that interview Andrew. To answer the other question about joining up with other card payment companies, like you I use Octopus/Electroverse card, so Mr Sainsbury can you add that card to your list..... please. Oh forgot, they could add Solar to the canopies as they have done with some of their stores.
Very interesting an well presented video. Surprised to hear that there is some speculation going on with DNO applications, perhaps some regulation is required. Personally I charge at home, use a granny charger along side Octopus Go and using the car to schedule charging, works for me,but, I have a 5 miles each way commute. I do use rapid chargers for longer trips though and welcome the expansion of the network. Keep the videos coming😊
When I watch this excellent interview and realize what good things are happening in the UK with installation of the infrastructure then I think what is going to happen for the next four years in the US, it makes me sad that we will be waisting so much time installing this infrastructure and transitioning to EVs when we should be leading the charge (pun intended). My hope is that every stall one day will have either a DC rapid charger or level 2 EVSE with a solar canopy, unfortunately I don't think I will see this in my lifetime.
Still a perk of savings with Nectar on your shopping which would cover some of the charging. There’s often fuel discounts based on your shopping so am sure that will be tweaked. Check if Electroverse have discount with Kempower. Probably haven’t. As it appears to be a completely separate business they won’t be keen on making a loss. Maybe test the Chademo with the Leaf. Who do you expect to fit your home wallbox?! Sometimes wonder if Eon tethered one would have been better value than what I have got but that’s irrelevant now.
Kempower is the charger manufacturer so Electroverse negotiate discounts with some Charge Point Operators. I haven't made a decision on a home wallbox yet. Fairly urgent though really as the granny charger isn't ideal!
I know one of the other charging operators has gone down teh Tesla route in that you can register you car with there chargers so once setup you can plug and charge on there network. With this roll out why don't they try the same thing. It would make it worth plugging even for the shortest stops, even if it is only a few kW's at least the charger is not sitting there ideal, just a thought. Good video, how many nector points did you get🤣😂
I’ve been following the Sainsburys Smart Charge roll out for awhile now as it really does look like a brilliant initiative by them. What site were you at for the video? Think the coverage in the SE isn’t too good at the moment (as the chap explained in the video), I check from time to time for my local store, but still not there yet. Was funny to see the two BMW both parking abysmally in the background 😂
The chargers look good, and have used once before without a problem. Something reassuring to know that if I go on a long trip I can look for a sainsburys and be able to find a rapid charger that is available and works.
Is it not just Osprey but under different branding? It even looks like the same fonts are being used on the signage and the price works out about the same with the same chargers and power rating being used also!? It would be good to see some type 2 chargers because I may be more than half an hour in the supermarket and if the car is charged then I'll be blocking the charger, but also I often park in Sainsbury's car parks to go have lunch in town before doing my shopping and so a Type 2 charger would be perfect - putting 33kwh's into the battery in that time and not blocking the charger! Edit: Just seen the end of the video! I have the same car as you Andrew (exactly, just in silver) and can't charge at home at the moment! I say at the moment because I live in a terrace house and would have to run a cable over the footpath in front, but don't want to hook it up to a plug inside over night - although there's an ID3 and Leaf locally that do just that, the 1st with a cable tidy and the 2nd without! I will want a plug outside but don't really want the expense of fitting a Type 2 charger in case the council suddenly change their mind and tell people we can't run a cable across their path! It is difficult to find places to charge and thanks to you I've downloaded the EVDC app and I'll now be able to charge the car for cheaper than I used to fuel my old Golf at an Osprey charger - unfortunately it's in a hotel car park and costs £1 to park there! It is annoying that there's companies out there charging 75p/kwh, I always like to think that my break even point on the Golf is 50p/kwh, so is does seem as if we're being taken as cash cows for these charge operators - especially in places like supermarket car parks where we don't have to shop or even charge while we do and could always shop somewhere else! EG Lidl at 51p/kwh for most of the weekly shop, which is a much slower charger but 90 mins there (the max wait time) should be good enough for most cars out there - the most I've seen is 46kw's, so at best 69kwh 20% to 80% should cover all cars! So why would I charge while shopping at Sainsbury's unless I'm wealthy and don't care about their inflated (in my experience) charger and grocery prices!? NB: I didn't buy an EV to save fueling costs - it's more the environment and health benefits (I got Asthma, adult onset, from working alongside the road network) and I couldn't bare knowing that I was harming people taking my Golf to even the corner shop down the road!
Great interview and I hope our local Sainsbury's joins in. I couldn't help be distracted by the 2 BMWs in the background upholding the reputation of their driver's parking skills.😂
Really cool seeing that your channel has reached a point where you’re now able to get those types of interviews!
Good to hear this kind of thing and hopefully they'll keep rolling this out. Electroverse would be the obvious partner for payment for me.

Love what they’re doing and hopefully they will keep rolling stations out.
I love that they have a clear strategy
My local Sainsburys put in 6 rapids a year or so ago. I've never seen more than 2 in use, and even seeing any there at all is unusual - probably too expensive.
Maybe the fact that parking needs to be paid puts people off if they weren't already doing shopping there
Most people will shop locally to where they live so they are unlikely to be charging.
0-500 is a year is absolutely amazing. Great video Andrew!
Great info, checked my local Sainsburys, and there are 10 new rapid chargers, Wasn't aware ?
Great video, although was that a £60 pre-charge.. ouch.
Seems strange to have all the spots being accessible. Much like normal parking spots, shouldn't it just be a percentage.
No real difference to pay at the pump for petrol other than the hold time. I've seen 2 days for pay at the pump before now.
@@IMBlakeley Yes petrol was £100 pre-pay when I used to drive ICEs. Pay on credit card and it'll never be a problem.
Follow up question if you have ongoing contact.
Do they have any plans to put Solar Panels over parts of their car parks? Bifacials over the charging bays would be a great start!
Good interview I wish we had a supermarket like this in Australia
Forward thinking company well done sainsburys keep up the hardworking 👏
Great video Andrew and well done Sainsbury's..👍🏻
Also why can't people park properly, note to the lady opposite you in the BMW but living up to their reputation of course..
It always seems like such a missed opportunity not to use solar but I assume there is some technical or practical reason why not.🤔
Thanks for highlighting this - useful to know, esp for trips away
A great option for anyone who can't charge at home, but at 10 times the cost of an off-peak home charge 😮. Still a big headscratcher .
I must agree, great item to cover but the parking in the background (mainly BMW's) was diabolical !
Thanks so much Mr T for producing this info on the sainsbury charging network, I have been looking at the ones in the south. The one at Chichester is in status coming soon for almost 6 months. But as discussed there are over 60 sites to choose from around the country.
6 months?! Ouch - that must be a hold-up with the DNO then.
Excellent, well done Sainsbury's. My local one has got 4 free Pod Point fast chargers that for the last few years have been very unreliable and painfully slow, but I noticed the other day there is some serious work going on in the car park so I'm guessing some decent rapid chargers on the way.
Well done Sainsbury's. Hopefully my nearest branch get these chargers installed cause my Mum has an electric car so it would be a great help
Yeah I immediately noticed that "parking pig". I'm sure Andrew filmed using that angle on purpose 🙂
Me too. What I've come to expect from the sort of entitled drivers who think they are more important than everyone else.
It’s a BMW. Together with Audi & Mercedes, they're exempt from traffic laws 😅
The real question is will people divert away from using rugby gridserve or Tesla to use sainsburys instead on long journeys?
Because they offer better food, less busy toilets and you could stretch your legs a bit more easily than at the services
Hehe ... an old lady who doesn't know how to drive ... :)
And then there's the BMW driver that does the same thing at 19.26, they're clearly parked over the line and making the adjacent spot a lot smaller.
There are now some CHAdeMO to CCS converters on the market. Still new and relatively expensive. So do they work and are they worth it? Perhaps an idea for a future video
They do, there's even a guy in Florida using a Chademo to CCS paired with a CCS to NAC so he can use Superchargers.
Crikey. That’s an impressive development speed. Sainsbury’s can be rightfully proud of that rate. Others could learn from their experience. ❤
Electroverse network please :). Great interview and i want Richards Job
Excellent interview
Oops forgot to mention. I would like to see Electroverse partnering. Please
If they dropped their price to for example 49p/kWh they'd get a load more business.
BUT a great initiative from my favourite supermarket. I don't live in the the UK any more, and have dreams about Sainsbury's. Every visit now is a kind of pilgrimage. I might be weird. ..
Great to see progress like this 👍🏼
They got this company doing charging in Watford and it’s been fantastic.
Wasn't Instavolt 30p/kWh when they first started? Good times!
Great to see a supermarket getting on board with EV charging a good payment partner for me and all other Motability drivers would be Go Charge
Good video big all I could focus on was the blue BMW parked over 2 bays 😂
They should partner with Electroverse.
9:30 was going to ice it and changed their mind when seen on camera 😂😂
That wasn't an ev bay. i think they were nervous about being in shot.
Outtakes at the end are a good idea!
HaHa tried Sainsburys at Stevenage, only 1 charger was working out of 8, and its bloody expensive as well, will not be using them again.
😬 Is that a new one? Maybe there were teething issues?!
@@MrEV yes quite possible, shame they are not as cheap as Tesco with there PodPoint charging.
But maybe it’s a start and hopefully things will get better and cheaper.
Supermarkets are the perfect solution. Get your week's supply of car electrons along with your week's supply of shopping.
Fantastic to see this sort of content!
Great video. Thanks
Good interview Andrew.
It does seem some red tape for them on setting up, and hold backs for the user on tax of the feed.
Classic Beemers! This was their Richmond store.
The chargers look good, and have used once before without a problem. Something reassuring to know that if I go on a long trip I can look for a sainsburys and be able to find a rapid charger that is available and works.
Amazing parking by the BMW in the background as per 🙄
Electro verse would be a good team to be with for Sainsbury's for charging
Really interesting video Andrew. Anyone else notice that BMW drivers don't seem to be able to park between two lines?
If I see a car parked like this, I tend to park my motorbike in the space provided. I had one driver have a go at me for being inconsiderate 😂
Great content Andy!
One of your best videos
No, it's not
