I remember when this came out. The source is Alan Niven who was GNR's old manager. He sent the original DAT tapes to fans and the songs were converted to FLAC. This was in 2007.

Dan Boniface what you could be referring to is not sustain. Its feedback; which can be done be cranking the amp loud, and holding the guitar next to it, which makes it resonate into a cool sustain-like sound.
Sustain is how long a note carries after hitting the string (the strings vibration) Feedback is when the amplified signal makes its way back into the guitar signal. There's plenty of both in this song. I have a home studio where I have to use amp and cab sims which makes it very difficult to achieve feedback. Usually I'll have to reverse an audio event to get the feedback effect.

As a guitarist, this song is the reason I gave it a shot and picked it up myself at the age of 7. Purity in tone. That said, the lyrics have another element that I cannot put words to and complete the song that I consider the most magical song I've heard. It seems like he is speaking my thoughts at pivotal moments in my life. It feels like a soundtrack to my life basically. I didn't understand why I was so drawn to this song at such an early age. I loved everything Gn'R, but this one stood out. I still listen to it everyday. It's not a technical masterpiece but rather an opus of taste and feel.

@@EricRosemusic That Piano solo!
Absolutely

I tried to replicate his UYI tone. I think he uses chorus and especially flanger to get this beautiful tone.
rustedhero888 juan solo on youtube is pretty close to slashs different tones
Hay videos de la historia de la creación de Estranged, ese sonido de la guitarra a Slash se lo enseño un señor que no recuerdo el nombre.

Such a beautiful underrated song.
I feel Estranged is better than Don't Cry and November Rain. But November Rain got pushed more as the big hit from these albums.
Underrated song??? Where did you get that??

One of the greatest songs ever written. A true masterpiece. Will live on forever. Something that will still be around long after I am done and gone.

La obra maestra de los Guns
When you're talkin' to yourself
And nobody's home

You came in this world alone
(Alone)
So nobody ever told you baby
How it was gonna be
So what'll happen to you baby
Guess we'll have to wait and see

Old at heart but I'm only twenty eight
And I'm much too young
To let love break my heart
Young at heart but it's getting much too late
To find ourselves so far apart
I don't know how you're s'posed to find me lately
An what more could you ask from me
How could you say that I never needed you
When you took everything
Said you took everything from me
Young at heart an it gets so hard to wait
When no one I know can seem to help me now
Old at heart but I musn't hesitate
If I'm to find my own way out
Still talkin' to myself
And nobody's home

So nobody ever told us baby
How it was gonna be
So what'll happen to us baby
Guess we'll have to wait and see
When I find out all the reasons
Maybe I'll find another way
Find another day
With all the changing seasons of my life
Maybe I'll get it right next time

Got your head out of the clouds
You're back down on the ground
And you don't talk so loud
An you don't walk so proud

Well I jumped into the river
Too many times to make it home
I'm out here on my own, an drifting all alone

To read between the lines
'Cause I see the storm getting closer
And the waves they get so high
Seems everything we've ever known's here
Why must it drift away and die
I'll never find anyone to replace you

Without you
I knew the storm was getting closer
And all my friends said I was high
But everything we've ever known's here
I never wanted it to die
