You are correct about trying to grow from seed. I had colors from bright red to purple and black. Even had some yellow with purple lines. (I had saved seeds from some black petunias I had purchased)
Yes, the genetics of these hybrids means that seed will rarely be true to type BUT can give interesting results if you do get viable seeds and don't mind the variation.
Any multi-purpose compost that is free draining can be used. I personally prefer multi-purpose composts that have soil (loam) added as soil based composts don't dry out as quickly as soil-less types.
Most large European garden centres should have them during the summer season, so watch out for them in June-August. They are often sold as individually potted plants, in flower, in mid season. I got mine from a garden centre in the South West of UK. Cuttings are best taken in August-September when the plants are large enough to take cuttings from and you still have 4-8 weeks of warm weather for rooting. Then overwinter indoors on a windowsill for the following summer.

What type of soil is best for it to grow

Where can I buy them? They’re so rare. How do you make a cutting to propagate them?
