    We have a really large terracotta pot that we can't put in a bucket, any idea how we can solve the problem?

    • @plantwithmatt
      @plantwithmatt 5 дней назад

      Good question! I have not thought about outsized pots before. I would try placing the pot on its side and then placing some old rags or towels that were heavily soaked in the solution over the outside of the pot. Don't wring them out, make sure they are good and soggy. Leave for the solution to soak in and then see if the stains / deposits wipe off afterwards. You might have to repeat the process a few times but it will probably work. Goodluck!

      @@MichaelCutler-rx1xe A monster of a pot huh? I would say you have two options. Firstly is to spray the vinegar solution onto it and you might have to spray many times as its going to evaporate quickly. The second is to wrap it with the soggy towels or press them up against it, one part / area at a time. You may have to use thick string or even heavy duty cling-film to hold the towels in place. You can get thick plastic for wrapping from a packaging supply company as its used to wrap up boxes on pallets.

      @@jeffrob5791 The seeds will fall quite close to the plants rather than getting blown around as they are quite large, so they don't spread far in a single season. But the easiest thing to do is to cut them off as the pods start to ripen. Its not as fiddly or time consuming as it may sound as the pods are produced in clusters so its quite easy to remove them. Then in spring you can check the ground for seedlings. They are distinctive in appearance and can easily be spotted and pulled up.

    I purchased 7 tubers and planted them over a month ago and so far NOTHING.

    • @plantwithmatt
      @plantwithmatt 23 дня назад

      Sadly, far too many of the tubers being sold by bulb merchants are dead. They are stored too long, and too dry and completely dry up. I'd suggest digging each tuber up and see if there is any sign of root growth or a shoot developing. If no roots or shoot emerging, scrape the outer skin and and take a small nick out of the tuber with a sharp knife. It should be cream in colour and quite firm, something like the flesh of an apple. If its dry, spongy and brown then the tuber is dead. If any tubers are the right colour, they will need a fair deal of heat to get them started. Place in a greenhouse if you have one or in the warmest spot you can find such as a south facing window in direct sun or even an airing cupboard or close to a hot water boiler / tank. The tubers do not mind direct sun and they do not need light to sprout. Keep them just moist (but not soaking wet) at all times and check for sprouting every few days. I hope you have some that are still viable!

    Many people report problems breaking dormancy with Colocasias bought as dormant tubers. The reason (sadly) is that most of the tubers are dead when planted as they have completely dried out during too many months of storage overwinter at the bulb sellers. I have received several myself this year that were ordered from reputable suppliers but were completely desiccated and dead upon arrival. I am in the process of growing several Colocasias from tubers this summer so will bring you some new Colocasia videos in the autumn of 2024 that will show you what live tubers look like and how to grow them in cooler climates.

    How to plant through seed

    • @plantwithmatt
      @plantwithmatt Месяц назад

      Sow in pots of multi purpose compost and lightly cover the seeds with compost. keep slightly moist at all times and warmth is needed for germination. Getting the seeds is quite difficult. The seedpods explode when touched when the seed is ripe. If you hand pollinate the flowers you should get some pods and can pick them when the seed is slightly under-ripe and place in a box or bag to dry and burst or place a paper bag over the pods when they are on the plant so the seed will be caught when they burst.

      If your water contains minerals it won't make any difference if you boil the water or let it sit -unfortunately. The only thing you can do is soak the pots in vinegar when the mineral build-up gets heavy. That will probably mean that you will need to clean the pots using this method, more than once per season.

    I got my first one yesterday. Repotted and separated all the plants that were in the pot. Is it normal for these wilt after repotting? It was such a beautiful looking plant and now it’s all sad. I have it outside in full/partial sun depending on the clouds. How long should it take for it to bounce back?

    • @plantwithmatt
      @plantwithmatt 2 месяца назад

      It will be fine in time Michael, but it may take a few months. The wilting will be due to the root damage (unavoidable) sustained when dividing the plant. Don't be tempted to add extra water to revive it, it needs new root growth first. Too much water too early can lead to rot. Keep it evenly moist and wait for the new root growth to establish and for new leaves to form and then increase water. They will probably benefit from some partial shade by placing near to trees or shrubs for a few weeks rather than relying on cloudy days. You can place back in full sun once new leaves are forming. They will look sad for a while and the leaves may deteriorate even further but once the rhizomes are settled and have sufficient new root growth, new leaves will be produced and the plants will look good again. These plants can shed all of their leaves if they are disturbed or dried out and as long as the rhizomes do not rot, they will resprout and fully recover. Good luck!

    Question: why are the nodes on mine not producing roots? I also had 3 nodes that didn't produce leaves. Thank you in advance.

    • @plantwithmatt
      @plantwithmatt 3 месяца назад

      Interesting. I have not counted the number of rootless nodes before! I find that nodes are more likely to produce roots if they are in direct contact with the material (moss pole, stake, branch) that the plant is climbing. Lengths of stem that have some rootless nodes are more common with growths that are hanging in air and are not actively attached to, or climbing a support. I wouldn't worry about rootless nodes unless the plant is obviously suffering. Most plants will prioritise root growth over leaf growth if there are insufficient roots. Many of the roots on plants such as these are climbing roots that help the plant to climb and anchor to its support whilst the roots lower down at the base of the plant in the pot will take up most of the plant's water requirement. If you want to encourage rooting at the nodes I would tie the stems tightly (temporarily tight) to the support and directly mist the stems every couple of days to keep the nodes moist whilst reducing overall watering so that you force the plant to increase its root mass. But if all looks ok apart from a few rootless nodes, your plant is probably in good health. ;-)
