I've long been a RCV advocate! I'm thrilled you think it's a good thing, too. SO happy you made this video... once I get somewhere safe I'll share it around... really think this needs to get adopted nationally sooner than later!! (running from hurricane #2 in FL - you were right about how storms can impact activism, Sean, damn! Not that I doubted you but we're exhausted and freaked over here!)
Welcome to Milwaukee Sean! Beautiful weather here! Hope you get a chance to enjoy our beautiful lakefront. Thought I saw on the news President Biden will be here next week as well. Thanks for all the information you take the time to share.
To get rank-choice voting, we first need to vote Dems in so that the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and For the People Act can get passed into laws, which would outlaw gerrymandering. That gets passed, then we have an avenue for ranked-choice voting nationwide. People like Marjorie Taylor Green and Gym Jordan wouldn't make it past the first round of voting with how far right they are.
I have to say your comments about that guy yesterday were hilarious to watch. And it felt like you were speaking for me, the thoughts and feelings that I have.
Ranked Choice is on the Colorado ballot. I just voted (from overseas) yesterday and noticed it. I guess it's being expanded to cover more primaries? I hope I ticked the right box... Here in the U.K. most Liberals are pressing for Proportional Representation, but I prefer Ranked Choice. In the rest of Europe, P.R. is a big reason why Far Right parties are gaining traction. It gives fringe parties a boost. But France is the exception with R.C. that recently kept out a surge from the Far Right and LePen.
I would love a follow up episode on how rank choice is doing in countries that have been doing rank choice voting for a while now. I was a huge fan when I first heard about it. Since then Scott Galloway on the podcast Pivot poopooed it, and now I can't remember why. But it made me sad. I'm still rooting for it.
We've had Preferential Voting (ranked-choice voting) in Australia for a long time (1980 I think). It means your vote is not wasted after one count as your second, third etc choices are counted if your favourite is knocked out in first round of voting. We're very happy with it generally but I think it is supported by a couple of other factors... ie we have an independent Australian Electoral Commission which is in charge of elections and re-draws electorate boundaries by a formula of the number of representatives to population numbers in any particular area - enshrined in law! So, as there are population flows and changes, the boundaries are automatically re-drawn by apolitical, independent processes. The states are bound by these laws too. So no government is in charge of boundaries or elections - ie no gerrymandering. In Australia we also have legislated election funding via reimbursement of election costs. If the candidate of a registered political party receives at least 4% of the vote they receive approx $3.40 per vote in recompense. (We have an Election Funding Transparency Register) Aside from that, all political donations over $1000 must be reported...and although there are ways around this and I'm sure there's is plenty of shady money around, we don't generally have politicians becoming incredibly wealthy by becoming a politician.
@@CLSBPolitics Hi Sean, we used to, especially in Queensland where the old Country/Conservative Party under Joh Bielke Peterson ruled for 32 years via gerrymandering.... Not anymore -since the creation under law of the Aust Electoral Commission no state or federal government could redistribute or enact laws that would allow any sort of changes to boundaries. We also have compulsory voting - maximum enfranchisement!! Love it. (Also we have a 5 week election campaign)
A big problem (I'm not sure if that's the right word) is that a large majority of voters don't check out the candidates, their voting history and their personal self. How did all these crazies get in office to begin with? Where did JD come from and so soon?
Federal election laws need passed & implemented. That would stop the gerrymandering & these Red State manipulations. We're in a hell of a mess to add something else on top of the chaos. It's hard for people to choose between 2 candidates let alone rank 4 choices. Maybe I just don't understand rank choice voting.
Thank you Sean ❤
Thanks Sean.

This 7% explains A LOT!
7% That's mind blowing, thanks Sean, you're a great teacher.
Thanks for all you do Sean!
Thank you Sean
I didn't know any of this. Thank you, Sean! I love the math, too. I bet it is banned in Alabama, then.

I'm a Mainer and I love Ranked Choice Voting!

Mind boggling information Sean.
Holy Cow!! 7% pick 87%....that is mind-blowing! Thanks for informing us!
AK has rank voting. Seems to work there.
I rather get rid of gerrymandering. I don't like rank choice voting because that is how Eric Adams is the mayor.

This method recently allowed France to keep out the Far Right. It's also used in Ireland and Australia.

I don't think you have the amount of gerrymandering. If you do we should do a show on it.

Is a jungle primary the same as ranked choice?
Yes
Voted in DC AND SAID YES TO RCV. Thanks for the video. (I did some election googling)
Your statistic (7% of voters vote in primary elect congress) is exactly why I've switched parties for the primary and voted republican.
WOW --- 7%
Oh No
Oh my
Namaste
California has ranked choice voting. That is eight states that use the system.

Which states have it and which are voting on it.
Thank you so much, Sean!
