    I was kicking myself for a while for not getting the HDR 50 and getting the HDR 68 instead. I just assumed a smaller projectile at a similar speed would have greater penetrating potential. But the difference in kinetic energy makes the HDR 68 the real winner.

    • @AirgunAlley
      @AirgunAlley  Год назад +2

      I’m with you 100%! I’ve been suggesting the 68 over the 50 ever since I first laid my hands on it. I’m happy you’ve come to that conclusion my friend!

    • @jayquick6520
      @jayquick6520 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@Beggars-Belief after the removal of the restrictor you’ll get about 5 or 6 solid shots out of the HDR 68 that I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of. I live in the US and own many firearms but the HDR 68 is the only gun at night time that sits next to the bed. I do trust it. My use of it was to provide enough time to unlock the gun cabinet and load up an AR or a shotgun. After practicing with it I have decided the next step in my plan might not be necessary. That’s only with the removal of the restrictor however. The gun will come from the factory more geared towards paintball or pepper ball use. I’m not a fan of the use of pepper balls in my home. So pull that restrictor and use heavy kinetic balls. Such as rubber steel or even nylon. The effects of the pepper balls do take a minute and by the time they do the attacker might close the gap and even expose you to the pepper. IMO

  • @rick31869
    @rick31869 Год назад +9

    i like leaving the tiny hole co2 restrictor in because it gives almost half more consistent shots , more regulated !!!you might loose maybe 20 FPS one the first and maybe 2nd shot , but your rest 6 or 8 shots will be so much more than the one that doesnt have it ! . i really recommend you leave co2 restrictor in hdr.50 and please remove the valve block ,you will go to 18 to 20 joules easy ,and if you put a 2 piece tuning barrel you will goto 25j plus !!! it all boils down to this ,do you want 6 powerful shots for personal defense or do you want double or close to triple the shots per co2 fill that still have twice to three times the stock power but more shots for target shooting and practice ? there are so many things you can do besides worrying about the restrictor to custom design your marker for your exact purpose intended !!!!

    I still prefer round balls for the HDRs. When fired from a smoothbore gun, the bullets tend to tumble in the air, which means they don't hit straight. With round bullets it doesn't matter, but with pointy ones it means that they often hit the target with their side or even back, negating all pointy tip advantage. They look cool, but they are terrible in practice.

If your target is far away, I’m sure the chances of it getting hit by the point are reduced. But from 20/30ft - you’ll most likely get hit from the front of the slug…

    It makes big entry holes but that's about it, I assume it's because it's only 12g co2 powered. I'm sure the PCP rifle will definitely penetrate much deeper and most likely go through all the test. I know a simple .177 break barrel pellet rifle would enter and exit all test. Another channel filled a coconut with ballistics gel and had no issue entering on first hit and even exiting the other side. My .177 break barrel shooting lead at 1000fps or alloy at 1200fps has been able to punch through 5/8" plywood at fairly good distance.

      Hi Matthew, you make good points - but we need to separate the apples from the oranges.
      The whole point of these weapons and ammo are to be less-lethal, as that’s the category they fall under.
      So you want them to really hurt, to deter and perhaps to knock out someone, without killing them. And remember 50 cal is a huge caliber compared to the .177 which is like a needle in comparison. PCP is designed for hunting, so we would absolutely expect full penetration.
      I know, there’s a lack of visual satisfaction (for that I’d suggest some of my pcp videos), but these Zrams are doing their job well.
      Thanks again!

      @@AirgunAlley ya nothing against the ammo, although they do look deadly, I've seen several of your videos just not the pcp ones. While back the darts lol definitely wouldn't feel good and would be boarderline lethal. If the objective is a good non lethal round perhaps rate on accuracy vs penetration since any thing coming out those will hurt for damn sure. Want to say you tested a dense rubber slug , if non lethal is the point those were best ones I've seen you shoot, accurate and prolly just as if not more painful then beanbags similar to rubber bullets fired out of a 12gauge . I'd have to go back and check which they were. Didn't know that was point of the test so wasn't knocking anything.

    for NON LETHAL home defense, the standard stock 11j HDR50 with standard concorde defender ammo should be fine, right? i believe theyre rubber or nylon (1.3 gram). these upgrades and alternative ammos are more for fun, correct? i dont feel like trying it on myself to find out, but i want to hear from others here if you think its enough or if i should modify it for more joules or get other types of ammo, what i hope to acomplish is for this to cause enough pain for the intruder to not want to be shot again and stop/give up/run away if its a person up to no good that want to cause me harm, kind of like you would feel if youre hit hard with a sjambok, baseballbat or similar and you DONT want that again. Thats what i hope it will do.

    • @AirgunAlley
      @AirgunAlley  Год назад +5

      Hello my friend and great question. Also, this is the main question (and discussion) ever since these guns have been circulating.
      I think an honest answer would be: it all really depends. If your intruder is an unarmed person, wearing light clothes and generally not desperate to absolutely get what he wants - then absolutely, you should be fine.
      But if the intruder is all drugged up and doesn’t feel pain, armed and determined, then it would be safer to avoid pointing an HDR 50 at him and just run for the door.
      In Europe you obviously have a much bigger chance to find your self in the first scenario. Here in the US you need to be really careful.
      In conclusion, I think they’re great weapons to have, obviously the more powerful the better and also keep a variety of slugs in the same magazine is helpful. Alternating pointy ones, metal ballbearing ones and pepper balls. That way you have a bigger chance on a larger variety of scenarios. Hope this helps and indeed hopefully you’ll get more replies and points of view…

    • @someonethatisachristian
      @someonethatisachristian Год назад +1

      @@AirgunAlley It helps alot, thanks! Well, home defense is as valid of a question in europe as in the US depending on where you live but you cant defend yourself with gunpowder firearms without breaking the law, and getting a liscence etc is a hazzle, so this is one alternative. Since winter clothing is used for much of the year too, i should probably look for the types of ammo you tested here since it will probably go trough the clothes. And the HDR50 is not my only defensive item, i intend to use it to stop/chase away the threat FIRST, i want it to hurt enough to STOP whatever goes on but not to put a person down completely. Its a fine balance i know. But i have a (legal) plan B i hope i dont have to use if this is not enough.

    It *seems* the .50's are more effective than the .68's, yes? With your experience with the "normal" round ones, are the .50's more effective with those as well? It seems to my limited knowledge that their lighter weight and reduced wind resistance would mean they go further faster harder, yes?

    • @AirgunAlley
      @AirgunAlley  Год назад +1

      Hi Scott, I would agree with you. These are very interesting, because they’re a hybrid between a piercing projectile and a “knock out” one. They don’t fully penetrate, but they hit hard.
      I tried them on a ballistic dummy recently and even then it was hard to judge their performance.
      They impact hard, but don’t penetrate. So it’s hard to evaluate how much pain they actually inflict. I suspect they hurt a lot, despite it being visually “improvable”.

    To expensive for that little extra power.
    The winner up to date.. the Devastator.

    • @AirgunAlley
      @AirgunAlley  Год назад +1

      Absolutely, cheap they’re not cheap. And the Devastators have that penetrating factor that so far very few have matched. BUT, those are the effects on coconuts and water jugs.
      On a person, I think these bring a lot more pain than a ballbearing slug.
      Anyway, we’ll soon have the moment of truth. I have a cool ballistic dummy on the way - and I plan to test a whole variety of slugs on it so we can finally compare them a bit better against each other… stay tuned my friend

    are these non lethal?

    • @AirgunAlley
      @AirgunAlley  Год назад +1

      In most cases yes, they hurt, but don’t penetrate enough to kill. Of course, this could change if shot in an eye or temple at close range

    considering the precision in the cans and the melon I think you are much closer than 6 meters?

      Not unless the desk moved without me noticing! I shot more than one round (as I say at 15:51) and skipped the misses

      @@AirgunAlley Ok using the imperfect automatic translator I didn't get this information...sorry 🙂
      Do you have any idea of the difference in impact with the devastator?
      Have a nice day

    • @AirgunAlley
      @AirgunAlley  Год назад

      Hi Nico, haha no problem at all. I think the Devastator are stronger on impact, so better for hard surface. These are obviously good for penetration or for making a whole in fabric/clothes. In this video I compared various types, hope it helps 😊
