It's so cool seeing someone go over the classic Spider-Man comics in such fine detail. Top notch stuff. Can't wait to watch these videos over and over.
Thanks man. I wasn't sure how well I'm wording my thoughts. I wanna read all of ASM but I didn't know any places where I could share my thoughts so I figured I'd try to make my own book club for me to share my thoughts and for people in the future to share theirs.
One thing I appreciate Insomniac for doing is acknowledging Jameson’s role in Scorpion’s origin. It’s an oddity from this early experimental era when Lee and Ditko toyed with the idea of making him into an actual villain. Most modern interpretations eliminate this but Insomniac felt the need to at least mention it as a humorous aside. It doesn’t come up again and thanks to them killing off Scorpion, it most likely never will.
Even back in the 1960’s, depicting characters like that was risky as hell. You have to consider that Taxi Driver wasn’t released until the following decade in the midst of the auteur era of filmmaking and the novel Catcher in the rye was considered subversive literature. I guess socially alienated young male characters have always been a minefield to write.
I love this video cause not many people know that in spidermans earliest years, peter was a collosal jerk and even said comcerning stuff that a school shooter would say in their manifesto. We NEED to give the first Raimi movie more credit because that's where most modern renditions of peters origin comes from now. Raimi fixed so much from the debut comics. Peter instead of a misanthrope, is a genuine bullied outcast who has a crush on MJ. His final moments with uncle ben he argues with him, making his death more impactful. Instead of peter letting the burglar get away cause he's a selfish jerk, its cause he wanted to get back at the fight promoter for cheating him. Aunt May instead of being an overbearing annoyance, shes his guidance for when he needs an uplift. Raimi really made a permanent impact on the character and we dont praise the first movie enough for it. I still think Spiderman 1 is better than 2
Big credit should go to Bryan Michael Bendis and his Ultimate Spider-Man series, a lot of the things that are in the movies and are praised were in that series even before the movies
I wouldn't say "fixed". I think they're just different characterizations. I like the original Peter. He has a harder uphill battle with himself. He's not as likable, but he's more interesting to me for that.
It gets better, I think since issue #25/#30 until the end of Ditkos run is the best of that era. Peter grows a lot with Ditko, he even get a closure with the guilt of uncle ben.
Very weird to not start this retrospective with Amazing Fantasy #15. Especially when you start talking about how this run introduced iconic things like the costume and money issues. When Amazing Fantasy is where that began
I have been rereading my relatively meager collection of Spider-Man graphic novels (after the first 4 Masterworks as well as the third Epic Collection, the chronological order ends there but I have a couple more Epic Collections plus a few others), and honestly I loved these issues despite all the text. I personally enjoyed the first 12 issues more than most of 13-24 and above so far. Part of it was that the angst was just right, later issues felt too much like a soap opera at times.
Early Peter Parker is supposed to be an a hole/brat who grows and matures through being Spider-Man. Sure; a part of it was because Stan Lee didn’t know what Peter’s personality down yet… and yet I feel it enhances Peter’s maturity. He becomes less of a rage monster over time (which most adaptations take advantage of), he slowly stops seeing Flash as the worst thing possible and starts seeing him as a mere person who he could mess with, (who later Peter would even learn to befriend), but yeah… lots of Pete’s later character growth is a product of Stan not knowing Peter’s personality in early chapters.
please go through all this classic pre-2000 stuff I love it. I want to you to go over all the spiderman crossovers during this time with the f4 avengers x men and all the awesome old sipderman comics and realationships
I just can't agree with these "Too many words..." comments I hear from contemporary fans spoiled by sparsely written comics. I also used to wonder about the fans of the "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" books, but no longer, I salute them! BTW If you think Betty Brant was a shallow character then I wonder if you really read the first 10 issues after all? I will agree with one thing, ASM #9 is a personal "Grail" for me, too!
I personally prefer less dialogue in comics. It's definitely a preference thing. I never quite clicked with the 9-panel grid thing. I didn't even really care for it in Watchmen. I prefer later Ditko issues in storytelling. I find Betty to be a little boring. I don't think Ditko does quite enough to flesh her out. Ditko gives the characters roles and they stick to them. There's a routine to it and that's fine. It works for most part but Betty's a character I never connected with. I just find her role to be boring. I prefer Romita era Gwen and MJ. Early Ditko is a little weak, I think. Ditko gets better as the book goes on though. The art and the writing improves drastically. I felt like it took Ditko about a year to figure the book out. Once he does, it's nothing but great issues from there on out.
@@FinnSutoThe2nd I find the Marvel writing style (pioneered by Lee) highly engaging as opposed to the dryness of some of the other writers' work. Dry prose is a no no for me. But so, too, is a bunch of empty panels with perfunctory storytelling. That's the biggest thing misunderstood by manga imitators. I instantly fell in love with Betty Brant the first time I read those early stories. Dropping out of high school to get a job to help pay for her brother's gambling debts? Definitely not "boring'! Nice, chat.
It's so funny seeing MCU Spidey going "golly gee willikers, I hope Mr. Stark notices me!" in contrast to his Silver Age interactions with other superheroes.
Really cool video but saying that the plots for these early spider man issues are stupid is kind of dumb. Because I can say that about any spider man comics at the end of the day it’s all fiction.

Ditko's Parker is basically the kind of guy who would go on a shooting rampage, if he wasn't a superhero.

I have found a channel that I am prepared to BINGE Lets go! Loving the breakdowns.
Top tier underrated channel alert
I’ve Read Untold Tales of Spider-Man in between these issues.
Stan Lee wanted to make characters that were relatable with layers. Look at the fantastic four

I don't mind words but I find that a lot of dialogue is just characters unnecessarily describing what is illustrated.
20:51 peter parker should stay relatable. We get angry, we struggle with financial problems and girl trouble

I think they aimed a bit higher than 7 year olds with Spidey, probably more like 10 year olds
