You guys are the best podcast for Mandarin. Please do not lose hope. Keep coming up with more topics relating to daily life and China or taiwan, and you guys will keep growing.
Also ask your viewers at the end of each video to give you a thumbs up. 😊

I truly believe your audience will grow. You are the best Chinese RUclips educators around because your topics and conversations have depth, which viewers like myself appreciate. Perhaps you can rethink formats and edits, but the content and conversation is unique, there is no other platform for Chinese learning that is at your level of intellectual and moral depth, and it will definitely bring you success, even if it’s slower or not in the way you expect. Jia you!

You didn’t fail, you just evolved. You are not old, you got life experience. It has only been 2 years. Once you pass the 5 year mark, you will laugh about what you used to worry about. Keep posting. I am not even learning Chinese but I like listening to the three of you chatting and just look at the subtitles on occasion.

The thing about a channel like this is although the views at times may seem low, they are real engaged viewers, meaning in other channels with videos with 30k views most of the people probably clicked on it once and watched it for ten seconds, whereas here the subscribers watch many of the videos from beginning to end. It may not be the numbers you guys want but your content is incredibly valuable to a large group of people. I think this is the best podcast for learning Chinese on youtube currently

I remember when I first noticed your channel back in summer. It seems like a long time ago because of the progress I've made in Chinese, to a considerable degree because of you.
Back then, I would subscribe to any Chinese learning channel I could find that was still active. I would just watch a couple of videos from each channel to get a feeling of what was out there, to feel that there was a lot of material to make enough progress in the upcoming 6 months.
I didn't think much of your channel because I'm not a person who watches podcasts. Usually, I listen to audiobooks or watch videos that expand my knowledge. Also, my Chinese was rather limited so I didn't understand much and the beginning of the videos didn't feel very professional.
A few months later, my Chinese had grown to a level that, when I accidentally stumbled across one of your videos again, I could recognize 50% of the words with English subtitles.
I had a day off then, and I continued listening to three episodes, after which I felt that my listening had improved. It took a dozen more episodes before I started appreciating what you're doing.
There aren't actually that many alternatives to Dashu Mandarin that fill that gap between low intermediate and advanced. You really can't benefit from C-dramas if you're intermediate. Even now, when I can listen to you and some other native podcasts without looking at subtitles, I can't understand C-dramas to a degree that I find satisfactory.
The interaction between you is unique, and I will come back to your channel even if my level goes up to HSK9. In some of the blind box questions, you went deep into pretty sensitive topics and shared a lot of yourself. That's special. From the dozens of Chinese channels I've subscribed to, your channel is the only one I'm still watching regularly (well, and the two associated ones).
Subscriber numbers are just that - numbers. People often subscribe and then don't watch another video. If you need to look at a number, I'd rather suggest you look at your views-to-subscriber ratio. The biggest channel for learning Chinese has 30 times more subscribers than you, but most of their videos have just a couple of hundred views. Other successful channels that have 10 times more subscribers than you have a ratio of 10%, which is OK. But some of your recent videos have a ratio of up to 25%. By this metric, you've clearly not failed. But it's better not to look too much at numbers because no matter what metric you reach, you will always feel that it's not enough.
As an INFJ-A, I feel the urge to share other ideas and points of improvement, but I think I don't need to. Your channel is doing great. Just make sure you're enjoying what you're doing, and your audience will feel it.

Don’t lose heart please! Your videos are sooo incredibly helpful. I lost my mother to cancer last year and she was the only family member I spoke Mandarin to. Having found you made me feel like I have found someone my mother’s age (she was only in her 50s). I find it so comforting to hear your natural conversations like I would have with my mom. Happy new year Dashu!

Keep it up guys! and your individual channels. I often recommend you, and the original richard chinese language lesson streams. I think you standout in a world where everyone chases beginner content. The algorithm isn't fair and perhaps isn't currently set up to find an audience of Intermediate+ chinese learners, but when it does, or for some other sudden reason you should explode.

I watch Mandarin content from two channels, one being yours, for 1 hour a day. Your conversations are interesting and entertaining to me, but the main selling point is that you really hit the sweet spot, being quite advanced but still significantly more manageable than the channels for natives that I enjoy. In only a couple of months doing this, I already feel like I have to pause, rewind and look at the subtitles way less often.

Hi. I absolutely agree with your points on why your channel doesn’t grow, it’s true that the algorithm probably doesn’t see it as smth interesting because many people don’t understand what you say because the speed of the speech is too high, though your channel is still very helpful even for beginner learners like me, even though I don’t understand like 70%, I still listen to it as a background when I run errands or go somewhere.
But yeah, I guess if you sometimes made easier episodes where beginners and intermediate learners can understand, that would increase the views
Anyways, thanks for your content !

  • @anonymousduckling3820
    @anonymousduckling3820 29 дней назад +4

You guys are 100% not failing! You are supporting, entertaining, and teaching many students across the world! Perhaps some more really beginner content would help the channel grow, as I would say the vast majority of Chinese learners never get good enough to watch this and / or give up. Maybe more beginner content would allow you to capture that audience, similar to 'Lazy Chinese'

    • @anonymousduckling3820
      @anonymousduckling3820 29 дней назад

Or some content at levels similarly distributed as 'Dreaming Spanish', Ben shu may want to check this out as he speaks spanish and can see what I mean :)

Another Idea is more 'out and about' content, showing us around, narrating, as we then also get more visuals and things to see, while learning a bit about life in China

As a Chinese learner, I’ve noticed a big challenge when it comes to finding the right content. There’s an abundance of materials for beginners, and plenty for advanced learners, but there’s a noticeable gap for intermediate learners. I like to call this gap “the death valley of the intermediate level.”
I feel that Dashu Mandarin leans more towards advanced learner content with its natural, conversational speech. If you’re looking to reach a broader audience, maybe consider bridging this gap! For example, one of you could occasionally pretend to be less fluent in Chinese (putting yourselves in our shoes) and take some time to explain key terms or phrases-something like what FreeToLearnChinese does (maybe interview her sometime?). Just a thought! 😊
P.S. You joked about your appearance, and while I think you all look great, it seems like not much thought goes into your outfits or the background decor. When I think of China, I imagine the vibrant colors, shapes, and designs that represent its rich culture. As a viewer, I’d love to see those aspects reflected in your videos-it’s a visual medium, after all!
Your intro is funny, but I would love to see if you could harmonize a little more (a challenge for you 😄)
Wishing your channel all the best for 2025! I really appreciate the effort you put into creating valuable content. 加油!

The last few months have been pretty tough because of work. Hopefully, the new year will start a bit more relaxed, so I can find more time to watch your videos.
I have to watch them with additional subtitles because, as you mentioned, your level isn’t quite comprehensible input for me right now-but someday it will be! Then, I could even use my time sitting in the car to listen to them.
I love all three of you so much, truly! And I love your content-it’s always deep and meaningful!
And yes, I’ve been one of those people in recent months who forgot to leave comments because I watched your videos while doing things in the kitchen.
You haven’t failed. The RUclips algorithm just sucks. It often filters out your videos and shows tons of other channels instead.
The algorithm doesn’t want us to stick with one creator-it just wants to give us a dopamine kick with new channels. It’s so annoying because even though I use notifications, I often have to search to see if you’ve released something new.
But despite that, I truly believe you have one of the healthiest audiences out there!!!
I’ve set some (flexible) learning goals for 2025 because I’ve been feeling frustrated about my work situation and my time management-it hasn’t allowed me to improve as much as I’d like to. It’s not just frustration-it’s been kind of painful.
The past two weeks, I’ve watched some interesting videos featuring TJ Power and Ali Abdaal-they’ve helped me get back on track 💪🏻😁 .
Watching your videos always feels like coming home.
    Thank you!
    ❤️

The sad truth is, for Chinese learning RUclips channels people only watch click bait videos like:"the best way to learn Chinese, hsk 5 in 1 week". And never actually learn Chinese.
The people who actually learn will search their prefered type of content to watch and improve vocabulary.
I just dont know of there's a big demand for this type of content, and don't get me wrong, I enjoy this type of content and think it is helping me improve.

I especially love your episodes with guests, when they share their Chinese learning journey and life stories. ❤ You guys are great. 👍🏼 Please don’t stop your channel.
I listen to your Spotify podcast driving home after work everyday . Not a native speaker, your conversations about life, culture and the beautiful Chinese language has helped elevate my vocabulary, conversational ability besides improving my pronunciation . Thank you Dashu for your efforts researching very interesting, informative podcasts for us. Wish you success achieving your subscription goal this year.
Ps: Will appreciate If there is a bilingual translation on Spotify.

I think even if there are other resources for more advanced students, having content in mandarin on the "western" side of the internet is still a big advantage. I cannot make sense of bilibili and its culture for example, it's such an alien environment I'd rather stay on youtube. Even if I could understand the videos there. I'm also not really interested in Cdramas which eliminates a really big portion of Chinese media accesible to the west when it comes to my options. I enjoy the kind of laid-back content your podcast is though, I subscribed 👍

One thing I think that would greatly improve all your videos are the dual 汉字and english subtitles. The pinyin is maybe not always the best for intermediate to advanced since naturally english speakers will gravitate towards pinyin and not learn as effectively the 汉字. However if every video has dual captions it will make them watchable by every intermediate speaker instead of only the advanced. If they are only English it makes learning the hanzi harder and if they are only hanzi it makes understanding every word harder as well, I think dual setting is perfect

(I didnt watch the ep yet) You guys are literally the most interesting podcast for learners out there! I dont know how you do it, but you are able to talk about a range of topics using simple vocab. Other podcasts directed at learners are usually very boring, they stick to typical "learning" topics. When Im listening to you, I feel like Im simply in on a conversation between friends.
Tbh i DID wonder before, why you dont have more followers here. I have no idea why!!

Love your channel and really hope you continue. a couple of more general comments for you. I tend to agree that you are operating at advanced level chinese and therefore you're competing against a huge amount of native content whose primary purpose is to entertain. I am not sure a huge subscriber base is realistic as most chinese learners are beginners and only a fraction of chinese learners progress to higher levels. another channel i follow is mandarin corner which has 200k followers, the content is also advanced, but it probably focuses on more 'popular' themes and puts in a lot of time on interviewing, sub-titles etc. I tend to prefer your videos with a fourth person. I find talking over one another while on the one hand is more natural form of conversation and lively, but makes understanding what is said super challenging. I originally found your channel through a recommendation from another channel - are you doing enough to promote yourselves on other channels/platforms especially related to language learning (steve kaufmann?). are you on other platforms insta/tiktok?
