I’ve commented this before…you sound like a great husband and father. As the father of an autistic son myself I know how important it is to be there for them. I love your passion for vinyl but I love your passion for being a good person even more.

I had about 2,000 records and sold them almost all at once for financial reasons after I was married with 2 kids. Once they were gone, I looked at where they used to be and seeing that empty space broke my heart. So I slowly started building another collection after I got divorced and now my son goes record hunting with me. I passed the bug onto him. But sometimes you just do what you have to do. Thanks for your story Dillon.

The time you spend with your son record hunting is more important than the records themselves. Thanks for watching! 🙏

This isn’t about selling my record collection as such
But after my split with my Children’s Mother
I got rid of very sentimental items from my late family
It’s breaking my heart to this day ☹️
We do silly things when our minds are all over the place
I thing I got right is I never sold my Records
Only a few But I’ve re purchased them all now 👌🏻
      Anyways Thanks for sharing 👍🏻

I got into collecting records early after getting a job at 15 in a local jazz record shop. I sold my collection of rare jazz, soul and funk records when I was turned 21 to buy an apartment. That was the best thing I have ever done and now 26 years later I still own that spot and have a 3 times bigger collection. I would not hesitate to sell it again if I needed to. The hunt is the most fun part for me :)

My collection is almost 7,500 records. I'm at a stage in my life where I'm starting to think of selling most of my collection off. With the market really high right now it is just another push in that direction. Hard decisions ahead!

If you think you’ll regret don’t do it. When it feels right you know it’s time. I still love my records including the ones I sold. I’ve kept a few and I’ll probably buy others but priorities shift in life. It’s nice to know someone else will now have them and treasure them for a time.

I relocated in 2012 and had to sell all my vinyl. I just couldn't afford the shipping charge for all that vinyl. The good thing is that in 09 I started to get all that vinyl in a digital format and the ones that I could not find I burned the vinyl myself to disc. Now in 2022 I look at the cost of vinyl and I can't believe it but I have no regrets at all. I like the digital world for music for me it makes life easier.

my house was robbed twice back in the early 2000's, both times, my records survived... Both times I realised how lucky I was & how devastated I'd be if my records were gone.. While I've had numerous times I could have done with the money I'd invested in the records, every time I've managed to scrape by financially, & while I have sold many records over the years, (the 'crappy' ones) I've never ever sold them all... Money is so temporary, fleeting & can be gone so quickly, while the records are forever! Music is life! Thanks for sharing your experiences... Hopefully the collection is stronger than ever!

I'm not surprised the records weren't stolen. Last time I moved, my vinyl was the most cumbersome (and stressful) to move. So heavy! My collection has since quadrupled so I loathe the thought of ever moving again.

I lost my entire collection when I went to prison. Word on the street was a bunch of meth heads broke into my pad while I was fighting my case a wiped me out. Honestly I didn't care. I was fighting Life and had a new born daughter that was ripped away from me too soon. As the years went by I would think about the records I once owned and felt relieved that I didn't have to worry about them anymore. No more renting storage units or breaking my back when moving them around. But nowadays I'm free, I found my daughter and got bit by the record bug again. Slowly I'm getting all my gems back. My daughter joins me sometimes when I go record shopping.

One thing that I've always loved about you and your videos is your willingess to be truthful and straight foward, no matter how others might see it. I appreciate everything you've done and continue to do for the vinyl community and myself. There are those out there who put so much time, energy, and effort into video production, look and super ego to gain viewers and followers, etc. but you have always delivered the goods on a much more low-fi approach that is relateable to the masses. Thank you for sharing your stories, your life experiences, and the ups and downs of this crazy world with us. Love you brother! Billy-

Tifs your story! You’re spot on, it’s about priorities! We had a fire in our house 3 weeks ago (no vinyl was harmed😉) & main thing is we’re all safe. We’d lost many of our memories in a basement flood close to 20 years ago so had moved whatever was left into the room that had the fire. It breaks my heart as there’s family heirlooms, memories, our collections (hubbys 60s/70s comic collection), my research library (I’m an author/writer, some books over 200 years old) that might be gone forever but in the end it’s all “stuff”. We’re going thru the process of trying to salvage what we can but already decided to downsize in general- pictures work for memories, don’t need “stuff” (even tho I’m super sentimental). Bless you & your family, I’m sure it’s been difficult. I’m glad they’re talking more about autism as they’re able to find more out. I’m 62, recently found out I’m likely on the autistic spectrum, wild right? Cheers! 🧡🎸🎶⚡️

Dillon, you are my go to guy when it comes to vinyl record collection. I don’t have ambitions of opening a store, but I love hearing you talk about your collections, the hunt, the relationships you make. It’s inspiring and a lot of fun to see someone at the top of their game. I collect to listen not to own or sell. HOWEVER I do feel like I’m starting to change a bit and now am looking for better more expensive and “sellable” records. Still it’s all about my enjoyment. I started over the lockdown and now have over 700 albums and The hook is sunk deeeeep. Im 54 and retiring from teaching PE next year. Can’t wait to collect as a retiree. Omg goodbye pension. Haha. Love it. Keep it up.

I have mixed feelings about my collecting records habit. I feel a bit of shame because I think of all the time record shopping and money spent. It is time and money I could have spent doing something more "productive". Then I think that the time and money spent has saved me from becoming depressed and that it has eased my anxiety. So in a way record shopping has been my therapy. Another aspect is that looking back I realized that records I paid $9 or $15 are now worth $45 or even $150 and I go like "wow, great investment". So I don't know when and if I'll ever sell my collection. Sometimes I think I'll die and somebody will cash in. Damn! LOL

I think today we have the very nasty habit to consider everything as an investment.
I have about 1000 records fluctuating in value. There a few if I am to believe Discogs are worth a few hundred Euros in my case.
I still remember when people just gave away their vinyls for a few Euros per box.
Today, it selling again but the industry to take the business in hand and we already see that they are messing it up. There is already fatigue in some lp enthusiasts.
Used lp's also soared through the roof. Why sellers asking insane prices for really bad pressings or really worn out records.
Should we think that our kids, going to make beaucoup money? Nothing is more uncertain.
I would sell my records online, one at a time. It will take time and effort.
As long as we don't want to monetize our collections, we should just enjoy it for the music and nothing else. In a year, lp's can be out of fashion again. If the music industry, milk the cow too much. What they are known to do.

Collecting records, music in various formats as well as memorabilia are very very important to me and my well being as a hobby. A hobby that allows me time for myself that has kept me from allowing myself to get caught up in unhealthy habits. First and foremost is my family while having a hobby that I really enjoy (I cant explain the feeling and joy it brings) keeps me grounded and a better grounded individual to give back to my family, I hope this makes sense. A very good video this was, take care, keep on collecting, enjoy the music while remaining content because the more content you are the better person you will be to others around you, and really enjoy your channel.

Hey Dylan, that was a very touching and personal story you just shared with us, and I thank you for that. You are absolutely right on all fronts! Family is EVERYTHING!!! And compared to that, records are worthless! I have a decent sized collection that I have been building on since I was 9 or 10 years old. I am now 46, so that's a long time that some of these LPs have been with me. I would sell them all today if it meant taking care of my family, bar none! I hope that day never has to come, but that's a bridge to be crossed when it comes! Your story struck a nerve with me and I respect you very much for sharing it! Thanks so much, and all the best to you and yours!

Early last year, I moved from Detroit to Jacksonville. After some thought, I sold off my entire vinyl collection instead of moving it with me. They've had great success with selling all the rare stuff I had, so that makes me happy too.

30 years ago I gave up my record collection, but was lucky enough to get it all back recently. Here's my story: I left England in 1993 and moved to North Carolina. I left behind almost 200 records. Back then CDs were all the rage, so I repurchased many of my albums on CD in the US. On visits to England it seemed my records had disappeared. To be fair, my parents moved house, so I sadly made peace with them lost forever. Fast forward 30 years: my sister tells me she found my records in a cupboard at my parents’ house! So when my son and I visited the UK in February we packed lightly, leaving room for some records! We managed to bring back 100 records between 2 suitcases. And then my daughter visited the UK in July, and she brought back the remaining 100! So finally after over 30 years, my record collection and CD collection have been reunited and are being enjoyed as they should!

This is so incredibly relatable to me in the current time. Although my personal collection is only 300 records, I've been selling hundreds on discogs for the last year. I decided to stay home with my two toddler girls almost a year ago and it was an enormous sacrifice. At that same time I decided to start collecting to sell. It's made me realize a lot about myself and why I listen to music. It's also made me miss my own personal collection and actually sitting down and listening to it (I'm sure anyone who sells and collects understands this, lol) At a crossroads my friend, I appreciate the video!

Sold my collection before I got married.
Kept a crate of my most collectable as well.
Got back into collecting again a few years ago but thinking of selling my collection again.
Tired of the crazy prices and tired of the unscrupulous people who are selling "M, NM even VG+" and when I receive the item, it's trash. I have bought from some very nice honest people, but the hassle is getting to me.
Not many record stores around me so most of my purchases are online. I need someone I can trust to look at my collection.

Tbh this is probably my favorite video of yours. Your wife sounds amazing. To hear somebody who wants to do something like starting their own business trying to be responsible and hold themselves back to provide the best they can for their family seems to be a rare thing but even rarer is their partner/spouse who pushes them to pursue their full potential. Obviously I don’t know you or your wife but based on that story alone you both seem like amazing partners to each other and amazing parents. Despite having a much smaller collection than you at your various stages, it feels like it would be impossible for me to part with my records and then I would always find another way. Great story and yes, it’s hard to sell off a habit that you enjoy collecting, including records. As much as you enjoy the hobby of buying records, family comes first as always.
For me, nothing major is happening now. But when that time comes it’s going to be a very hard decision for me to sell records, even when I started collecting last year. Most to what I own are very cheap, except for some that I owned new. It’ll be tough but then again, anything precious isn’t worth having for long. You just gotta do what you have to do.

I kept all my records. Almost everyone I ever collected over the years. I purged a lot as a kid when I worked in a record store. I kept what I truly loved. I moved them all my life. I’m ready to purge more now that my wife and I have moved for the last time. My collection is not that big compared to most and I don’t have many that are extremely rare. I’m going through them now and cleaning them up and trying to get an inventory. They are like a time machine and the ones I had originally and never sold I can be very attached to, but It’s not as important as my family members to me. When we had to move I left a lot of everything I collect to charity. We had to move fast and I had to emotionally let go in order to get to our new place in life. I was very unhealthy during our move and had to trust and put my faith in god that it would all work out. I am doing better now and our new life here is just incredible. I’ve been watching your channel a while now and enjoy your stories. I think your stories have got a lot of people making their own channels and opening stores. I think you are loved by many maybe more than you know. Keep on keeping on! God bless you.

Great video! I have struggled in my life whether to keep my records during rough times and especially during moves. So far, so good... I've managed to lug my collection around with me from Japan to the US, then from the US to Poland, and now I am moving to France. (I have a collection in Canada that I had to leave behind, and I still don't know how I will reunite everything yet). This move is really a test of my resolve, but I figure as long as I have the will and the circumstances to lug them with me, I'll continue doing so. I think moving-related inconvenience is not a good excuse, but if I didn't take this opportunity BECAUSE I had records that I could't take with me, that would start being a problem.
As I get older, I'm starting to wonder at what point in my life will I stop wanting to acquire and start selling it off, though. My girlfriend and I just broke up, and the records are providing much-needed comfort, so now is certainly not the time. But in the future, maybe I'll be married, maybe I'll have kids, maybe the records won't be as important? I think every collector asks themselves these questions at some point.

I admire that, I kept my records through a divorce (in the middle of a 20 year hiatus of buying them), had a few stolen in that time, and recently have begun buying again like never before. I get to much enjoyment out of them to sell them all. Will I sell a few here and there? Sure. I recently got rid of a dozen or so, things I knew I would never listen to again, and traded them for some that I really wanted. Your videos are one of then things that actually got me buying vinyl again. Really reminded me how much I loved it. Thanks

It's the kind of thing that should be a no-brainer and I'm sure I'd do the same. Nowadays music is so easier to listen to it's not that you're losing the music anyway - honestly I quite often find it more convenient to listen to stuff online rather than pulling out the record / cd anyway.
All the best to your wife 🙏

What you speak about is so true across the entire spectrum of collecting things. Each category is important to us as individuals as tokens to times in the past. Those items take us back to good or bad experiences and are like bookmarks in our lives. Outside of that, they have value to others similarly and they will garner money depending on the demand. No matter what, they excite, comfort and amplify the joys we find in life. Thanks for doing this video.

I was in that boat in the 1990s when I lost my business and needed to earn money so I started selling my records on a market I fully understand your reasoning and I had a 4-year-old son with Asperger's syndrome and brand new baby at the time. Funnily enough, I'm just putting my second collection up for sale and I'm going to be doing a video about why I'm selling this collection in a few days!

As someone on the spectrum I want to wish Noble and your family a happy Autism Awareness Month! As far as people asking, "What do I do?" in regards to someone with ASD I say, "Treat us with kindness." That's probably a good rule in general for treating any human being. Patience also helps.

It's painful, but has to be done - once I can finally bite the bullet and start the process. However, I still have to await delivery of the new Rammstein album (the 2-disc clear vinyl version) . . .

Well, NOW is the time to sell. The bubble will inevitably burst cuz it has to...what goes up, must come down. But the only to really make money on them is to sell them off piece by piece online which is time consuming and annoying when you factor dealing with the post-office buyers nickel and diming you on "condition." Selling in bulk to another collector or a shopkeeper is quick and easy but guarantees taking at least a 20-30% hit in terms of the overall value.

I loved collecting vinyl in the early 1980's as a kid when Sam Goody had the letter system for pricing, e.g. J is $8.99, K is 9.99. For so many years, unlike other things I collected, like baseball cards or coins, vinyl never experienced the valuation craze until the last few years. Regardless of them not being worth much at the time, I thoroughly enjoyed them and don't regret purchasing what I did. Definitely do understand how the purchase of a record brings you back to a time and place; quite nostalgic! Certainly, understand how things do change as I've since parted with most of the things I collected over the years, keeping only a few key items. Most important I feel is you've enjoyed the journey along the way. I think after all, it's the pursuit that makes collecting fun!

Your records appreciated during this time while in the past most collectors couldn't get much for their records/hard work. When things went out of print, they once upon a time got discounted.
For me, I decided not to have a family early on. I never wanted kids and music has become the quest of my life which I collect on cd only. Music is really the only link I have with my fellow man. I've worked retail for a long time and see first hand, the hangups and limitations people have. When I get home, I want to get away from people and their vices. I can't stand small talk and have to excuse myself if the conversation doesn't become about something of specific interest within say 5 mintues. I can't swallow gambling, alcohol, religion, spirituality, gossip, and unchecked activism.

I remember back in 2010 when I lost my job. I had to sell a few things. A fellow came over and bought some some from my collection. I would say about 15 or 20 for about 100 dollars. I didn’t show him my favorites. I’ve always played vinyl over the years except for a period of time when CDs ruled. I would say I’ve got about 500 to 600 albums. Lately I’ve been trading some in at the local record stores for credit usually in return for a new remastered copy of a favorite artist. The sound is incredible on these new ones. Though some records have a bit of sentimental value I prefer to put them in the hands of someone who will play them often. I feel the same about a few of my guitars that I’ve sold over the years. If I find myself neglecting them it’s better to find them a new home. Funny, just when I feel I’m at the point where I think I have enough to listen to- something else comes along. One thing that bothers me is that so much now is simply repackaged with maybe a different color vinyl. I guess there’s a market - some folks feel that they have to have everything by their favorites. I’m not one of them. For example, I love Hendrix(fellow lefty) but I don’t need to have 50 versions of Purple Haze. Really enjoy your videos.

One of my close friends in years past was a serious record collector. He was worried that he wouldn't have enough money to retire, so he decided to sell his entire collection - he had 7000 records. With the type of collection he had, he was able to have Chad Kassem fly in from Kansas, and Chad bought the entire collection for $28K. Well, it was a very serious collection, even back in 2006.
Of course, if you are serious record collector, you never stop. About 10 years later, my buddy had 10,000. He is a real record hound, always finding fantastic stuff at low prices.

A lot of the struggles we face actually come from not following our passions. I wasted years because I wasn't running my own business, and my wife also pushed me to get back into following that passion. I'd rather be struggling in life doing what I love instead of struggling in life doing what I hate.
