I haven't bought from Discogs or ebay for a long time. Too many bad experiences with describing the state of records. People, go to flea markets, record fairs or best of all, to the Record Store near you. This is how these shops survive and the Record Store experience is priceless, because you meet like-minded people. So "Save and Support your local Record Store". Record Stores are Culture !!! 🇩🇪

@HALF MT It is nothing to say against buying online, but she told about her bad experiences. My Plädoyer is to buy in Record Stores to secure their existence. In Germany we never had an exit stop during the pandemic. My two favorite record stores were open and you could buy via Click & Collect and then pick it up in front of the door. With this I support my record store even during the pandemic.

I think Discogs is a good resource for finding out about records. Many dealers(!)on here, though and some dealers will claim to carry new stock they do not physically possess. Then you are in a chain.Chains can hurt.

I’m a comic book collector and I’ve never had half the trouble with comic dealers as I’ve had with record dealers. Care and honesty really does lack with many sellers, but don’t get me wrong there are some decent sellers out there but they are few and far between.

I got a € 50 note in a record sleeve one day. I prefer buying my CDs from a retailer. A lot of the 70s prog is still available. I also like to buy through bandcamp, where you directly can support an artist.

I've had great luck with Discogs with very little negative experiences. Any issues I've had were quickly corrected in one way or another. I know that's not always the case with some sellers. I always read the most recent feedback before I buy from anyone. Sorry to hear of your difficulties.

My worst experience was when I was young and naive and was coerced by a seller into making the payment outside of Discogs in order to get a better deal. I was scammed out of about $85 Canadian which was very frustrating, especially since I was really excited to get the records (Camel - Mirage, Deep Purple - Fireball and Eloy - Floating). At least I learned a valuable lesson lol

Wow and I new on discogs and thanks for the warning bc for someone new, it’s too many options and easy to make mistakes or get scammed. It’s already hard to understand and it feels like you’re on your own on discogs like Craigslist and I’m not sure if they get involved of something goes wrong. So many rules each seller has and I’ve already seen the ones that says only pay with the invoice and not pay through the discogs pay method bc they won’t see the paid notice until much later vs direct. So that sounds reasonable . So yeah, lots to watch out for, even when there’s no scam and my first purchase i didn’t know you’re lock in to the sale until after pushing the pay button, even if you haven’t completed you credit card info. So what happens if you change your mind and I do see notices tgat says non paid item will be cancelled after so many days.
I think haveingnoptuonsbarengreat, but I think they need to keep it more simple and have less choices and focus more on the records. Bc most put generic for covers but when I look at the stupid photos, I see the company cover. Which shouldn’t be called generic bc generic mean a plain replacement cover. So they should give you the appropriate choices and simplified the record terms for newbies bc we don’t know what they mean. Or have 3 different site option beginner, mid, super pro bc it can’t be frustrating. And that’s not even the scammed part.

Wow, those are some crazy sellers! Fortunately I've never had an issue with anybody on discogs. On ebay however... that's a different story! I know it's not completely foolproof but I always check the sellers' feedback before buying or bidding. And it's always a good idea to look at the feedback a little bit closer. Even if somebody has thousands of feedbacks and they have 99.7 percent positive feedback check the negative feedbacks and if they have a lot of negative feedbacks within the last month I usually avoid them(as long as they seem warranted). I know it's tough though when somebody has a rare item listed though and it's super hard to find. The temptation is great! I rarely take chances on questionable sellers.

Honestly, not as bad a set of experiences as I'd imagined. Some of the chaff that I plow through on the discogs forums makes me plain out doubt the sanity of some buyers/sellers. The key, of course, is what percentage are problems. You should have a laugh (with Dad) and read through the thread "Post ridiculously graded items here". You couldn't make the stuff up. Maybe some day I'll get up the nerve to start selling -could use the cash flow, but not the grief. Looking forward to SWD tomorrow, as always. Haven't seen the cat?

This is good to know. I've checked out Discogs before, but I never bought or sold anything from there. I checked it out mainly through vinyl TikTok. My local record store also sells there, which is nice because I never had a bad experience with Bananas (that's the name of the record store in my area because I live in St. Petersburg, Florida). I usually just prefer buying my records used from a record store or thrift them from a used bookstore. I will say this, the last few records I bought were new and from Target. I'm not ashamed to admit that 😂.

It's usually bad grading. Discogs have a decent grading system that seems to be different to eBay. Some sellers haven't a clue and it may be they weren't around in the great days of vinyl when everyone bought records. Sending wrong pressings is annoying as Discogs has a great system for identifying first pressings (or year of pressing) something eBay doesn't have. It's not hard to identify the pressing using Discogs.

Thanks for another interesting post Niamh. The Discogs and eBay systems are not the issue, as usual it's some of the people using them. Also when money is involved in any transaction it has the potential to poison proceedings. My only experience of Discogs involved a grading issue. Yes, grading is always subjective but when an album is described as EX/EX I would assume the cover would come as one piece not in kit form with the back and front in separate pieces. And with very minimal or no ring wear. Also, in my book audible scratches on the album disqualify it from being graded as excellent. Luckily I've found the vast majority of sellers and buyers to be reasonable human beings!

Discogs has its moments, but I was surprised how many records aren't listed. Also, I've had very back luck with vinyl purchases. Not only were they not VG, they were the worst condition records I've ever encountered - such that I didn't know it was possible to allow records to get into such terrible condition. By contrast I've bought three LPs via eBay that were listed as in Good condition. They were NM. Go figure.

  • @Michael64425

Hi Niamh, A very good subject to tackle! On one hand discogs is great looking for your vinyl records, different editions, dates etc.
The problem and I haven't used discogs that much, is the site seems to create ridiculous prices, and the number one problem is sellers grading vinyl LPs as Near mint as an example, on a 40/50 Yr old record.
That's in my opinion about 95% impossible, one of the reasons love or hate them that CDs replaced vinyl as the number one product is because of deterioration of sound quality etc etc.
Keep up the great channel content, and agree with your sentiments the other nights stream, Don't let it become a Job👍

Discogs should come down hard on sellers who don't communicate or more importantly grade their records wrong. I recently bought a record that was marked as Near Mint, when it arrived, one look and I knew it wasn't Near Mint, it was even worse when I cleaned and played it. The cover was also badly torn. It puts me off buying from discogs and eBay. I usually go into second hand record shops or buy brand new.

I find Discogs much better than Ebay. The worst examples have been improper packaging. A Tame Impala EP was sent in just a large envelope and you can imagine the warping - it wasn't worth sending back, so I framed it. The other problems have involved overstating the Media rating. It it's old and looks good, but hasn't been tested, it's probably not NM! But by far the majority of my dealings have been great, and it's always nice to get an album that is better than rated! Because I'm in Australia, some sellers have refunded all or part of the purchase if something is wrong, rather than me sending it back. Finally, having my collection on their database helps me keep track of the collection and its value for insurance purposes.

Two weeks is really not ages. When shipping packages, things happen. I've had a package take six weeks from UK to the USA when normally no more then about 14-21 days. As long as there is a tracking number and you can kinda know yeah, it was shipped and on the way, you just have to wait. You can always offer the seller more money and have it shipped faster. Its very, VERY difficult to get UPS or any shipper to re-route the package especially when it has not even reached the receiver's area yet. They were charged to deliver the package and that pretty much is what they are going to do. Otherwise its too chaotic for them. The problem I have with Discogs is getting variants other than what I pay for. Sometimes I want a particular pressing and the seller is not careful and lists his item for sale under the wrong variant. And when I get it its not the record I ordered. I ordered the Sacramento pressing and you sent me the Nashville pressing. This happens WAY way way to often on Discogs.

I was hoping that some mention might be made of when quality of record doesn't match grading description. For instance how a record plays is important rather than if it looks visually clean. A record may have been played on a bad system, or with a worn or damaged stylus/needle. What is acceptable?

  • @jimmycampbell78

The only bad experiences I have had with buying records (always CDs) are from Amazon/third party Amazon sellers/Royal Mail - a combination of all three messing up deliveries, basically. Non-deliveries when Royal Mail said they delivered. Broken jewel case damage. A CD that wouldn't read.
No issues on Discogs, although I have only made a few buys. I've made about 10 purchases and the sellers have all been great.

2:59 ok i have one better
Discogs sends me an email saying could you provide feedback for your latest order.
i'm thinking how would i do that when 2 orders are in transit. i look to see what the order is for, well needless to say over 20 days "payment pending" i msg them asking for an update. nothing. an email sent in paypal maybe they will see that. now i have paypal trying to contact them. during all of this i look at signs of a shady seller. nothing strange. however his last sale was like 5 years ago and no recent orders for them either. but in the reviews for albums discussion tab he commented on something around 3 or 4 months ago. now since this had been a crazy year i came up with 2 thoughts. he no longer deals on discogs, or the worst he caught the virus and you can only guess what i am thinking with that. i just hope the guy is alright. that is my only issue in over 20 years of buying online.

People are always crappy and cheap bastards when it comes to customs fees.
2 1/2 weeks from the wherever to the UK is not a long time. With the current world situation it takes forever. And, it's out of the sellers hands if the carriers take more time. You needed to be more patient in that case. Did you ever get that Genesis box set from that seller?

I have to tell I have good experiences with Discogs, even with russian partners (as I ordered some special vinyl records made only for Russia as well). The worst experiences I have with Ebay. I ordered a vinyl record once (released originally by WEA France in the 80s) to my collection what was described as a record in a top quality, and received a record what was very warped. No return, for sure. On Discogs everything was coming OK and without any problem.

Buy from sellers with more than 98percent. The more sales the better. Always ask for pictures. Never buy from people with mint everything or albums in top condition at really low prices , it's more than likely BS. Ask some questions . If not all the info is in the details. If you don't get a response within a week move on . I Have bought a lot from over seas and 99 percent have been what I expected. Some sellers don't want to answer questions , if not move on.. always cover your self so your less likely to be disappointed. Have fun😁 collecting .

It’s not a problem exclusive to Discogs. I have had the same sort of experience with large online retailers. Placed an order, a week later one item goes out of stock on the website. Order status is “preparing”. Order not dispatched. Email inquiry leads to a promise to look into it. Three weeks later no progress. Happened twice out of four orders with this retailer (based in Warwickshire - beware!).

  • @CBT5777

Discogs doesn't let you cancel invoices. That's preposterous! Sellers can ignore your request for cancelation and let you go past the grace period and that will trigger negative feedback as non-paying buyer.

I bought a record on Discogs last week and I was send the wrong album. What annoyed me was that it was by the same artist but not the right album, like they just looked at the name of the artist and it did not occur to them that they could have more than one album. The seller sorted it out though and was helpful.
I sell on ebay and I have never had a single negative or neutral feedback in the three or four years I've been selling records and CDs. I'm sure I get less sales by undergrading everything but I don't care because I don't want the hassle. Mint or near mint I put EX, Faint scratching and light wear I put VG. Any scratches you can feel at all I put G+ Also I put at least 5 photos of the actual record & sleeve. To me there is no such thing as NM, I don't use that cursed grading ever lol.

I have also had vinyl from the US. It can be nightmare with customs and paying the import duty..Captain Beyond's classic first album with 3D cover which cost me $24 had to pay $23 on top of the 27 for the album but the seller was nice guy he then refunded me $10 as he felt sorry for me after the 6 weeks it was stuck in the US postal system...What lovely man!

My experience with Discogs buying has been quite good but selling is a different story. Make sure to do your homework try only using PayPal as they will hold money til both parties are satisfied. I lost 2 vertigo original albums to a buyer abroad. and had to refund money . And the shipping policy thing drove me nuts . Back to just buying now ✌️

I used to buy a lot of vinyl on ebay but I gave up. I got tired of people describing something they found at the dump as being Near Mint. I stick to new stuff now, but even that's not without problems. Record pressing is a dying art - I've had supposedly audiophile LPs costing a small fortune that sounded appalling.

I feel the scam is that we would've forgotten about it especially if we're the user whom just signed up to purchase one vinyl only, it's easy to forget to do the return policy if very busy.
As vinyl lovers we'll be scammed eventually I guess. .

I am currently dealing with a shady seller on Discogs. Took them 11 days to ship my record after they took my money- only after I reported them to Discogs for not replying to my inquiries. They say they shipped it, but did not give me a tracking number. I keep asking for a tracking number, and no response. Now it's been another 3 weeks, no tracking number, no record in the mail, and no response. I reported them to Discogs again. We shall see. Definitely giving them a bad review and never using them again, obviously.

My worst experience had to be when I tried to buy the Layla 40th Anniversary Ultimate Boxset. This guy in Turkey had a really good price on a complete one, so I jumped on it. I didn't notice until I'd agreed to buy it that he only took bank transfers. I'd already committed, so I went ahead and did it, even though my brain was telling me, "no".
After a month it hadn't arrived, he says it's on its way. After two months he says it's on its way. After three months he ghosts me. I contact discogs who eventually suspends his acct.
Oddly enough, he contacts me maybe another month later with a sob story about how discogs is being mean to him and has ruined his business. After some back and forth, he eventually refunds my money and I removed the negative review (we'd agreed). I don't think he was up and running again though, cuz I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one he'd left hanging.

I were expecting some total horror stories today, seems you were lucky anyway, i wont tell you my very worst experiences, but i can gladly coun them on one hand, though if i count stories such as you, i havea whole bag of thoughts and experiences, heheheehhe. I have been selling for seven years, 127 positive and 2 neutral (also 3 negatve which discogs removed due to the buyer didnt read my info about my product) and i got 100% seller score. As a buyer ive got 98.5 and bought 338 albums, i have had 3 very serious problems overall, besides these are the usual overgrading (sweden is worstt, UK the second worst, but UK usually refund a small amount......) What you should check before buying is : is it a personal seller (usually a very good sign) their score (even if they got 100% positive, doesnt mean they are trustworthy) and i am always a little careful when they have sold over 100000 albums and their score is 98 % or so, ALWAYS check the individual reviews sellers got, that usually tells you if you should order or not!

Well, they've sorted out one of my issues with them. There is no longer a track on a compilation of Christian music in my discography; it's been credited to my namesake who actually made it. So, I forgive them, for forgiveness is devine.

I don't sell on discog, I only buy at this time.
I started purchasing from discogs after March 23rd 2020 I have 303 purchases
100% positives as a buyer, I haven't given a bad review as of yet. I Only purchase from people who have a 98% positive rate an if they sold less than 100 items it needs to be at a 100%, before I purchase anything from them, I also I look at the reviews to see what it States. Definitely customer service is a great thing I also look at their grading of Vinyl and cover condition in perceptions of the purchaser.
I have encountered some bad experiences where I got the wrong pressing, I tend to buy a lot of (white label promos) American LP's, which are listed and they send me a stock copy, most of the time they tell me to keep it and they give me a refund. If they want me to send it back I tell them they need to pay for postage because their the ones who sent me the wrong item it wasn't me buying it wrong or my expectations of their grading system. I still give them a positive rating and when I write the feedback I put that situation was handled in a professional way.
People make mistakes. For me its about what the outcome is. To me this might be their livelihood and I don't want to ruin their livelihood because of my Personal selfish expectations I don't know what there going through. I put myself in their place Before I put a negative comment.
And when I do have a positive feedback I write this in the positive feedback section:
    Quick service to buyer.
    Fast service to Post Office.
Vinal and cover condition as stated utilising discogs and goldmine standards of grading.
    I recommend the seller !
When is the next ceptional seller this is what I write.
Thank you for bringing up a great subject looking forward to seeing your next videos.
    Mahalo from Ed in Hawaii

eBay is less Dodgy than Discogs with records because it has immediate buyer protections plus the sellers cannot leave you retaliatory feedback. By the way Incense is bad for your lungs.

Sound rotten experiences, I've never had anything as quite as bad as that. To be fair, generally Discogs and Ebay are good. I rarely have a bad experience. Serious. You might get the occasional dodgy experience - better to read all small print and be cautious. Some people are just very poor at communicating, or incompetent, when it should be their duty or job. Some lesser known sellers of new items can be poor, they tend to advertise new items when they don't have the stock eg. Cadiz comes to mind. If you buy a lot then you're going to come across problems from time to time.

Ok, I'm gonna go off a bit, so, fair warning, y'all...I spend a lot of time in Discogs...a LOT. I buy a fairly high amount of 1st pressings because I've been trying to replace my MASSIVE OG collection that was, go figure, held hostage by an soon to be ex boyfriend who thought I'd stay if In exchange for my own record collection. Lol great plan, guy. So yea, I lost a lot there. I dunno wtf is up with Discogs lately, but it has grown really shady when it comes to OG vinyl. I have bought 16 1st pressings in Discogs so far this year. Sadly, 13 of them were not the copy they were listed as. Thats an insane number ! In many cases I can see their error in the dead wax numbers : the series of numbers of the 1st press were there, so after identifying them, the seller stopped searching the deadwax for any more numbers. Had they continued on they would've seen more numbers etched in there showing that what they're holding is not a 1st pressing. Usually, I get a full refund with apologies. But, what I'm finding are these sorts of sellers that have really amazing, rare, records for sale, and a lot of them - obvious collectors in the know. These are the sellers who don't want to refund me. Who want to argue about how" 1st pressings are all relative, really. How do we REALLY know?" Just total pricks. I will end up going around & around with them, recieving these insanely long, convoluted, explanations that really explain nothing at all. In the end they will offer me $10 or $15 refund. I always laugh at that, and say no, but they won't budge. As it stands now, I've ended up keeping 6 records that I never ordered, a d recieved a pittance of a refund. I really don't trust the community anymore, and am generally bummed about the whole thing.
