Agree with Aelya, the guest streams are fun -- even while In Exile! Prob also easier for you to setup/run vs setting up mikes, cameras, lights, and then having to switch cameras every 4 seconds for 3 hours. :)

I think Derik said that if you watched DnD movie and wanted to recreate that in your session, using 5e system won't help you, because it just mechanically does not allow you to do stuff movie characters did. In a same vein, I don't think Valor _truly_ lets you do the Shonen tropes via its mechanics. Case in point: Shonen characters are famous for pulling out a brand new OP technique in a middle of a huge boss fight. They either retroactively shown to train it in secret or just spontaneously unlocked it during this exact fight. System where you have to meticulously minmax each of your new techniques between sessions kinda doesn't look like letting you get that powerspike _during_ the combat, does it now?

Well, yeah, the way a lot of shonen resolve combat (especially _bad_ shonen) would be what we in TTRPGs call "an asspull." It's a player going, "I cast Create Water inside their lungs!"
With _good_ shonen, it's still not a tactical challenge, but reminiscent of how a mystery author reveals who the killer is - they lay down some ground rules, let you think you understand them and could easily predict outcomes, and then twist the rules in a way you haven't considered, making you go, "Ah, of course, makes perfect sense, how haven't I realized that before?"
In a TTRPG, a GM doing that is just stepping on player agency; a player doing that is being a weasel. I'm not sure it can be done well at all, to be honest.

@@ikaemos Well, Shonen sometimes do it in flashback manner as Forged in the dark games allow. The question is how far would GM let them to go with it. Probably some kind of arbitrary meta-currency could determine the scope of such effect. Something like "spend 2 BS points, completely ignore letal damage, come up with a narrative explanation how would your character achieve that". Mechanically you just nulified the attack, but you can flavor it however you want and in a right setting that could be half the fun.

The game actually lets you save your TP to spend later and make a Technique or expand/edit on a previous one mid combat if you want. Pretty sure the same thing goes for skill points

@@ArmoredAnathema that's one way to do it. Although it probably requires fair amount of system knowledge to be able to conjure one properly on the fly. Although it's a nice gamist challenge to be able to discern what kind of ability would be useful in this particular tactical scenario and create an optimal answer on the spot. Also you can pull off an actual "secret training" trope (aka "save it for nationals") where player would properly design new ability before session but roleplay it in a way where character won't show it until that specific clutch moment in a boss fight. Come to think of it, that sounds pretty close to how Derik described daily powers in 4e lol.

Catching up to the vod. I love dungeon meshi.
The valor part is really smart. You get Valor points for acting like you're an anime character.
hex is superior and im tired of looking at square grids
bob makes a great point. Anime battles take forever so it makes sense that it is played with a grid and resource management LOL
"anime characters dont depressurize like little B" that is true, i've watched Baki.

If you think about it, 5e/pf2e (real-time) combat is very faithful to the length of dragonball z combats.
