"Up the Junction" is kinda like Americans used to say "Up the Creek Without a Paddle.'" It is basically slang for "in trouble". The song also is a reference to Clapham Junction in London. This song reached #2 in the UK. They still do this in their live sets. They are awesome live. Seen them several times.

Sort of. Up the Junction was a Wednesday Play shown on the BBC in 1963. It captured a slice of working class life that had not been seen on film before and was seen as 'revolutionary'. Directed by Ken Loach who is still working today. There's also a slight implication that someone is pregnant too with the phrase which is the main story of the song and film (like "bun in the oven", "up the junction"). Not necessarily a reference to Clapham Junction but Squeeze were from Deptford/Blackheath and Clapham is just nearish could easily be a place someone may have a girlfriend. Oddly my wife started out in Clapham and I came from Brixton. Thats why I know a lot about this song. Also bought it on lavender vinyl as a 10yo in 1978 never knowing how much the story would be like my life. Never seen them live though - would love to.

As a Londoner in his 50's this takes me right back to what it was like in the 1970's in the UK. Love squeeze and love your reaction videos. It was also an early video so while it looks like it was just filmed in a kitchen (and probably was); people didn't really know how to make videos back then and the budget simply wasn't there for many small bands. This really does take me back to what it was like back then.
Back then Britain was a very different place to now. Most people rented a house and couples just starting out on a married life would make do with what they could afford. That was what my parents did. They struggled to afford things in a cheap flat in London. Men's social life revolved around the pub, drinking and gambling. The world is so different now and I am so grateful to have been able to experience the old and new. I have my own kids and their life is luxury compared to just 40 or 50 years ago. Britain was in a terrible state back then.
He never thought he was good enough for her when they met. Clapham is an area in London. It's well known for the railway junction (partly why the song mentions being up the junction which can refer to being out of luck or even pregnant) and also the park called Clapham Common which is referred to in the song.
But they got together and bought or probably rented a small basement flat.
The room wasn't very nice (kind of smelly) and probably more than they could afford so they stayed at home watching the TV (telly).
They were deeply in love and spent most of their time together("just kissing") and didn't go to the pub because they just wanted to be with each other (the Railway Arms is a fairly common type of pub name).
He probably didn't have many skills but got a job somehow (probably low wage, unskilled). He started the job on Monday so had a bath on Sunday. Back then it was quite normal to have a bath once a week. We generally didn't have a shower so we had baths. As a kid I remember we had a bath on Sunday night. I shared the water with my brother.
He worked a long day to buy her things (11 hours to buy the girl some flowers).
She wanted children so saw a doctor to make sure everything was good her side and had come off birth control.
He worked extra hours the next few months through winter and managed to save some money each week (put away a tenner - £10)
She could feel the kicks of a baby inside of her. So they had to sell the TV because money was tight. Then all they had were evenings together by the fire (probably a one or bar electric fire if my childhood was anything to go by).
One day at 4:50 hr took her quickly ("nifty" - it means fast to us Brits) to the hospital to give birth.
He had a beautiful daughter who looked just like her mother.
Two years later their relationship had broken up. She had left him and taken their daughter because alcohol and gambling had become more important to him than his wife and daughter ("my drinking became a proper stinging" and "the devil came and took me from bar to street to bookie" - bookie is a bookmaker where you place bets on horse races, football matches, etc).
She's now had an affair and taken their daughter.
He's now alone in the kitchen and wants to get back with his wife and daughter. But back then men most men didn't apologise to their wives. ("Begging's not my business" - I remember my mother telling me my dad wouldn't push the pram/pushchair because men didn;t do that sort of thing back then. He wanted her to make the first move to reconcile but she obviously wouldn't.
It's not clear whether the daughter was left with him or his wife took her. But back then it was usual for the mother to take the child. It's unlikely the daughter would have been left with the father. He was probably left on his own.

The reason that it sounds like a story is that it is a story - its precis of a book called Up the Junction. Once on a school trip to London I stayed with the author, I can't recall if her children were at the same school as me. I remember her home with deep fondness, she was incredibly kind to me at a time when I was suffering greatly. I especially remember hanging out in the back sitting room watching a little white Sony trinitron.

    I love this song.
I always feel that this is an English equivalent to Springsteen’s Thunder Road.
Where Springsteen’s song is a great American story of boy meets girl and they follow their dream of love and escaping the small town homes, cinematic in its imagery from the very start as a screen door slams.
Squeeze’s song is true kitchen sink reality. Love doesn’t always run smooth and dreams don’t always have a happy ending. English in its gritty ness and straight talking. It says “OK Here’s how things are really likely to work out”
In terms of song construction, is it a coincidence that neither Thunder Road or Up The Junction has a chorus and both play out instrumentally?
Two great songs telling the same boy meets girl story.

A great modern ballad. This is from Britain's post-punk / New Wave era when a host of great songwriters and bands wrote fantastic catchy tunes with intelligent lyrics. This song evokes that 1960's UK era of gritty TV dramas which were pushing forward with a new approach, with stories about everyday working class lives with natural acting and a documentary style to the filming. There was a 1963 book with the same title, which was first made into a TV drama in 1965, and then a film in 1968. The song's narrative is not related to the dramas other than they deal with working class life. Nicknamed 'Kitchen sink dramas', programmes like 'Cathy, come home' were a revelation to middle and upper class viewers previously oblivious to the realities of the tough lives of poorer people. Squeeze captured that same feeling musically with this urban tale of lost love.

Yeah - she leaves taking their daughter with her so he's now on his own. Difford/ Tilbrook are probably the UK's greatest songwriting partnership after Lennon & McCartney and Jagger and Richards. At their rawest and most punk check out "Cool for Cats" - a song that makes a lot more sense if you are familiar with (1) Top 70s UK gritty cop show "The Sweeney" and (2) East End (of London) slang. "Labelled with Love" is almost pure country. "Pulling Mussels (from a shell) is them at their most melodic.

The reference to the Room Being Smelly is because back then the Houses in London and most City’s I’d imagine we’re pretty rundown this would have been before central heating , I Remember from experience , that there were lots of problems with damp , this would have been even worse if you were in the Basement as the song says and it’s typical of a place a starting out couple would rent as 90% of houses in London had basements and they had that smell of Damp and that is the Genius of GlennTilbrook and Chris Diffords writing in this song, their ability to explain an unfolding story of Happiness to Despair from start to finish in such vivid imagery in about 3 minutes is Nothing short true Genius … It is a complete one of a kind song ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌞❤️🌞

A great song this and the lyrics really hit home. The great thing is if you analyse the song is it tells of a relationship from meet up, to moving in together, to parenthood, to break up, and alcoholism and despair...in a little over 3 minutes! 😳 Chris Difford is a lyrical genius.

"Pulling Mussels from a Shell." That was probably their biggest hit in the U.S., at least on early 80's alternative radio. "Black Coffee in Bed" and "Tempted" were on pretty constant rotation on MTV back in the day . . .

Always had particular significance for me as I’m from Clapham, and we used to use the phrase “ up the junction” all the time...as in “ what are you doing Saturday ? “ “ I’m going up the junction “ all the shops were there , Arding & Hobbs , Woolworths , Marks and Sparks and just up the way Northcote road Market....good times.
India , I recommend the specials , a track called ghost town is a great place to start , Brixton riots kicking off around the time of that track, it’s the soundtrack of urban unrest and mass youth unemployment...

Hi India, a little info on the song. Squeeze were evoking the UK 1960s film "Up The Junction" which covered post war Britain and the UK's issues of poverty, unemployment and 'kitchen sink' dramas (eg, working class peoples' mundane lives) Squeeze evoked a typical working class English lifestyle, the telly (tv) pubs (bars) and the weekend revelries. Hope this helps.

Please, Squeeze! "Tempted" is a song you may have heard, but also the ones cited below - and very early "Cool for Cats" - different singer... and I love the "octave vocals" - not harmony, exactly, but people singing the same note just an octave apart -- one of the things I loved most about Squeeze (besides the musical talent on every instrument) - was the balance they achieved between vocals, guitars, keyboards, bass -- absolutely brilliant! Thanks so much for taking a listen to them...! Last note: if you can get lyrics, it will help a lot to understand! (although even for old me, some of the British terms are unfamiliar... )

My family are from the area around Clapham Junction in London. This song references that location, but also the 1960's classic film which is also called, Up The Junction. It is a powerful evocation of London in the 1960's, and highly recommended viewing.
