Squeeze - Up The Junction Reaction

- In this video we're checking out Squeeze. They had, what I would say is, a great song (Hourglass) in the late 80's, and we're really excited to see what else they're about. Enjoy!

"The devil came and took me, from bar to street to bookie..." Amazing lyrics.
One of my all time favourite lyrics 👍
yep he took me too
Been there myself 😬
One of the greatest pop songs ever written, about 5 years of someone's life condensed into 4 minutes.
The lyrics are a masterpiece of concise storytelling. So much harder when everything has to rhyme.
@@mesolithicman164 'no more nights nappies smelly' is a tenuous line!!! I give them a free pass though as I love the song!
@@annother3350
You're right, it's not a brilliant line, but it does get the idea across. I would say this is their masterpiece song. A 3 minute condensation-ish of the 60s movie Up the Junction with Dennis Waterman and Suzy Kendall.
@@mesolithicman164 I love that film!! Especially the soundtrack
Agreed.
Excellent reaction - I've always looked at this song as the story of my early life and listen to it often. In 1979, I was pregnant with school love's baby (BF/GF since 1974) Our gorgeous daughter was born in May 1980... the rest... long story, it just didn't work out. In 1983, I met a soldier, we married in 1985. Our daughter is now a grown woman in her early 40s, and we now all have two grandchildren... I would never look on our daughter as a mistake. We all live happily in a blended family. #truelove
Lovely story ☺️
blended family...FFS
Thanks for sharing, Kari.
I learned all the lyrics of this song in one night a long time ago, I can still recite them now almost thirty years later
Thank you very much for reviewing my suggestion and I’m glad you enjoyed it.
One of the greatest 45s EVER.
@3:49 their faces!: Welp that escalated quickly... *blink blink* 😆
My go to Squeeze tracks are ‘Cat On A Wall’, ‘Goodbye Girl’ and the aforementioned ‘Take Me I’m Your’s’, all great!!
A great reaction yet again. Another couple of tracks to check out by Squeeze are, "Take Me I'm Yours', and 'Labelled With Love'. There was a '60s film called 'Up The Junction' which this is loosely based on.
Those are two great songs, IMO. Especially, 'Labelled With Love'.
@@HidingFromFate Labelled with Love, is one of my favourite songs by any artist, such great song writing.
Goodness, Labeled With Love is a MUST listen. It’s squeeze at their very very best.
@@anthonyprime They've done a reaction to it now, have a look through their channel.
Pulling Mussles
Such lovely genuine people.
“Alone here in the kitchen, I feel there’s something missing…I’m up the junction.”
I love that song. It's a sad song really. Brings back great memories though. Thank you for reviewing.
The resolution from the Middle 8 is magical musically. Great story telling too.
Are you talking about that key change in the middle of the song?
Brilliant.
There is a 1968 film of the same name and the story may be the same. The junction is Clapham Junction, a station in South London where very many tracks converge.
My fave band ever! Please give "Labelled With Love" a go big country song
My comment will be late, but I saw Sqeeze at a small club in London around 1978. Their keyvoard player Jools Holland had his own show at BBC.
I love this song especially when, as I used to live around where these places are, Clapham Common and Clapham Junction.
Another banger a great post punk band there one of my wife’s favorite bands only because there from Depford south east London around where she is originally from they are a great band I’m loving the post punk and sub culture music you are reacting to keep it up
Up The Junction is a play on it's all gone wrong, but also The Girl from Clapham, Clapham is the busiest Junction Railway Station in the UK. Double meaning "Up the Junction"!
Bear in mind this song has no chorus and the title are the last words of the song; amazing song writing and extremely poignant and familiar to some of us..
For those that might not know up the junction refers to clapham junction a large railway junction in London. The windy common is reference to clapham common in the same area of course.
What about Railway Arms (we're missing)?
@@Jungla694 I'd assume that's a bar at the railway junction for railway workers.
Songwriters Chris Difford and Glenn Tillbrook, throughout their whole body of work, showed themselves worthy heirs to Ray Davies and Paul Weller as chroniclers of working-class English life in song. The music of Squeeze is a rich and rewarding rabbit hole to go down.
They were possibly heirs to Ray Davies; as for Paul Weller, he was a contemporary of theirs.
@@jonathancole833 Nope. Being a contemporary of Ray Davies would mean Weller and The Jam were around about the same age and recording at the same time .
@@scottandrewbrass1931 I meant Weller was a contemporary of Difford and Tillbrook.
this was my band as a teenager in the uk in the 80s
Great voices, good taste, nice reactions.
Great video squeeze are great storytellers I like labelled with love
So good! So sad ❤! Great video avalible on utube as well [ recorded in their kitchen] take care.
Loving the irony of pausing just when it sounds like a cute story, only for things to take a downturn as he tells of how is alcohol and gambling addictions leave him on the street. Showing my ag here, but somewhere I have the 45'sl of this and "Cool for Cats" on pink/ purple vinyl which will be bound to fetch a few bob.
We loved that happy accident too. I was just trying to pause between bars.
"musically it was very nice to listen to" LOLOL How deep!
Certainly one of the peppiest sad songs ever
Their best song for me was "Pulling mussels from their shell"
Amazing reaction my friends!!....In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just It was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coach, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 and 5 years have passed since then, but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those reactors who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you..It is a more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....ruclips.net/video/bDX3FhmyNac/видео.html
Hey Haniers this is one my age old friends favorite bands. I never saw any variety in thier style
Saw Squeeze twice in 79 and 83. Another Nail For My Heart from Argybargy is anther great song.
Kitchen Sink pop music - great stuff.
Love your reactions guys. Cynthia has that whole Shelley Duval vulnerable sexy thing going on. You guys are so cute together, the way you keep looking at each other, just for unspoken confirmation. Very wholesome and warm. Keep it up guys.
Brilliant 👏
Squeeze was ridiculously good.
So freakin’ good.
Just found her chan. This song has a great story. Good you listened to others. Here's a random one for you ... Lou reed : goodnight ladies. I say this cause so many think Lou reed is just walk on the wild side.
Hi Folks, Yep another great choice! Difford & Tilbrook are/were supremely talented songwriters who were favourably compared to Lennon/McCartney at the height of their success, Another great British band writing about the minutiae of British working-class surburban life alongside compatriots such as The Kinks, The Jam etc it seems a peculiarly British thing I mean you wouldn't hear say an American band writing lyrics that include smelly nappies or graffiti on buses or being beaten up as part of growing up because to them it wouldn't be a cool thing to write about and yet these bands have and do enjoy a lasting impact on British culture and beyond so the message is probably write about what you know about and keep it authentic anyway I'm starting to waffle so will stop now! Cheers Jim, Surrey, UK X
Nice 🎉🎉🎉
It had to go south as "up the junction" means, ballixed, screwed, effed up etc.
Great song from a great band, well done 👍
Up crap creek. It's a double meaning though if they lived near Clapham Junction
Cool for Cats not done shocking their other No2 hit in the UK!!!!!!!
jools holland was in the band
I really like how you paused and reflected directly before the twist
Yeah. That was pure luck. We were just trying to pause between 2 measures.
Jools Holland the pianist from Squeeze has been hosting a live music show for years now and his new year show has become almost traditional now apart from the covid years, he also tours with his big band constantly.
I've seen a few episodes of Jools Holland on RUclips way back. Great show.
Jools is a wanker for not doing Bands Reunited!
Yeah, and he spoils all the guests' music by playing honky-tonk piano over everything.
Following for listening to proper British anthems not just the famous ones :)
brilliant song/ group good story but they were such good underated songwriters in my opinion
Another great choice guys - Messrs Difford and Tilbrook were a mean lyrics/music pairing, and highly underrated. I'd recommend "Labelled with Love" or "Take me I'm yours", or if you want something slightly less well known try "Tempted" or "Black Coffee in Bed".
We know 'Tempted'. Great song. Really soulful.
The way they looked at each other @ 3:49..... BRO
i have already quit drinking for this piece
Heartbreaking 💔
An amazing track, so many people must have gone through this.
I'm going to see the squeeze this winter in Liverpool..bit of trivia..1 of only 3 songs where the title.is only sung once and is is the final words of the song
Yeah, I enjoyed that.
There was an advert for playstation or something like that, where a baby literally gets shot out of a vagina and flies through the sky, all the while morphing into a child, and then a teenager... getting swiftly older and old until, towards the end of the aerial journey, they finally turn into a pensioner and smash into a grave in the ground.
This song very much reminds me of that. It all happens so fast!!! 😨 Great song, though 😁
Took a twist on you, didn't it. 😄
Try their songs "Pulling Mussels From The Shell", "Black Coffee In Bed", and "Another Nail In My Heart".
This is a rare hit that doesn't have a chorus, it's just one story.
And the title is the in the last line
@@stevecalvert5212 It is so, can't think of any other hit where the first time you hear the title of the song is on the last line.
I still know all the words after all these years, learned them in one night too.
@@BaronVonGreenback1882 made of stone by the stone roses - the last line "are you all alone are you made of stone"
@@lolollololol2758 oh wow, good shout, love the Stone Roses, so them live at Spike Island many moons ago, I'm from Manchester.
ROXY MUSIC….Virginia plain
Right at the end of the song
I've watched numerous videos, and maybe I'm wrong, maybe you look at him in simply love, but it seems you look at your man to see what he is thinking, before you make your own mind up, and after watching so many videos, I just want to say, you'r both amazing beautiful people and you just go for it girl, because it doesnt matter if he was a DJ or whatever, you opinion is just as important as his - love to the both of you x
We are deeply in love. I (Cynthia) always express my own opinions, Chris would have it no other way.
@@hanierfamily thank you, and yes your love for each other shines through, alongside your enthusiasm for music - both good reasons to watch your videos. Take care and thanks from Northumberland, England's border territory with Scotland ...
Now this is a band....cool for cats...💕🤣
We really enjoy that song. I'm still surprised it's the same band.
Cool for cats is more up beat
"It's kind of cute actually." Just wait.
Brian May's bassist writes to you.
"Cool for Cats" was a big song? I wonder where. Maybe in Great Britain only.
Muchmusic used to play 'Cool For Cats' semi-regularly when the channel first started. In fact, I'd say Muchmusic and a show called 'The New Music' helped introduce us to all sorts of styles that wouldn't have charted here.
@@hanierfamily ok, thanks 👍
_Tight band?_
Err... Whaddya expect - they're called 'Squeeze'
lol
Okay I,m Going to keep placing suggestions"Sparks album "Kimono my house" the title is a paraphrase
From the late 50, 60 era song "Come onto my house" I,m not sure who did the song but their is no rendition of the song on the album it ,s strictly artistic parody attraction to draw attention to the album. it,s thier
signature album and all songs are incredibly different then anything you,ve heard they are the lyrically
more impressive than Queen with a satirical quality but they can rock with any band at the time.
first 2 songs suggested are "Hasta manana monsieur" the 2nd is"This town aint big enough for
the both of us"
We don't mind. We hope to get to all of them eventually. We will write each request down. We will hopefully have a database soon to help organize our suggestions . We DO intend to hit every suggestion we get.
@@hanierfamily appreciate that form of operation gives every one a shot
incase you were wondering what the tern up the junction means, its you're scewed
We got the gist at the end of the song. Brilliant.
Squeeze makes me sweat too!
Stay single
british version of rap
480th :)
An every day story of poor working class young people ,
Yeah cute song about alcoholism and loss.
Up the junction means you really screwed up in Brit slang.
One of the saddest songs ever written.
Lyrically. But, it sounds so upbeat.
@@hanierfamily Agreed, I'm not sure if you guys have done Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Come Up And See Me? It has a kind of similar joyous upbeat melody, with bitter, snarling lyrics.
Squeeze were a really underrated band, i think the writing partnership of Difford and Tilbrook is right up there with Jagger/Richards etc, in UK terms at least.
We don't know that band. We will add it to our suggestions. Thanks. We welcome any suggestions.
One of their other songs, Labelled With Love, is perhaps even sadder.
YOU probably understood about 10% of the words because it is in British slang. Next time, put up and effing word video if you can't put up a video of them playing the song
The worst pause ever.
