- Team Red Bull is the most dominant team in all of racing right now with Max Verstappen in Formula 1. What is interesting though is their tenure in NASCAR which reached nowhere near the heights of their F1 team. Even with minimal success in NASCAR they still did have a presence that is remembered to this day. So, what happened? Well that is what we will look at today. So, why did Red Bull fail in NASCAR?

If either Dodge returns or if Honda is serious about joining NASCAR then yes, especially when they can't get a full field of cars outside of Daytona 500

Red Bull as a sponsor with SVG for Trackhouse is totally possible since he was affiliated with them in Supercars. Kasey Kahne's 2011 win at Phoenix is the 1st thing I think of with Red Bull Racing in NASCAR.
I fully expect to see the Red Bull logo several times on whatever SVG is driving during the 24 season. SVG is in the Red Bull stable, and a Trackhouse/PitBull relationship with Red Bull seems very natural, heck I won’t be surprised if Red Bull sponsors a PitBull tour in the next year or two

S1ap gave an intriguing theory over part of the reason. Despite the unspoken rules among manufacturers with regards to teams running different cars in different series, namely they don't care what they do in different series, one of Red Bull's sponsors in F1 towards end of their time in NASCAR was Infiniti, the Nissan equivalent to what Lexus is to Toyota, their luxury brand in other words, and they didn't see it that way. Nissan were apparently unhappy with Red Bull using Toyotas in NASCAR and told team managers that if they wanted to be sponsored, then they needed to change that. As Red Bull were losing money in their NASCAR venture, it made the decision easier, but still, it's strange if it's true
I am inclined to believe this both because politics like this is common in the F1 paddock and, it did seem strange that they would pull the plug just as things were beginning to turn around. Then literally right after they left NASCAR they started a dominant run in F1 that more or less continues to this day. Pretty sure Infiniti had something to do with that. Interestingly, this could have led to Nissan joining NASCAR but I guess someone in Japan saw things differently
How are they not losing money in F1? It is literally 3-4 times the money per season of NASCAR.
@@ethanweeter2732Over $1 billion prize money is divided between F1 teams based on standings. It's been estimated that Red Bull received a $140 million payout. Haas (last place) got about $60 million.
F1 is much more generous to the teams than NASCAR. It also explains why the teams don't want to see Andretti on the grid. More teams - less money for each team.
Plus the f1 team was using Renault as an engine manufacturer back then and Nissan was in a weird halfway merger with Renault where both companies owned stakes in each other and shared a CEO in Carlos Ghosn

Red Bull actually started in the Cup Series with Dodge for a short time in 2006.
Bill Elliott was the first driver but dnq in his one attempt.

I've always liked the 4 number font that Red Bull used in 2011.
One of the most intriguing and from a personal standpoint, one of the best looking race cars period.
They failed because their drivers didn’t go anywhere. You had Brian Vickers who was looking for a fresh start after his HMS tenure was a bust and Scott Speed who was a bust in every sense of the word. Vickers did have a comeback year in 2009 getting a win and making the chase and speed well did nothing.
They also started with a young AJ Allmendinger who wasn't ready yet. In 2007 the 83 and 84 car DNQd lots of races with all the new teams that season.

One thing that people may not know about Red Bull when it comes to racing is that in addition to NASCAR, F1 & rallying, they also took part in the IRL with Eddie Cheever Racing from 2002-2005. Red Bull & Eddie Cheever had a partnership where in exchange for helping the company find & mentor potential American drivers for a future F1 team (that would arrive in 2005), they would sponsor his cars & provide funding for the team. However like in NASCAR, Red Bull did not do that well in the IRL despite having the likes of Patrick Carpentier, Ed Carpenter & Alex Barron drive for them alongside Cheever with no wins & only 3 podiums during their time in the series. For those wondering why Red Bull did not get involved with CART/Champ Car during that time it is because Red Bull executives viewed that series as too unstable especially since CART went bankrupt in 2003. It is unlikely that they will get involved in Indycar again given the very uncertain future of that series & because of the success they are having in F1.

That was a pretty underrated season. Yeah, Kahne didn’t make the Chase but if luck had gone his way, he could’ve had 3, maybe 4 wins that year.

They didn’t know what they needed to do to be successful in NASCAR Cup Series. They should have just been a partner in an already established team

I can see Red Bull on Shane van Gisbergen it was on his car down under so why not we already have a Monster car.
I heard that it was actually Nissan/Infiniti that made them quit NASCAR due to them being the title sponsor for Red Bull Racing in F1 and they didn’t like the fact that they were running Toyotas in NASCAR and thus gave an ultimatum to ether pull out of NASCAR and leave Toyota or they will jump ship from Red Bull F1.
Nope, not even close to being plausable sorry. The Nissan/ Infinity naming rights was simply a corporate decision by Renault (who manufactured the F1 engines) to share the marketing costs for a couple of years with their alliance partners at Nissan. Their F1 decisions are purely independant as the owners of their 2 F1 teams.
You only need to look at Red Bull's long and continuous significant sponsorships of the VW (and now Toyota) Dakar Teams, Holden / Chev in Supercars (for 10 years now), Honda in MotoGP, KTM in MotoGP just to name a few.
They'll be back in NASCAR when the climate is right and they get a good return on investment....with SVG in 2025 would be my bet

I remember the Red Bulls cars leading tons of laps and sometimes dominating 1.5 mile and 2 mile tracks. They should have won more based on their raw speed but weird things would happen to keep them from victory. One shown on this video was the wheel coming off at Charlotte, that’s just one example. The rumor was the Nissan didn’t like their affiliation with Toyota but feels like there was more than just that.
I still have my Team Red Bull hat from 2007 I got at Talladega. Even got to party with Vickers and the crew on Friday night on the main drag for the fall race. Had a great time and got a free case of Red Bull out of it (we hid the case of Monster we had in the camper). I was a big fan of Red Bull anyways. In rallying, I was a Travis Pastrana Subaru fan, and of course he was a Red Bull sponsored athlete. I was a Sebastian Vettel fan back then, then became a Danny Ric fan, which I’ve always been, but even more so now that he’s back with Alpha Tauri/Racing Bulls/Red Bull. Basically, Im a Red Bull F1 fan, but I was super excited to see them in NASCAR, and instantly became a fan of Vickers. I thought their cars were cool, too. The rear wheels were red to match the Bull on the side of the car, and make it look like the bulls rear legs were the wheels spinning.
Red Bull isn't even in Nascar, and still one of their drivers won a race in 2023. and although its unlikely for them to come back with a team, they may continue to sponsor SVG with his transition to Nascar.
I think SVG could bring them back as partner since they sponsored him in Supercars. However, a full on major stake in the sport I think isn’t really likely. To me the current state of the sport and business model they use isn’t conducive to major companies or brands coming in and building a team like it once was. The most succcessful brand to do it was furniture row racing with Martin Truex Jr, and his partnership with his crew chief Cole Pearn, and the teams ties with Toyota ironically. After they won a title, and the next year began talks of closing that showed me that it would be tough for any major company to do something like that again. I mean you have the businessmen like Matt Kaulig, and succcessful celebrities like Michael Jordan who sport a clothing line that has a major role in their teams, but it’s very rare anymore for it to happen. Usually people who own teams are relatively successful businessmen who have deep pockets, and lots of partnerships with brands that make owning a team possible. It just isn’t the same business model where specific brands could buy big shares in nascar teams, and use the team name to sport their brand logo for publicity.
It isn't really a personal sponsor, rather a team(not team in the nascar sense of each car being a team or whatever) sponsor as Triple 8 is known as Redbull Ampol Racing
However it wouldn't be surprising to see them follow him on a smaller scale
So I don't think we will see a redbull livery car but we could very well see a rb logo somewhere on the car
I totaly forgot redbul was in nascar for a bit. i was watching a video yesterday about honda possibly trying to get into nascar, and they were showing the 83 redbul car racing. I also somehow missed that redbul was also on the #4 car for some time.
I think it is odd NASCAR did not take Honda. Just as good if not better fit for them. Especially when Honda is big in Ohio and states that are good for NASCAR.
Never forget that Infiniti aka Nissan is the real reason they pulled out of NASCAR. Rather than either start a Nissan cup series effort or live and let live, Nissan used Red Bull's F1 team as leverage to get them to pull the plug. now that Monster Energy is no longer a major sponsor, I can't wait for their eventual team up with Trackhouse... and probably SHR or another Ford team after 2026.

I liked Red Bull's NASCAR team. The cars looked amazing and Brian Vickers was often fast. They're both kind of a "What If?" for me. What if Vickers had never had his health issues, and what if Red Bull had stuck to NASCAR for the long haul?
RedBull could probably return to NASCAR with Ford since Ford will be RedBull's engine supplier for the 2026 season, but the chances are slim.
The cost of sponsoring Formula 1 vs one or two NASCAR rides is no comparison.
Redbull could sponsor 1/2 the cup cars vs one Formula 1 car and Red Bull would save money, just not have world wide exposure.
Not true anymore with the cost cap. And Red Bull gets sponsors of their own in F1, Oracle alone pays something ridiculous like 50mil a year. If Red Bull sponsors a NASCAR team THEY pay.

Given the level of motorsports sponsorship Red Bull has outside of North America and had in America in the 00s their complete absence of any sponsorship in televised American motorsports in the form of NASCAR, IndyCar and IMSA sponsorships is noticeable. Even without owning a team it's bizarre to not see one or two in each of those series when one looks at how prolific they are in Europe, Asia, Australia and South America.
I think Red Bull came into the sport way too late if they came into the sport in 2003 maybe it would've been better. You can also say they came into the sport way too early Toyota struggled from 2007 to 2009 an if they started in 2015 they would been decent.
Team RedBull might have failed in nascar but at least the looked good on track lol🔥
fun fact: gunther steiner (current team principal in haas) actualy was one the part of redbull nascar team back in 2006-2008 as a technical director

Although the team failed their cars always looked good. I liked the grey redbull car with red rims, but all the red bull cars looked good.... before they were wrecked.
@TheIceberg my question would be would NASCAR have allowed Red Bull to stay in the the sport, especially when Monster became the title sponsor, because I remember a time when they tried to push AT&T out when they were sponsoring Jeff Burton when Nextel/Sprint was the title sponsor. Because I know if Monster Energy was the Title Sponsor they wouldn’t allow any Red Bull Signage anywhere on the track property. And they have done that to another Sponsor at a tractor because it was the competitor of the Title Sponsor of the Race.
I actually can see the opposite happening if Red Bull got their act together and started riffing out wins like their F1 team. They tend to throw big money behind sports they like, such as rallycross, drifting, soapbox, off road truck racing, and that's just what I remember. We could have had the Red Bull NASCAR Cup Series instead of the Monster Energy Cup Series. Which hilariously would have kneecapped Kurt Busch's return to prominence as Monster basically bankrolled his entire rise back up the ranks

Hear me out. Putting my “what if” hat on.
What if: Red Bull stayed in NASCAR. I personally believe that they would have partnered or bought Michael Waltrip Racing and would’ve had a 4 car team after the whole spin gate debacle. This sets up a time where RBR would become the modern day Trackhouse. Quite possibly would have helped drag NASCAR out of it 2010s slump.
I think partially why Red Bull left is that their driver lineup wasn’t solid enough. They needed to have signed a significant free agent to help bolster the lineup better.
Red Bull should have hired an elite veteran driver who was in their late 20s to early 30s. AJ was a rookie then. They should have hired Mark Martin even maybe.
They probably wanted younger drivers to appeal to their brand. Hurt on track results though. They tried to use Mike Skinner to fill in some races.
The funny thing is that team red bull also had 2 wheels with black rims on the front of their cars and 2 wheels with red rims on the back of their cars for some reason in nascar
Red Bull also manufactured every part of the car they could. If they were not forced to buy it, they didn’t. Even the simple stuff. NASCAR is expensive but they made it way more expensive than it had to be.

The only good highlight in NASCAR, that Scott Speed has done was his wreck avoidance at Texas. But, that's it.
I already detest how Red Bull owns, what, 5 football clubs? Leipzig, Salzburg, Bragantino, New York... I don't know if they have two in Brazil or if they ever decided to restart the Africa one... I already hate that, so the fact they also own two F1 teams at the same time, and are the main organizer behind many X-Games style competitions is way too much. I'm glad they're not _also_ on nascar.

Honda wasn't there yet. It was Nissan, through their Infiniti brand, which used to sponsor Red Bull in F1

Also Red Bull was extremely impatient with AJ Allmendinger and didn't try to help him develop his stock car experience.
When Chip Gannasi gave Allmendinger Xfinity races near the end of 2007 that's when he started to better on the cup side.
Red Bull should've gone to Braun Racing who was the top Toyota team in Xfinity in 2007 and got them to give Allmendinger Xfinity races from the start of the 2007 season

Anyone hear anything about SHR and new sponsors they may have added? Lost some heavy hitters with Busch, Smithfield and Hunt Brothers. They are going to need United Rentals, High Point, Mahindra all add races this year. Really surprised Hunt Brothers left for Penske. They are going to need more than Haas Automation on the 10 and 41 this year.

Because when they came in the top 35 in cars owners points were guaranteed starting positions in every race.
So Red Bull.was always behind the 8 ball for every race.
They'd have been fine if they came in during 2005, since most of the non top-35 teams were pretty much garbage. 2007 just had more decent cars than available spots.

This video really just brought to the forefront the poor management of nascar when it was at its height. I know not everyone follows wrestling but it reminds me of WCW in the late 90s. On fire, the most popular wrestling company in the world. Their buisness model was built in a way that they would only be profitable if buisness never went down, and that is a terrible way to manage a company that is build on popularity. Similar to wrestling, NASCAR is at one of it's least popular points in history and like wrestling it's still dealing with the affects of poor money management at it's height. An over simplification of both obviously, but the falls of 2 most popular southern sports from 90s are similar in a lot of ways
Wait so we’re not going to talk about Guthner Steiner involvement in the team? Or the fact they wanted to run the team like a F1 team? Also if they came into the sport later they would have had to deal w/ bumping heads w/ the title sponsor of the cup series Monster Energy. Don’t get me wrong I wish them & a lot of other older sponsor jump back into the series. Also would love if NASCAR & FIA got on the same page. Maybe work a deal to have drivers earn super license points by racing in the series or even run same weekend at the same track.
Without Dietrich Matteschitz, RB not coming back to Nascar. Nascar demographics are too old for any brand opportunity. This is why soda brands and candy sponsors are mostly gone. Plus everyone knows Redbull already.
If Honda comes to NASCAR, I wouldn't be surprised if Reb Bull is their #1 team.
I think Tony might jump to them possibly. Though he is not a huge foreign manufacturer fan in NASCAR, I do not believe.

Red Bull is partnering with Ford for the 2026 regulation change, so it wouldn't be out of the question for Red Bull to make a comeback with Ford as the manufacturer. You could buy out Stewart Haas for the base. Sure, there's bound to be growing pains as the team transitions, but it'd be better for NASCAR as a whole. Plus, Ford tends to be the most stable manufacturer as far as testing their teams the same.
About the only components from Ford that will make its way to the RBPT (Red Bull Power Trains) engine in 2026 will be a blue oval badge. They just want Ford's money.
Maybe they'll do a separate deal and stick a frickin Mustang badge on the Alpha Tauri (or whatever the team is called by then) to convince Americans that a Mustang has F1 Technology. Now that I can see happening
I remember this being one of the first big breaking nascar news stories I saw on Twitter. Was shocked and sad to see them leaving. Also was worried at the time because if a company like Red Bull pulled out of the sport, then it was possible other big companies, especially ones in the sport for a long time and with big time drivers, could do that eventually. And sad to say it became true
but the did trade in NASCAR for multiple F1 championships and Max V pile drove the competition in the 23 f1 year

The team running Toyota's was one of the main issues, Honda was not pleased that team owner Dietrich Mateschitz was running Toyota's which is the main competitor of the Japanese manufacturer and threatened to cease the involvement with Red Bull F1 plus the sister team Le Toro Roso.
Toyota was the the problem back them.
