Max Verstappen Onboard | F1 Old Spa-Francorchamps (1966)

- Here's an F1 2020 onboard lap around the old Spa-Francorchamps layout with Max Verstappen in his Red Bull RB16 challenger.
The old Spa layout was used between 1939-1978, and was 14.1km long. Going around this track with a modern F1 car means that it's mostly flat out throughout the majority of the circuit, with very very few turns and corners through the whole circuit. It was interesting to see the differences compared to the modern layout, one of them being the Eau Rouge and Raidillon corners which required me brake more compared to the modern layout.

edward furrow about 200 mph
Only 4 times the car braked:
-Eau Rouge (unlike today's flatout Eau Rouge).
-Les Combes (yep, that left-hander _was_ Les Combes).
-Approaching La Source (after 2 minutes of flaoutness and a couple of non-throttling kinks).
-La Source itself (only proper heavy-brake).
This circuit's run through the towns was crazily fast and long!!!
@@5furrow More or less in the third braking zone (approaching La Source). Consider also that La Source was further from when it sits today
@LeGM yep, but the topspeed gained (334kmh), if my maths sucks thats over 210-220 mph
Old spa woud definitely make the engine overheating.
Bahrain 2020 would like to speak to you outside.
No, the engine gets enough air to cool down at a constant 300+, and they can use a mexico like chassis for better cooling if need be
WEC would Love old spa
@@jorritvanderkooi939 but Mercedes will definitely have a problem if they are behind any car or two, they either get a slip stream and suffer overheating or escape the slip stream and be slow.
I think the tires would suffer too, for being at such high speeds for long periods of time, probably there would be tons of blistering and more frequent stops
Race car drivers of the 60s were fearless holy crap
To get the full 60s experience you'd have to play this video at .5 playing speed
They dont even have fancy helmet and tires too
@@insertname8889 0,75 I'd say. Late 60s F1 cars weren't slow 😯
[[Insert Name]] because of the less drag, f1 cars would have been hitting almost the same vmax. A porsche 917 topped out at 220mph in the late 60s. Modern F1 cars aren't designed for top speed in the same way that race cars used to be.
@@insertname8889 this is a simulation of how it was before. Far scarier and surely not 50% of todays' speed (take into account the intro and outro timings)

F1s of the '60s were basically tinfoil-made bathtubs suspended on four motorbike wheels with a 500 HPs. engine running on high octane, hyperflammable petrol strapped in their back, bottlecaps for brakes and no wings (and no downforce), let alone robotised gearbox or electronic driving aids, to help you. And they raced on this kind of track, such as this old SPA which makes the Nordschleife looking like a marble track in comparison.
Driving in Formula 1 in those years basically required complete indifference to end your career whether dead or alive... Surviving was a success in itself.
What a comment
Good old Green Hell, famously easy to drive
@@REGSTER1000 Not easy at all, but old SPA was probably even more of a deathtrap; the 1960 Belgian Grand Prix even has been the only occasion in which two drivers have been killed during the same race day (not counting the 1994 San Marino GP, with Ratzenberger losing his Life during practice, and Senna during the race).
@@TenorCantusFirmus I agree, but I would rather choose Paul Ricard for the marbles comparison then something so brutal and beautifull to watch like the Nordschleife :D
@@REGSTER1000 It just was an hyperbole, I wanted to emphasize how fearsome looked, and actually was old SPA.
at one point watching this, I thought we were never gonna make it back to the starting line.
Freaking highway hypnosis on an F1 track
Only track with 9 DRS zones.
Ferrari would be 3 laps down by the end of the 1st lap this year . . .
And Williams at least 10 laps on last year car
Haas would actually spend some time on track.
Then they'd crash.
Mercedes would loose 2 laps each straight, due to "dirty air".
The breaking for that final corner would be horrendous having gone basically a minute without touching the breaks!
Somehow, drivers where capable of breaking in the last corner back in the day. Even AMG Rot Sau, a big robust heavy ass car was capable to complete the 1971 24hrs of Spa. Well, those guys knew how to do it.
@@danilaodatunagem7193 It's not about the drivers, it's about the cars. Modern F1 brakes don't really bite until they reach 350°C.
@@aumpauskar4653 just have to start braking early to get it to temp
@@istoleurfaceha3527 Just feather the brake for about 10 second before the hairpin and they'll be up to temp.

It's flat out for a modern formula 1 car, in the 60s they would definitely had to lift and brake in most of these corners. Remember, no downforce back then

Before 1971 spa was in fact the fastest track on the f1 calendar which is not surprising considering the amount of long straights and fast turns this track had
The great Jim Clark hated spa yet he still dominated at this daunting iconic race track by winning 4 years in a row from 1962-1965

Love the technology of our cars
An F1 race on this track will be impossible without refueling.
1966 F1 drivers: hold my seatbelt
Why? The distance would still be about 300km per race which would mean less laps than usual but not refuelling, they also don‘t have to refuel in Monza which is essesiantially full throttle too.

I love how this ist pretty much eau rouge, raidillion and one straight... and then all of a sudden HAIRPIN xD
That hairpin is la source it still exists today
Wonderful. Can you do a lap of old Avus?
With the actual cars speed it would be a 400 km/h track
One mistake or tire/brake malfunction and you could end up in someone’s house at 300+ km/h
2:35 This part sounded so weird cuz all we’ve been hearing is a flat out car for 2 and a half minutes lol
The old Stavelot is such a stunning corner! Really curious what it might look like if this was still part of the modern track🙃
It is my favourite place on the track. But we have to say that the Masta kink was the most dangerous part of any track in the world. This senction was extreme
deadly. Imagine that with wet condition.
@@user-bf5hk6hk3lone thing remember is there is a picture of Stirling Moss driving through Masta Kink with a broken suspension in wet condition. Those men in the 60s must be daredevils
Adding to everything that was already commented, it is worth noting how Raidillon has been smoothed over the years; I think that bringing back this older version of the corner would also bring back some sort of challenge to the drivers navigating the curve, and it would also help slowing down the speeds carried trough that zone (although, it would be at the expense of runoff area right after Eau Rouge).
Wow didn't expect it to be this amazing!
I don’t blame you for closing DRS through Masta.
THANK YOU FOR THIS !!! -fan from St. Louis, MIssouri, USA.
What I'd really like to see is Max running a sim of Jim Clark's '65 car. Running today's cars is interesting but it doesn't reflect how difficult and scary the track really was.
Here's a period correct run:

@Chad Eren you are 9 months late. But not too late.
60's drivers had some iron balls to run on this circuit. Respect for them.
Fun fact: it was allowed to drive around the similar old spa until the year 2000 were it stopped and its outer layer was used for public roads as the government said
50 seconds (23%) faster than John Surtees managed for pole position in 1966. With modern eyes it's hard to imagine how a track like this was ok to race on, even 23% slower. 7 out of 15 starters crashed out early in the 1966 race too.
Lol, remember having to change down for quite a few of those corners on GP legends
yeah, the amount of downforce on modern cars means you can just put hold down on the loud pedal for everything except la source
Its like stage one of a WRC rally, how bloody fast 😊

Rip engine
So many high speed corner there.. so much fun.
The curves are just slightly arced straight for any F1 from the late 1970's up to now. ONLY one actual braking zone and two ease off of the throttle curves. That was crazy.
I dozed off and came to, and the lap isn't done yet.. what a circuit
That would be sheer madness.

Thank you! I've been waiting for someone to ask to do Mosport Park haha, I'll try and get all your suggestions done soon :)
Hi Mitsos, can you do a lap around Jarama, Pescara, Misano or Silverstone (the old layout) please. Thank you.
Yes, will do! Thank you for the suggestions
I'd add Montjuich Park to that list too.
That super long straight and then slamming the (cold) brake for the hairpin. Rip
“How many DRS zones does this circuit have?”

Seeing modern cars on old circuits just further illustrates how fast and dangerous they were.
I would never trust that i could be bored from an onboard lap

It would be cool to see a trackmap
I think group c cars have raced on this layout and they went around 350 topspeed
In the modern spa u can go on that hill corner without braking too much as long as you have a high entry speed
So...
"Flat around here"
"Flat around here"
"Bit of curb"
"And again... Flat around here"
The engine sound is so realistic
I always wondered why there were just no corners in those old circuits
Racing was a lot more about speed in those days, and not corners.
Even after being "nurtured", still the best track in the calendar. And it is no small feat to update old track like that to modern standards while keeping it's identity.
Imagine doing a race with 20 cars around this.

1:15 the masta kink, according to jackie stewart one of the if not the most difficult corners in the world
