I had front row seats for his concert in Muskegon Michigan. He came out and said how y'all like my new poncho? I got a pistol underneath. I shouted, mines bigger Waylon! He laughed so hard it took a while to get the music going. Best concert I ever went to
He was a very quiet soft spoken man. All he asked for in life was not being disturbed when his Atlanta Braves were playing on TV. But also the type when in a room and he spoke the whole room listened.
man oh man, does this take me back. this was the coolest era for country music. nothing coming out of nashville today can even come close to touching this.
I still have my Waylon LP featuring this song, bought back in the early 70's, in mint condition. I would never loan it out, which means the outer cover is also mint.
I used to sing with some of these guys! The Waylors circa 1969: The great Jimmy Gray on guitar and vocals, Rick Gilbraith on organ, Sonny Ray on bass, and Ritchie Albright on drums. All but Sonny are out of Phoenix. This was my favorite group of Waylors. Incredibly tight, their sound was never really equaled again. Jimmy later played guitar with Townes Van Zandt, and can be heard harmonizing w/ Townes on the live version of "Dead Flowers". I always had 2 favorite singers, Waylon and Jimmy.
Thanks for sharing the history. I think I've read all of these names on album covers, but wasn't knowledgeable enough to put a face with the name. Thanks for furthering my education!
I absolutely love this performance, and it's nice to see Waylon play lead. He still did from time to time, but his later (larger) backing bands usually had a lead guitarist. This video is like a Fender advertisement - Telecaster, P-bass, and Fender XII.
Ugly my foot! Absolutely gorgeous right through life. An absolute hunk. Fantastic singer and guitarist too. The tops. Love him to death and wish he were still with us. Play him every day. Thanks for posting
+david stanley My daddy used Wildroot Cream in his hair. We called it "greasy kid stuff". Ol' Waylon was a Texan and when I was "a little bitty teeny girl", he was a DJ for KOYL radio station here in town. Oh, be still my heart. My sister and I just loved him. A tall, good-looking fellow with a nice, deep voice. What's not to like?
+essiebl Had chance to meet and get Waylon's autograph in 1991 and he was the nicest man, and even said "thank you" for asking for his autograph !! He was a true gentleman ...
The man did have it all , the looks, voice and could play the he'll out a guitar. He had a sound that was his own. My generation makes crap country music "I'm 31" but there are a few that are trying to bring it back Chris Stappleton and Midland are two that I can think of. But yeah he was a rare breed.
No kidding. I saw this episode yesterday and when I saw him without a beard I was sure it wasn’t him. Once he started singing still wasn’t sure and really shocked 😅
Every once in a while someone who really has it going on comes along....Has the look...Has the sound....Waylon was one of those people....Miss him....And i love that Telecaster and Fender Super Reverb amp !!!
Charlie McCoy, who played harp on the studio version of this song revealed in a recent interview with Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale that Wayne Moss and Grady Martin flipped a coin to decide who would play the solo on this tune...Wayne Moss lost.....One of my favorite telecaster licks of all time!
yeah, you're right. I seen Wayne Moss on Marty Stuart show recently. still a great guitar player. He used a "jazzmaster" on the show. But I suspect a tele on the recording. The jazzmaster just doesn't have that tele sound as Waylon plays here.
Chet Atkins had his core studio musicians on his sessions and he rarely would allow the artist to play on his own song, beyond maybe strumming a guitar. Waylon wanted to have his own band play on his recordings but Chet discouraged it. It was a point of contention for Waylon and it affected his relationship with Chet. Still some great songs came out of those sessions!
goplad1 I heard Chet talk about this some time back. He said that RCA recording time was very tight and expensive and no time to waste. They had to do the whole album in one session so only top studio players were allowed to perform. Likes of Jerry Reed, Grady Martin. Hank Garland, Peter Drake, Rusty Young etc. But of course Waylon, Buck , Merle all wanted their own players. This is where the name "Outlaws" became famous. Chet asked Waylon what does this mean? Waylon did not reply. Chet looked very sad. Wayne Moss still excellent guitarist as seem on Marty Stuart show. Chet later became very good friends with Waylon.
Yeah, Chet wouldn't let the Waylors back Waylon, but strange enough Richard Albright, Paul Foster and Gerald Gropp did appear on some of his songs. See here countrydiscography.blogspot.ca/search/label/Jennings%20Waylon
I’m still flabbergasted at his performance! I just watched it in this version, I was born in 66, I was a fan when I didn’t even know who he was, just heard and liked him!
@michaelcorleonepate Yes, this is Waylon just a few years after his days playing bass for Buddy Holly. He still carried that image until he became one of the Outlaws in the late 60s.
I had front row seats for his concert in Muskegon Michigan. He came out and said how y'all like my new poncho? I got a pistol underneath. I shouted, mines bigger Waylon! He laughed so hard it took a while to get the music going. Best concert I ever went to
my grandpa told me at an early age "son,if you ever have a question about life just read the bible and listen to waylon"
Best advice I've heard in a long time
I like Grandpa's advice.
Your grandpa sounds like a very wise man😊
He was a very quiet soft spoken man. All he asked for in life was not being disturbed when his Atlanta Braves were playing on TV. But also the type when in a room and he spoke the whole room listened.
@@chvfd687 that’s when you know he knew what he was talking about and everyone knew they’d be wise to listen
It's fun to watch these old performances. There's nothing like those good old shows now.
This just goes to show how good of a player Waylon was
100% he could smoke it! 🚬
Fuckin beast
Incredible player. All time great players.
I had this album when it came out as a kid cause my dad liked it!
His guitar licks are incredible and underrated. Great performance!
100% they are very under appreciated
@@jacobaguilar6756 👍
Omg yes I've never heard anything like it before or since. I've been playing for 15 years can't come close 2 those licks
i dont care what kind of music you like .. how can you listen to this song
and not love it...
Waylon Jennings' had one of those immortal voices America will never truly forget!
If ya don't like that sompin wrong with ya
Not just America mate 🇳🇿
man oh man, does this take me back. this was the coolest era for country music. nothing coming out of nashville today can even come close to touching this.
I'll second that! The '60's and early '70's were the absolute best years in country. These videos bring back some great memories.
I’ll third that!
Fourth that!
young Waylon, 70s Waylon, it really doesn't matter to me. The guys voice added instant gravitas to anything he sang. His legend continues to grow
WAYLON JENNINGS AIN'T NO JOKE
Tommy Petersen Shooter is pretty good too
I still have my Waylon LP featuring this song, bought back in the early 70's, in mint condition. I would never loan it out, which means the outer cover is also mint.
His voice is very pleasant and attractive. I like the music too. This is the best type of music, todays music is trash indeed.
Man, Waylon is the cat's pajamas in that mustard-colored suit , and that Brylcreem in his hair! So *COOL*
Just a little dab will do ya !!!!

Didn’t Waylon’s brother play bass in his band for a while?
RIP Waylon, you're forever missed, but never forgotten!❤
❤❤you got that right, gone but never ever forgotten !❤❤
This is the richest voice in most genres. Miss you !!! RIP Waylon.
Style AND Substance. Waylon was the real deal!
Holy shit! What an artist.
The intro and all the guitar picking on this one is...to die for !! Love it ! Let's not forget his good looks either !!
Wow look at that Beautiful hair.good Good OL Waylon Jennings, God Love him
I absolutely love this performance, and it's nice to see Waylon play lead. He still did from time to time, but his later (larger) backing bands usually had a lead guitarist. This video is like a Fender advertisement - Telecaster, P-bass, and Fender XII.
Love me some Waylon
This tune is Mesmerizing
Ugly my foot! Absolutely gorgeous right through life. An absolute hunk. Fantastic singer and guitarist too. The tops. Love him to death and wish he were still with us.
Play him every day. Thanks for posting
essiebl He did have cool hair. I remember when men( those World War 2 guys) used to wear Brylecream in their hair.
essiebl I play him everyday too.to me Waylon was the best singer of all time.
+david stanley My daddy used Wildroot Cream in his hair. We called it "greasy kid stuff". First time I’ve ever seen Waylon without a beard. Like when my dad shaved every blue moon... got to get over my shock. Wow.
No kidding. I saw this episode yesterday and when I saw him without a beard I was sure it wasn’t him. Once he started singing still wasn’t sure and really shocked 😅
Waylons musical style is unequaled. Im a huge GD fan and i still love my REAL country
"That is awesome song of Waylon's he was so great ! I know most of his music by heart . he will be sadly missed he was a wonderful actor as well .
modern rock owes as much to this as it does to blues
this is the shit...damn...what a song and voice. r.i.p waylon, you are sorely missed.
Such a great lick, reminiscent of "Long Cool Woman" REAL country music died after the 70's.
Legendary Waylon Jennings
Daddy's favorite country singer. ❤️
Hearing this song in 67 or 68, I decided it was country music for me ! I never looked back
Absolutely the king of outlaw country! Still have this original album from when I was a kid in late 60-70s.
Every once in a while someone who really has it going on comes along....Has the look...Has the sound....Waylon was one of those people....Miss him....And i love that Telecaster and Fender Super Reverb amp !!!
He was funny and loved the camera!✌🏼💥🎸🎶👠😎🥁🎻
2022 and still listening to waylon Jennings 🖤💋✌
The first song I ever remember from many years ago that he sang. I loved it then and still love it.
Wow, a young Waylon. Very nice, I can understand every word he sings.
Waylon you won't be forgotten 🎸
Is anyone listen to this song in 2022
2024
Man that guitar is awesome..rj
ole “ShortStroke” Richie Albright was all over that one. Waylon’s tunes’ drum & bass parts were always world class
Wayne Moss played the lead guitar on the recorded version of this song. Waylon was an excellent guitarist in his own right. Does an excellent job!

Waylon is the MAN!!!!!!
Solid Gold Country. RIP Waylon.
I don't know what I love more than yellow suit haircut or music talent he's the whole package 😍
Outlaw country at its best! As a rock n roller its the country music that draws us into the genre.

This reminds me when I was 11 and I used to listen to my uncles records. Waylon was so awesome.
hands+fender telecaster+fender super reverb amp= holy grail of country tone, heaven!
Liked Waylon when I first saw the movie "Nashville Rebel"!
Waylon Jennings is the man
Waylon, the best in this field of music.
Classic country music. Was the best. I miss it. Waylon Jennings was a handsome man. A rebel & funny. What a voice & played great guitar 🎸🎼🎶🎤🤠
This man revolutionized country music and a real treat to see him on an early hee haw show around 1968 or 1969.
ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES!! THANKS FOR POSTING!!
R. I. P.
WAYLON 🎸🇨🇱 JENNINGS
Ralph Mooney
Good grief he was GORGEOUS and that voice makes my toes curl.

The King !!!!
I loved Waylon!!! He was so good. Thank you for sharing these.
I love this and my favourite version is the one he done on the Johnny cash show when he fluffed on the lines it's great
Wish he was still around, one of a kind for sure.
Legend
I’m coming unglued from your funny little moods .. great line
LEGEND
Waylon, not only a great singer but a fine picker too
One of my favourite songs by Waylon.
I’m still flabbergasted at his performance! I just watched it in this version, I was born in 66, I was a fan when I didn’t even know who he was, just heard and liked him!
Now this was country music
Gosh, I LOVE this song!
I miss the days when musicians really could play their instruments, Waylon is effortless cool.
Amazing guitarist, solo is harder than it looks
Especially Wayne Moss's take. Wayne did the guitar work in the studio version. Waylon made his own take of it
Love Ths Song Great Job !!!!!!!!!!!
this version is different than the one he did on the Johnny Cash show.. I love the song either way
Perfection!
Great! Thanx for posting this video!
I want all of the fans of WAYLON JENNINGS to be safe this Labor Day Weekend!
Thanks for your life Waylon RIP Cousin
@michaelcorleonepate Yes, this is Waylon just a few years after his days playing bass for Buddy Holly. He still carried that image until he became one of the Outlaws in the late 60s.
Waylon. IS Great On This Song He So Handsome In The Picture Rip
Thanks for posting! Love it.
He was so freaking HOT. I had a huge crush on him.
That's Waylon!!
This is some CLASSIC Waylon, before the Outlaw look. Same unique, rugged voice though.

Boogity....Boogity...
his vocals were awesome as he'll on this one can I get an amen
+Clinton Miller amen
Gotta love that "Yaller" suit.
Had to take "The Hoss" to pull that off
Hey,Garth Rebra this is real Country talent wooooooo 🎶🎶🎶 wooooooo Johnny from Alabama 🎶🎶🎶
Real music 🎸👍
Personally prefer pre-outlaw Waylon! 💜
I liked both
He was always an outlaw.
Yep, he is very handsome here, then he let himself go, he didn't look good in latter years. But he could still sing.
Glenys Wana Cocaine will do that to ya
this is my husband's kind of music
I heard this in Talladega Nights and knew it must be Waylon.
PERFECT.
hell yes! well said brother.
