Loved this video! So interesting! The chatter/noises in the background added to the ambiance 😉 I really enjoyed this glimpse into your life. Maybe take us on a day in your life out on the town?
Dorothea is a hard tourist, has visited the suburb, traveled by train to the west, frequented popular markets and lives in the favela, something that even I, as a resident of this crazy city, have no custom to do.
Great video!! ..It’s so funny because I was gonna to request this exact video in the comments of the other video you posted. I am considering moving to Rio so these videos help me out so much. Definitely one of my biggest concerns in violence (though I would not be living in the favela, It would be on ilha do governador). Safety is a big worry of mine, but I love the Brazilian culture and lifestyle so I’m still torn on what to do. Please keep making videos like this one and about Brazil in general! 🇧🇷 🇺🇸
So glad you liked it, thanks for the comment! The dangers are real, I don't wanna sugarcoat anything, but it's also overhyped IMO.. more videos like this coming! Stay tuned 😉 and do come to Brazil!
Hey @dorothea , thank you sharing info about Favela ☺️ but seems you have made this video just after wake up early morning 😘🤪. Btw tbh looking great as usual ❤️
@@Dorotheav I want to know why did you shift to Brasil and have been living in Favela. USA , as everyone knows, is one of the top 3 countries, in terms of education and high paid jobs. Please let me know why did you make such decision?? I am from India and many of my friends working and now settle in USA because of high standard of living. For you, this decision matters a lot especially when you are mother of a son "Max". Do you think "Max" can have better quality of education and living culture in Brazil. Please answer me Dorothea because I am very much curious about your opinion 😘
Jesus Dorothea! I love that you almost non-chalantly talk about people losing limbs haha but hey that is part of Brasil and the reality there I just love that you don’t let that effect your desire to live there you’re so strong I think similarly and don’t value “safety” so highly as most other Americans. I’m sorry but most of the world doesn’t live in a bubble like a lot of us do and I wish more of us would get out there in the real world like this, so cool ❤️
Free electricity probably is one thing we call “gato” they connect the electricity wires to the post directly (illegally) Been without water is pretty normal, not often but happens that’s why we have “caixa d’água” in our houses
Yess definitely merits its own video... One of the times I was motioning to put my phone in my purse (I stead of having it already in my purse before I got on the street) and the other time I was crossing through a tunnel (generally not a good idea, but it was broad daylight and it was a short tunnel in a "safer" area, but I saw and felt the group of kids who attacked me follow me before I got in the tunnel and I walked through there anyways..not smart). Future video coming with all the stories!!
Yeah, I remember your phone story when you stepped out of a bus right? I was impressed with your unwillingness to give up the fight, haha! That tunnel attack sounds scary! Really looking forward to hear all the stories ❤
Choosing to live in the favela is awesome. You dont have to pay for water and power bills, you dont pay property tax, you also dont have to pay for any public service such as public lightning, fire fighters, police etc. Internet service and cable TV is controlled by gangs that steal those signals and then you just pay a little for them, just enough to keep the gangs' structure and drug dealing running. In other words, you dont have to pay anything and you help finance the organized crime on the same time. That is the real about living in the favelas (slums). Congrats "gringa" (foreign). You are just one more to take advantage of Brazilians taxpayer. Congrats Karen Bon on having the mindset to expose the reality about the stupid glamorization that some foreign do on living in favela. Actually they have no idea the damage they do to Brazilian society.
@@staysharp2453 she s not even the least one. She has no responsibility whatsoever. No foreign does. They have to stop glamorize the life in the favelas though. It s been so damaging to Brasil.
@@nelson-al4663 "she s not even the least one", totally agreed, i expressed myself badly there. I think she is just a bit clueless about the danger, but still, i dont see the so called 'damage' to Brazil when foreigners dont realize the danger. All the risk is on their own accord.
Depends on what kind of lifestyle you're looking to live, and WHERE in Brazil. Rio in particular is NOT cheap. some things are cheap but overall its not what you might think of when you think of South American prices.. but outside of Rio I've found it to be significantly more affordable. Rio is totally livable though! Don't mean to scare you lol just being realistic ;)
@@Dorotheav no you didn't scare me lol and I was thinking about maybe going to Sao Paulo or another place in brazil (can't think of it off the top of my head) but Obrigada!😁
You are so HOT. Now that that's out of my systym I want to say your journalism skills are amazing, you really convey knowledge about your topics with great detail. Thank you so much!!!
That was just a superb encapsulation of so many living aspects of Rio. You may not realize it but you are REALLY good at analysis and should do it much more in your presentations. Take more time explaining contrasts and what may look to outsiders as contradictions because you have very valuable things to say and these can help travelers make much better decisions resulting in much more rewarding experiences. I cannot believe you have only 3220 views but its only been up for about 2 months so maybe it takes a while and its winter there now so few people go now. Hopefully they will hugely increase in our upcoming fall. Very few people would consider living in a favela but like you say, its a balanced experience and when you converse with your neighbors that community spirit can protect you, something you don't have in a big anonymous city.
Hey I am enjoying your videos!! I came across your videos randomly last night and have been watching them... Do you have Instagram? Would love to follow you. I am from New Zealand! Maybe one day you will visit. Kata Koria :)
So glad you found me! New Zealand is somewhere I have NOT been but would love to go, have only heard good things! When I lived in Hawaii I had a good friend there who was kiwi and she was the sweetest.. LOVE your accent!
Hey Dorothea, I was wondering if you have plans to move back to the US.. I can’t imagine you would want your son to go to public school in Brazil instead of having an education in the US. Is that something you guys think about?
Yes I got lucky with the furnishings, a lot of the time the houses here come partially furnished/unfurnished but the only thing of mine that I brought was the mattress. Closet, fridge, stove, couch all included. She just asked for the first month when we moved in, no deposit, no last month, which is consistent with my experience in every house I've lived in in the favela (over 8 moves now total haha I'm a pro) 😎
Living in the favela is not good at all. Leave this place as fast as possible! Really, you will definitely feel much better in the south and other parts of Brazil such as São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul etc. You are a survivor, God is protecting you big time! I wish you the best, God bless!
There are favelas and then there are favelas...they are not all created equal for sure, but I don't think it's correct to categorize them as all the same i.e. "bad." I've been living here for over two years and love it. It's not for everyone but I enjoy my life here. Not looking to move any time soon but I'm also probably not going to live here forever and ever 😉
That incessant dogs barking would drive me absolutely nuts. They should just ban dogs completely from urban environments. They almost never get ran or walked, they live a horrible life locked up in a house all day. And they wake you up all day, all night, whenever you try to sleep.
Hey thanks for the comment. I'm doing okay, been dealing with a lot of stress in my personal life and am aware I've lost a lot of weight because of it, but its under control. Thanks again
now THIS is the kind of videos I like to see AWESOME !!!
Haha glad you like it! I have more like it on the way ;)

When you were attacked, what were the things you did that made you vulnerable? Maybe a topic for another cool video? :)

Is it expensive to move from the U.S. to brazil?

Did you rent the house with all the forniture?
How much did the landlord ask for the first month rent? Any extra payment?

What if you normally have a shaved head? Will people think you're a thief?
Shrimp also means great body but not so great face. I dont know if its a compliment or not.
Ah ah I Love the part of "gringa perspective" jinhos gringa engraçada
I live in São Paulo and i need a "gringa" to show me the real life in Rio, this is weird. I dont trust the media anyway.
clr filho same here I’m Brazilian and never step my feet in the Favela
Legal

O Rio a cidade mais linda do Brasil. Sou da Bahia.
Whats going on with that dog

vc fica linda de cabelos soltos
Ok great video.
But I heard
1. Screaming child
2. Yelling adult
3. yelling dog
Where was the vacuum cleaner?!
0/10 Not Authentic
Not authentic? Those are the very real sounds of neighbors in the favela Aka out of my control haha
😂
You should check out the podcast cultish give it a listen!
Hope you’re okay. You’re looking very thin.
Hey thanks for the comment. I'm doing okay, been dealing with a lot of stress in my personal life and am aware I've lost a lot of weight because of it, but its under control. Thanks again
Sua aparência neste video não está boa. Não sei bem o que é talvez o cabelo, não sei. Mas sua aparência não está boa
