Relative to Tip # 9, I like to tell students they do not have to try and win the rally on every shot they take. They need to learn to be patient and wait for an optimum shot that will improve their chance of hitting a winning shot.
I will add a 10th for some of my playgroup - when possible, try to avoid hitting the ball while on the run. So glad you included #9! So frustrating when you have a partner that tries to hit a winner on every single shot. Great video, keep 'em coming.

Jordon I am new to pickleball and I want to say thank you for your wonderful tips! I now have a somewhat understanding of how to control the ball when I hit it! Your my new go yo pickleball Vidieo …thanks
Excellent tips to improve my game. I still consider myself a beginner ( will you somewhat define what a beginner and then an intermediate level of playing PB would be considered ?) but plan to incorporate many of these tips! Thank you! Love your videos and lessons!
Great video, it has a lot of great information that helps me coming from a tennis background. I was making several mistakes you pointed out from the long back swing and follow through to the catching the ball on the rise. Thank you!!
Love the video! I started playing about a month ago and beginners open, I've reached the point where I can run circles around most of the players. I decided to try intermediate and it was a completely different game, I got smoked. The main thing that concerns me is slams and being able to hit them back. This video had some great tips which I think will give me some more confidence. I'm still playing beginners because the Int. players are way too fast for me! Thank you for the tips.
Thanks for the comment! Welcome to the game :) Keep chipping away at inserting more intermediate strategies to your game and you will be able to compete in time and with practice. Lots of drills video on our channel to help with this.
gr8 tips as always distance coach! coming from table tennis i still get anxious and lose patience but getting better. 1 thing i still do is not being prepared for the fast return or thinking my opponent is not going to get my undersp[in and does and i wasn't ready for the return. but i am getting better at that too.
#1 was a good reminder....I’ve gravitated to a slight western for top spin and so I have popped up a lot of dinks and blocks at the NVZ....back to and staying with the continental..thanks for pointing this out.
Thanks for all of your help. Is there anything that you could can do when,( typically tennis orr ping pong players) your partner won't play at NVZ but prefers to play at baseline?
Yes, you can play skinny singles against them and show them how you dominate them when you come up and play from the NVZ line while they are at the baseline.
Love your work...Concerning holding your paddle at 10 or 11 o'clock (Tip #5), were you referring to a right-handed player? I'm left-handed so would I try holding it at 1 or 2 o'clock? Thanks.
I like the comment comparing Pickleball to chess. Another analogy is a sniper. A sniper is patient, and always ready to “pull the trigger” but knows when that is the best time. He’s also chosen carefully the best position to be in both before and after the shot. He’s also ready for a followup shot in case he didn’t put away the target on the first shot.
thank you so much..what do you do with partners who always stay at the base line...only coming up to the kitchen line if the serve is to their partner? They only want to hit long shots....
That’s a tough one. Everyone is entitled to play the way they want to play. If you’ve communicated the wisdom in moving up and they’re just not interested then play with other people.
Can you put a strategy guide on how to play with a left handed player as a right hander? When ever I play with a lefty the dual forehand in the center becomes a danger zone when it shouldnt
Great information! Thank you! Any tips for those of us playing both pickle ball and tennis regularly? I find it hard to transition between the two. Especially going from PB back to tennis!
Some good tips, but I totally disagree with #8. Where in the bounce you should take the shot depends on several things. I seldom take a shot right at the Apex of the bounce. Also, as a 50 years Chess tournament veteran, I am always dubious of comparisons. In this case, you do a pretty good job. I think the analogy is apt: in both games, although you need to be ready to pounce on your opponents' mistakes, usually, if you try to attack before some sort of weakness is there, the counterattack is deadly.
I believe modern pickleball is a power game. I don't believe, however, in banging balls from the baseline when my opponents are up at the NVZ line, My feet are exposed and I am giving my opponent a lot of angles. At the pro level most 3rd shot drives are hit right at the opponents' chest. That way, they don't have time to get out of the way and end up hitting high balls, As far as I know 3rd shot drives are hit to set up an easy 5th shot drop, My two cents. Any thoughts?
3rd shot drives are just another option to the drop or lob. There are many different reasons to drive the ball. To get an easier 5th shot, to try to get some free points, to set up a shake and bake, etc. We will do an extensive video on this soon.
@@primetimepickleball just do not think it is usually possible to win a point banging balls from the back of the court. Certainly not against good players.
Hi..My name is Thanya. I really like your teaching and methods and techniques, but I have a question:- 1. The opponent served the ball very quickly and called a lot of court, unable to bounce back.😥 2. Want to know " how to hit the ball back when my opponent hits the ball very close to my body. Thanks advance.. 🙇♀️
I’m not clear on exactly what you’re asking in #1, can you please clarify your question? For #2, work on your hand quickness so you can catch it out in front as much as possible and work in sliding out of the way with the feet or shifting your upper body if there’s less time. Cover your body with your backhand.
Hi Nicole & Jorden. While I personally like to take the ball at its apex or even after; there are times and reasons to quickly short hop the ball. Players like the Dawsons use quick hop dinking to take time away from their opponent. At times I use it to prevent a long dinks to get behind me. The bad part of using that short hop is that balls will not bounce up into the yellow attack zone limiting your attack options. The other thing I would like to mention is that defensively midcourt you will seldom be able to allow the ball to apex. It might make for a good video of when is it best to allow a ball to apex and when is it best short hop or chip and charge the ball.
I wanted to point out a new way of thinking for people to think about? I have a very short history of pickelball. at 70 ,I played tennis, badminton, and ping pong tournaments , but 40 years ago. we all hear, if you want to get better, play better people? I have found my best improvement days were playing people, not as good as I am. I can practice shots that are harder to practice with better power people. you may need a mindset of getting better than winning my third shot drop was non-existent . No soft hands popping it up, with too stiff of a grip. by playing easier people, I am slowing down and softening up. possibly a 50% improvement in three days. on the third shot drop. and am starting to believe I can hit it when the ball is coming. for those looking to improve , try it.
Awesome stuff Dave! You are ahead of the game. I made a video on this not too long ago. I have used playing against lower level players in the exact same way and it really works out well for all. Thanks for the comment!
Really? That's a bit surprising. Having previous racket skills usually helps. Is pickleball a different game so you have to adjust...yes! But you come with some form of strokes already so it won't all be totally new to you.
I disagree, pickleball is faster game than tennis unless you're pusher tennis player? Beings the court 1/3 smaller , It seems faster. The short paddle and plastic balls can not be hit with force of tennis ball and 27 inch long racket. Pickleball is dink game with little effort compared to tennis. Imo the third shot drops only good it you get it to drop. Bounce it to high and it gets put away.
It is usually used for people who have lots of PHD's and long lists of relevant history in what ever field. For example an author like Steven King, you would probably would not mention all of his books or movies.
