They critized Miss Panama Gloria Karamañites so much because she was the first black Panamanian to represent us in Miss Universe, she shut up everyone that said so much negativity about her being great and classifying Panama for the 4th time after 1952, 1953 and 1974 with the wonderful Jazmine Panay. All the love and blessings Gloria, I know you are doing great and as beautiful as always!
Miss USA was a great Miss Universe - a fresh, stunning beauty, such a charming southern usa beauty. Though in 81 when she crowned the winner she looked like a snake. Always beautiful however, and did a good job later in the american program Baywatch.
1980 was also the same year South Korean broadcast television switched to full color. So Miss Universe had to be held for the first time in Seoul after South Korean TV went full color.
This is my honest opinion. Even though Ms USA was gorgeous and perhaps deserved the win, I agree with you about the hype towards her. In these type of pageants and other international competitions, world politics goes hand in hand with them. The USA itself started the 80s decade in a political and economic mess (high unemployment, American hostages crisis in Iran, Russia's invasion of Afghanistan and the summer olympics boycott started by the US as a result of it, etc - you can do a Google search on these). The Carter presidency left quite a bit to be desired (but that's a whole other topic). Anything to boost the morale of the country was more than welcome. Prior to this pageant, the famous "Miracle on ice" happened in the winter olympics in Lake Placid, New York, when the US hockey team beat the Soviet Union (Russia); something most people wouldn't have thought would happen. Shawn Weatherly's win that evening could have been a continuation of the "morale boosting" the nation was looking for.
That little hilly bridge as a part of the stage decoration layout didn't help. It was a cause of the rushing-lateness of the parade of nations. But also a cause was clearly that for the 1980 pageant, the producers or directors wanted the candidates to shorten their introductions with just their name and country. It left for no time for the next candidate to get to the microphone. It's a good thing they went back to the normal warm introduction style the year after.
The host was incredibly mean to miss Puerto Rico for not being able to speak English smh. She was only 18. Also the translator was horrible 😂 who let that guy on. Miss Panama didn’t want to be a Newspaper lady, she wanted to be a journalist.
This was before the MUO found and settled with the incredible translation service company that they had from the early or mid-80s to the 2000s with some of the translators who became recognized by pageant fans.
Chat's evening gown was the deal breaker when she made it to the Top 12 and Top 5. She finished 2nd in both preliminary and semifinal evening gown round.
A few similarities, but the difference is Miss New Zealand is out there aiming to be a regal woman, whereas Swift is another one of today's "big girls" who don't want to face that they're no longer teenagers.
What they did to miss Puerto Rico during personal interview was super unfair... he says they will start in english while she doesn't speak much english and she has a translator right there, he should have given her the chance to answer in spanish since the beginning, then he says she " doesn't know how to speak Spanish either " while she was just confused in each language she was supposed to answer since he told her to start in english... and to add up to that, the translator doesn't translate what she says properly, probably because he was nervous.

The alphabetical order was interrupted during the moment with Misses Bermuda and Bolivia. Bermuda introduced herself, but Bolivia interrupted her, causing Bermuda to repeat her introduction. If Miss Bermuda did not repeat her introduction, then the alphabetical order would have successfully continued. But Miss Bolivia really should have paid closer attention. Thanks to Miss Korea, the alphabetical order was restored when she waited to let Miss Japan introduce herself, but this caused the camera crew not to adjust quickly and miss focusing the camera on Japan.

The parade of nations was a mess....so rushed it was ridiculous. And then the contestants got mixed up and the countries got out of order. Ugh
