What I don’t like Super is that it made Videl into another Chichi instead of being a badass Martial artist from DBZ. Toriyama has a terrible way ow he treats on Strong women or his perspective on them, except Bulma, in the World of Dragon Ball. I find it inevitable on how he treats them, especially how a few change dramatically.
Non canon feels so limiting when it comes to dragon ball. I think everything is canon but its another dimension or timeline. I even consider the manga a timeline just like any other dragon ball series like dbz into gt and kai into super and the other movies being other timelines. Dragon ball heroes makes this work too.
Factually it’s like this-super IS and ISNT canon. DBZ has 3 canons. Dbs manga is toriyamas manga continuation canon. Dbs anime is canon to Kai,and gt is canon to the DBZ anime. It’s obvious from how super only uses Kai music/voices/and only the filler Kai approved of and not z exclusive filler like garic jr. It all depends on what continuity (canon) you’re watching. So both versions of super are canon and so is gt,they’re just SEPERATE CANONS! James Bond/dc/marvel/Pokémon /other franchises have multiple canons as well. Nothing new.

Can't we just claim Death Of The Author for Minus? I mean it's clearly not that Bardock that was mentioned or shown in Z, Kai and the Manga, that bardock never faced Frieza beaten and bloodied like that was shown in the special. The details of what is shown in those works match nothing in Minus.
I'm new to your channel just finished watching this video. Great insight in explaining what is canon and what's not, to be completely honest I have watched DB, DBZ, and GT since I was 13 and I'm 33 now and I don't really care if GT isn't canon or Super, etc for me if you're a fan of the franchise then you should appreciate all of them. I'm old school and the original Japanese version is by far the best adaptation of the series but of course, being from the UK we had the US version on Cartoon Network and I still loved it! I think (us) fans should just enjoy it and not worry if anything is canon it's just Anime it's not real lol.
In my opinion SUPER is way more better and canon than GT......coz its not a fully faithful adaptation to manga but its still represents a fraction of story from akira toriyama.
If Gohan did ever saved Zangya from Bojack, her life would of been spared and reformed as a Z Fighter. And who knows? May be Gohan’s first Waifu before Erasa and Videl came.

The issue with this video is that it makes the assumption that canon is what Akira Toriyama produces. This is never stated by Toei or any other official source. That is merely a fans assumption. In reality, it’s all canon. The Manga, the anime, even the filler. It is all legitimate and officially produced by Toei. The difference is that these mediums lie in different continuities. This has been confirmed by Toriyama himself which (by the logic of this video) makes stories not written by Toriyama “canon”. And with the multiverse that has clearly been established by officially produced Dragon Ball material one clearly can see how this is the case.

The way I see it, Dragon Ball has become so muddled with different content that there is no real canon, not if you're primarely a fan of the anime (which most non-Japanese DB fans are). So the only thing I can say is: YOU decide what you consider canon or not. What version of Bardock's backstory is canon? Well maybe it happened this way, or maybe it happened that way... they're different interpretations of the same story. I like the original Bardock tv special, so that's canon to me. I do like some elements of Dragon Ball minus, so I like to cherry pick some of the parts I liked. Are the driving school and baseball episodes canon? ABSOLUTELY! I love those episodes, and nobody will ever tell me that they're not canon and therefore don't matter. And as for DB Super versus DB GT. To me they're just two alternate continuities in the Dragon Ball franchise. GT is canon to the original run of the anime, not to the original manga. Super is canon to the rebooted continuity. Just enjoy the show. It's a lot more fun when you drop the canon discussions.
A Dragon Ball Super Kai faithfully following the manga would be sick! Though it's probably better for the casual audiences to just let the anime be the canonical version. Either way,there's no perfect outcome to this. I just wish they would come out and tell us which is canon already

From Db to Z is canon. Db Kakarot is considered canon including the side missions etc and they refused to add GT DLC or anything in Super. Super is trash and it should be declared as non canon like Heroes.
So in short, the only canon in dragon ball is the Original Dragon ball manga which starts with Goku’s introduction and ends with Goku leaving with uub. If you don’t care about canon then watch anything db related.
I love GT, GT is actually cannon because you cannot anyhow trademark dragon ball character without Akira toriyama agree. Goku is so strong in GT that he can destory space and time chamber . Regardless here's how I figure things DB > DBZ (including DBZ movies) > DBGT (and GT movie) DB (including Minus) > DB Kai > DBSuper (including Broly) That's how I prefer to think of the canon. It's downright ignorant to disclude GT and obviously DBZ doesn't match up to DB Super since there is way too much filler and continuity errors.
I consider xenoverse as the true Canon. That way everything is just another universe. Ssj4 is too cool for it not to be canon. So future trunks gets caught up because he time traveled by Supreme kai of time and shows him all of time. Blue hair trunks is the same trunks but not. He's the trunks that didn't get caught. Also super isn't the same as gt so trunks hair is different. The trunks we all know from buu saga is gt trunks. This super trunks is a different timeline. It's all xenoverse or else nothing makes sense.
The cannon debate always annoyed me, i really liked most movies and to me non cannon stuff always was better But in the end it doesn't really matter anymore to me i like dbz (+filler) gt the movies and a bit of dbs and thats all i care about
super just isn't cannon for me. its more than obvious that akira toriama is just letting the studios do whatever they want with the franchise, and whats best for the studio is to target a younger audience. dragonball gt was handled the same way, but it still held true to the original series WAY more than super does, and as someone who has waited decades for a true continuation of the series, i am extremely disappointed.
1. DBZ is not canon to Super, as Super uses statements, actors, flashbacks, and lore from Kai 2. Bardock the Father of Goku is canon to the OG anime not the manga or Kai 3. the movies aren't canon to the manga as has it's own version of the BoG arc, RoF the movie is not canon to the manga as they skipped it, there is a promotional manga for RoF but it's a tie in to the movie and is labeled as DBZ 4. the most you can say about the different versions of super is that the manga follows Toriyama's OG manga and the anime follows Kai, although they do overlap as both are canon to Super Broly

In my opinion, if the original creator/writer sells or relinquishes the rights, then whatever the new owners does with the story ( whether good or bad) becomes cannon.

You didn't define canon properly. The term is a biblical reference, almost a parody of The Church canonizing which scripture contained, "The word of God". So there is no Dragon Ball canon, because there actually has to be a canonization process, as in officials actually deciding which works are the definitive true narratives. The Japanese don't even understand the concept of canon, but for reason it's this obsession for Western fans, when it's not even a thing in Japan. Also, the original manga has multiple versions. For example, there are two different endings (1995 ending, 2004 revised ending) so you can't just say, "it's 100% canon" when there's multiple versions of his original work. So, which one would be, "muh canons" when Toriyama has never mentioned the word canon, nor said which version of his work or others works are part of the definitive "canon" works? You're just in a state of subjectivity. The closest is Toriyama throwing around descriptions like, "Parallel world" or, "Grand side story" but that has nothing to do with what canon means.
everything in the dragon ball franchise is canon. it's just happened in different universes/dimension. Since DBS has introduced parallels world, we surely can't exclude this idea

What's definitively canon is the original story so the dragon ball manga and the dragon ball and dragon ball z anime. Then dragon ball super is its own canon because toriyama writes dot points for the plot to give to toie and toyotaro were toyotaro and toie have made changes to those dot points eg: merged Zamasu was supposed to be as strong as two super Saiyan blues but toie changed the story to bring back vegito then toyotaro did the same as toriyama gave them the all clear to make those changes. The dbs broly movie is another example were the toie staff created super Saiyan broly full power which wasn't in toriyamas script nor was the change told to toriyama or the fact that there was a lot of cut scenes but toriyama didn't care that much. They have changed the context of scenes because toriyama didn't create any eg: beerus destroys an alien planet in the anime because the food was bad while in the manga it was because he was poisoned or how trunks defeated zamasu in the anime it was a spirt bomb sword while in the manga zamasu was deteriating and trunks sliced him in half with his normal sword with Vegeta obliterating the zamasu clones regenerated from the pieces. so toriyama didn't write a whole lot for the dbs writters to tell the story definitively. The fact is that dragon ball super doesn't have a definitive canon version of the story so it's divided into multiple canon's and is a separate canon from the original dragon ball story. Gt is a side story so it's an optional continuation of dragon ball that is neither canon or non canon because it's a side story it's up to the audience to see if they want it to be canon then they can link it to the story if they don't want it to be canon then it's just a side story. That's the way toriyama sees it as a optional companion continuation to the story but isn't Canon in the same way the manga is. Were gt is just the optional canon continuation of the dragon ball story that isn't not canon but it's isn't canon either. Dragon Ball video games are completely not canon because toriyama does next to nothing with them and they are heavily contrict the dragon ball story and each other video game The movies are not canon to the manga being set in a separate dimension (including evolution) but some movies like dead zone are canon to the anime only.
GT has as much Toriyama influence as Super does lol both can be canon or non-canon however you look at it. Best to just look at it as different versions of the DBZ storyline.

So future trunks gets caught up because he time traveled by Supreme kai of time and shows him all of time. Blue hair trunks is the same trunks but not. He's the trunks that didn't get caught. Also super isn't the same as gt so trunks hair is different. The trunks we all know from buu saga is gt trunks. This super trunks is a different timeline. It's all xenoverse or else nothing makes sense.

super just isn't cannon for me. its more than obvious that akira toriama is just letting the studios do whatever they want with the franchise, and whats best for the studio is to target a younger audience. dragonball gt was handled the same way, but it still held true to the original series WAY more than super does, and as someone who has waited decades for a true continuation of the series, i am extremely disappointed.

2. Bardock the Father of Goku is canon to the OG anime not the manga or Kai
3. the movies aren't canon to the manga as has it's own version of the BoG arc, RoF the movie is not canon to the manga as they skipped it, there is a promotional manga for RoF but it's a tie in to the movie and is labeled as DBZ
4. the most you can say about the different versions of super is that the manga follows Toriyama's OG manga and the anime follows Kai, although they do overlap as both are canon to Super Broly

You didn't define canon properly. The term is a biblical reference, almost a parody of The Church canonizing which scripture contained, "The word of God". So there is no Dragon Ball canon, because there actually has to be a canonization process, as in officials actually deciding which works are the definitive true narratives. The Japanese don't even understand the concept of canon, but for reason it's this obsession for Western fans, when it's not even a thing in Japan. Also, the original manga has multiple versions. For example, there are two different endings (1995 ending, 2004 revised ending) so you can't just say, "it's 100% canon" when there's multiple versions of his original work. So, which one would be, "muh canons" when Toriyama has never mentioned the word canon, nor said which version of his work or others works are part of the definitive "canon" works? You're just in a state of subjectivity. The closest is Toriyama throwing around descriptions like, "Parallel world" or, "Grand side story" but that has nothing to do with what canon means.
everything in the dragon ball franchise is canon. it's just happened in different universes/dimension. Since DBS has introduced parallels world, we surely can't exclude this idea

What's definitively canon is the original story so the dragon ball manga and the dragon ball and dragon ball z anime.
Then dragon ball super is its own canon because toriyama writes dot points for the plot to give to toie and toyotaro were toyotaro and toie have made changes to those dot points eg: merged Zamasu was supposed to be as strong as two super Saiyan blues but toie changed the story to bring back vegito then toyotaro did the same as toriyama gave them the all clear to make those changes. The dbs broly movie is another example were the toie staff created super Saiyan broly full power which wasn't in toriyamas script nor was the change told to toriyama or the fact that there was a lot of cut scenes but toriyama didn't care that much. They have changed the context of scenes because toriyama didn't create any eg: beerus destroys an alien planet in the anime because the food was bad while in the manga it was because he was poisoned or how trunks defeated zamasu in the anime it was a spirt bomb sword while in the manga zamasu was deteriating and trunks sliced him in half with his normal sword with Vegeta obliterating the zamasu clones regenerated from the pieces. so toriyama didn't write a whole lot for the dbs writters to tell the story definitively.
The fact is that dragon ball super doesn't have a definitive canon version of the story so it's divided into multiple canon's and is a separate canon from the original dragon ball story.
Gt is a side story so it's an optional continuation of dragon ball that is neither canon or non canon because it's a side story it's up to the audience to see if they want it to be canon then they can link it to the story if they don't want it to be canon then it's just a side story. That's the way toriyama sees it as a optional companion continuation to the story but isn't Canon in the same way the manga is. Were gt is just the optional canon continuation of the dragon ball story that isn't not canon but it's isn't canon either.
Dragon Ball video games are completely not canon because toriyama does next to nothing with them and they are heavily contrict the dragon ball story and each other video game
The movies are not canon to the manga being set in a separate dimension (including evolution) but some movies like dead zone are canon to the anime only.
