I have a good friend who has done the summer intensive 5 times and open auditions 3 times! Hoping she makes it someday, I’ll be there to see her show for sure!
inspire734 in reference to your idea that women have curves all over... many women have small chests, no hips, and if they work out enough, their backs will be flatter than the typical curved back of a woman. Personally, when I’m a standard weight for my size, I do not have curves all over. So please don’t take your weird conspiracy theory as fact, because you’re most likely not thinking this up yourself, you’re just following along with something that for some reason made sense in your mind at the time. I love a good conspiracy theory, but you have to be able to discern what could potentially be true and what is complete BS.
Me too! Though I'm not exactly a dancer by any stretch of imagination. I think if I could get my leg up that high ,..somebody would be injured.,or a shoe would go flying off. I was shocked to learn they are paid peanuts for the tough job they do. Somebody needs to buck up!
if one goes down and they were linked they would all go down but this way them not being linked doesn’t bring them all down and the one goes down and gets back up
Me too. I took amateur dancing and we did the odd lineup, but always had our arms touching the others' backs, even when we high kicked. And we were not out of sync because of it.
We were taught that we were responsible for holding our own body up straight, which these girls, I've noticed, don't always do. I've seen a few bend their torsos just a tad during high kicks.
The video gets it slightly wrong... the reason for the policy is center of mass. It's a liability to touch because shifting your weight onto another person is dangerous. It can mess with the synchronicity but that is only a side effect of the added effort it takes to support your weight and another dancer (or 2). When everyone is responsible for their own weight, it makes things safer and more efficient.
One of our dancers from our studio attended the Summer intensive and she tried out and made the team and has been a RCR for the last three years. Her name is Nadia and it’s easy to pick her out because she has beautiful red hair. With all that she does, she comes home to Ohio and gives her to the studio with the little ones and helps the older girls with their solos. She is truly amazing! Although I did not see her in this video. We love you Nadia!!!!
It's not a reality show but they have a 4 episode series called "A Road to Spectacular" here on RUclips. They run between 4 and 8 minutes but they're great.

Dance moms is a reality tv show. This is a production business. I don’t know what’s wrong about it. Dance moms “works” more hours over drama (not say they don’t work) but a lot of what they do is for show. These are working adults.
Dean Maher they are also seasonal performers, ballet dancers put more hours in then the rockets and the dance mom girls. Seriously you sound so dumb, of course the dance mom girls put in more hours they go to a new comp every week and are learning new numbers every week. You are practically comparing apples to oranges.
I had a dancer friend who made it into the Rockettes after dreaming about it since she was small; saw her years later and she said she absolutely hated it and left after a couple of years. Since everyone had to look the same, the underlying need for individuality turned into jealousy.☀️
I've danced with 2 Rockettes as well in NYC, both had more fun with our go-go company and did not stay with the Rockettes for more than one holiday season.
That’s not to say that the rockettes are mean people. To look very similar is crucial for majority of dance styles and the professionalism in the rockettes requires even more uniformity.
Left after a couple of years. Considering everyone auditions every year, your friend wasnt under contract and chose to return each year. Only one to blame is your ugly friend.
A former rockette was a tap teacher at my studio and she choreographed dances with kick lines in them. You can't actually put your hands on the backs of the people next to you because the strength of the arm can push you forward and make the line all wonky. Another little fun fact, if one person trips and falls in the kick line, the whole line goes down like dominoes

I’m a dancer and I do tap and once my teacher choreographed a dance based on the rockets and we had to rehearse in straight lines and learn to be exactly the same. It was hard and we even did the kick-line. It was a hard performance so I kind of know what they go through. I loved the dance and it was fun to do.
How add to the 'dance,' singing and acting! :) I'm a former dancer and musician (pit) turned nurse. This made me miss it all but I know I was called to service. Still, stellar! Beautiful performance of hard work I can appreciate. Reminds me of marching ensemble..formation, perfection, and playing a symphony while moving!
This brought back so many memories for me! In the mid-70’s I worked in Manhattan while my (then) husband refused to leave his hometown - a 6 hour train ride each way. I made many friends on those weekend train trips, including a guy who was The Man in charge backstage. He had some great stories, and I was even able to visit, and watch several shows from his vantage point. So awesome. And even though I was a dancer back then, I was (and still am!) too short to even have considered a career change… Thanks for this 👍
And they still don't earn enough to live in New York City hardly. They're barely making over the average American. But I guess when you love what you do that much then it's worth it.
Just looking at them makes me smile 😃 I grew up in NY and my mother would take me & my sister to see the Christmas Spectacular...I just love the Rockettes!
There’s no comparison between any other female dance show and this elegant and timeless masterpiece. The thought that anyone, like the comment below would bring up the dance mom’s as any type of comparison, which is heavily edited and some dont actually dance properly, is offensive. Let’s just appreciate the class of this, its rare. ❤
Always admired the dancers. I have respect for all of you. Your performances are unbelievably amazing. Thank you for sharing this information. Happiness and Peace to everyone!! ❤🙏🎶
I've always wanted to be a Rockette ever since I was 3 & I went to see them so I begged my mom to put me in dance class but i can't be one due d the high requirement ( I'm 5'1) so that kinda sucked when i found out.
I dreamed of being a Rockette. I did that type of precision dancing in a local dance group. It’s hard work! Hours of rehearsal every day for months just to put on a three hour show once a night for a week for charity. Wouldn’t trade the experience for the world, but I never made it to the Rockettes. My last show I was pregnant but didn’t know it yet. Changed the course of my life but in a good way.
I know a current Rockette! She used to be my dance teacher for a bit, and she'd tell her students about what it's like to be a Rockette. It's tough, but we could always tell that she loved every second of it. Genuinely one of the most incredible people I know
Wow. I've always known that they are very busy people with a high level of dedication and true professionals, but to have it broke down like that. Incredible. Very impressive.

My family and I all love to watch the Rockettes. We are especially pleased that as of 2021 they have taken on a young woman who is missing her hand. She is beautiful and a fabulous dancer.
When I was still a teenager Radio City was open every day complete with a movie, The Rockettes performed 7 days a week as did the orchestra and the ballet. Radio City decided to cut back the schedule for financial reasons. When I heard this I unthinkingly remarked "Glad I didn't decide to be a Rockette because I'd be unemployed." A coworker overheard the remark and remarked "I didn't know you were going to be a Rockette." Once again I had put my foot in my mouth and had to explain that I was trying (unsuccessfully) to be sarcastic.

I was (once) a dancer and also on dance team all through high school, and actually had several instructors/choreographers etc. ask me if I had ever considered trying out for the Rockettes. I admit, I had great high kicks! (And I’m 5’ 8” lol.)
I know a retired Rockette who threw away the scale the day she left. She is in her 70s now and can still strike a pose and kick amazingly well. But she told me it was constrant and grueling work but she loved her 25 years of performing.

I'm a competitive dancer, and you literally have to change in front of everyone in the changing rooms, often I had to change in the hallways of the building I was performing.
When I took dance classes, the makeup was as precise as which exact and precise shades of eyeshadow, eyeliner, lip liner, blush and lipstick we had to get, and how precise our foundation had to be with our skin tones (two shades darker, I think) and how to blend into the neck... ugh, the details gave me a headache! And these girls are lucky : they didn't have hair changes to do! I did! It was the worst when we had to go from something like a bun into a French braid... with the exact same details as them - not one hair sticking out. Crazy!
Wow, i am impressed with each group performance. Us Guys would catch up to equal opportunity options. A charted difference for aparticular time separation between gender regards. Even how the value of achievement needs recruiting grace? Very good examples and standards.

So awesome. And even though I was a dancer back then, I was (and still am!) too short to even have considered a career change… Thanks for this 👍
To have an once of their dedication , I would be so much further in life .
Same here. 😥
And they still don't earn enough to live in New York City hardly. They're barely making over the average American. But I guess when you love what you do that much then it's worth it.
Facts and people still trying to live off of a small paycheck
Just looking at them makes me smile 😃 I grew up in NY and my mother would take me & my sister to see the Christmas Spectacular...I just love the Rockettes!
Bravo for never lowering their standards one bit.
I get exhausted just looking at them rehearsing, but the shows are spectacular.
Welcome to my world. I'm 4ft 10'. I don't fit height requirement for many dance parts.
When I’m older I might be able to do it but right now I’m like 5’0 but I’m y’all for my age
I’m too tall to be a rockette so I feel ya
@@riana4691 haha looks like even tall ppl have trouble
I feel your pain I’m barely 5’3
Absolutely beautiful.
AMAZING DISCIPLINE AND GEORGEOUS LADIES..
HDJ
I tap danced for 8 years and I was set on being a Rockette when I graduated high school...then I learned I'm 2 inches too short :(
Aw man that’s sad 🥺
now that really sucks :(
I’m sorry ☹️
I'm sorry! There are so many other shows though that are just as prestigious
I think that's terrible about the height since it's truly something someone can't help etc. They could easily figure out a way to visually fix it
I dreamed of being a Rockette.
Genuinely one of the most incredible people I know
1:17 It’s nice to have woman in a position of leadership, like Karen Keeler
Joe we have millions of women in "positions of leadership' worldwide. Its not a new phenomenon!😉

Very Fake News CNN speaking about sexism does not make it sexist.
Amazing. I’m very happy that the company does not abuse the bodies of the dancers in terms of diet. God bless. Amen!
And they also have to step in for injuries/sick colleagues. So every "swing" dancer has to know 9 extra positions.
Wow. I've always known that they are very busy people with a high level of dedication and true professionals, but to have it broke down like that. Incredible. Very impressive.
Woooow
When they do the eye high kicks they're not holding eachother. Their hands are hovering just over their costumes. That's unreal right there 👀
I would love to see them live!
There’s no other show like it!!
As others have said, I think the arm location during the kick line was the most surprising. Amazing dancers!!
Awesome! As athletic as artistic. National treasures! I always enjoy watching them on TV.
I am an America citizen and I never knew what a rocket was until today when I clicked on this video! Amazing! 😊
Rockette not rocket I would hope by now you knew what a rocket is 🚀
You must be young to never have heard of the Rockettes before.
YaYa. Im 26 and I just heard about it. Maybe its a east coast thing? I live on the west coast and no one talks about them.
@@titanicgirl774
Im 32, live on the East Coast and never have hers of them either.
They stay in shape by "runing".
You ladies are AMAZING and never let anyone tell you different or tear you down! I wish i could see a show. Im sure it's magical🎀🎀🎀 Seeing a performance just once in my life would be a dream come true. I am so amazed that you create special moments for invisible and truly out of love
I am 11~ I went to the Christmas show today and last year. I even had a dance lesson w them this morning in the rehearsal hall
rockette height requirement: no shorter than 5’6
me at age 14, praying i will one day be a rockette and is already 5’8: “YESSS ONE RHING DOWN SEVEN MILLION THINGS TO GO”
Unless you are born into the system and a male androgyne you won't make it. They are all males. They along with the whole entertainment industry have been fooling us all our lives, but not any more. Look to the male flat backs, sure fire sign. All of Hollywood and music, politicians, actors are all inverted sexually. It is a system they are born into. No out siders. They make a great amount of money, all the top ones do.
@@inspire734 the rockettes are all women what are you talking about?
If you work hard and train smart you are totally in with a chance!!!!
@@inspire734 You have done lost the plot!! WTH? They are NOT males! Good god! You definitely win idiot award today with your conspiracy theories! Oi! 🤦♀️🙄😡
Lol also the fact that she mentioned that they make a lot of money is ridiculous! They are woman... and they are broke. But they love what they do and they work hard for it! Keep taking classes and you’ll be dancing in Radio City Music Hall in no time!
Shorties and sexy strong let us start our own dance company!
Go for it YackBackatcha
My family and I all love to watch the Rockettes. We are especially pleased that as of 2021 they have taken on a young woman who is missing her hand. She is beautiful and a fabulous dancer.
most surprising is i can't believe i did this for 21 years!!
You were on the team for 21 years!!!? Any insights you want to share?
@@jilliannyc2124 on what specifically? going to look for you on FB as i share several memories on there, i am Lara Alysa on there
I loveThe Rockettes they are so graceful when they move. ❤️👍
Amazing routines and dances. If I ever get to seem them in person I will certainly appreciate their efforts even more!!!
*No shorter than 5 foot 6 inches.. You've gotta be tall to be a rockette*
Me, standing at 5'9":
Me 5'10 LOL

Caro Line ok boomer
HollehMae I’m 22 which apparently makes me a lot younger than you, and that’s not even where should use that sksksks it’s cute to see someone just learn new internet term tho. Get that sleep, lady.
I must know her! I was there for 28 years and am in my 70s now😂And yes, it was grueling but also made lifelong friendships❤
My grandma was a rockette
Amazing!
That is truly something to be VERY proud of! A Tradition in New York and I bet she had MANY stories to tell!
Wow shes strong
Wish I could see this amazing women! I can watch the same video many times.....8m still amazed their performance! Thank you ladies.
Just glad the Rockettes still exist.
I love the Rockettes sparkle sequin outfits ✨
"Intense rehearsals required" noooo I never would have guessed.

Damn a girl I went to high school with is a rockette. And I’m in student debt.
I know how you feel...A girl I went to school performed in Beychella and with toured with Beyonce and Lizzo this year...
She’s probably in debt too. Rockettes make crappy money. It’s one of those “labor of love” jobs.
RanDumBlonde at least she’s in debt doing something she loves. I’m in debt over shitty profs
@@Unic0rnSnot Yep, you are most likely correct. Kind of like those business articles talking about the trend of people willing to work for less money in order to have a more "prestigious" title. I say gimme the CASH!
Yes, but you'll be paid-she won't!
I actually met a Rockette. But I didn’t know what she had been through when I did meet her!
Just watching this gives me body ache.. But I applaud them for their hardworking and efficient skills. I so want to join but ughhh I can't my body would ache from the over practice and muscles will ache.
When I lived in NYC, I made a point of seekng the Rockettes, and Macy's on Christmas Eve. Seeing the Rockettes was great, very impressive. and fun. Macy's on Christmas eve, at least that year, was terrifying...
I'm a competitive dancer, and you literally have to change in front of everyone in the changing rooms, often I had to change in the hallways of the building I was performing.
I changed down to just knickers at the side of the stage many many times
My dance teacher tried out but she was a quarter inch to short 😥
At BCFD
Even if I was young enough (I'm now 70), I'd never make it, being only 5'3". They're fun to watch, though!
My coach is like 5'2 and she made it!
4:54 WOW! I truly thought they could lean on one another for support but I get that that could topple into a mess lol. They are so impressive! 💓
How do they smile so much without it hurting 😧
went to the show a few years ago.....loved it! they are perfect
I would love to watch them!
Crazy!
Oh, and you should try undoing a bun covered in dry hairspray, brush it out, and try to twist it into that damn complicated braid!
Wow, i am impressed with each group performance.
Us Guys would catch up to equal opportunity options.
A charted difference for aparticular time separation between gender regards.
Even how the value of achievement needs recruiting grace?
Very good examples and standards.
I never thought i would see another dance group as strict as the NFL cheerleaders until i saw this! I also never heard of the Rockettes before
I have seen them before and it was amazing but I never knew they had to go through this
Such pretty and inspiring discipline
I hope they make lots of $$$ for all that!!!
Janet Pitts they don’t:(
They make like over $30,000 but their job is seasonal and not year round that's still alot of money though!
Sara Bement it’s really not especially in New York
@@bogiboglin2702 thank you Sara for letting me know!! Cool!
30,000 in 2 months loving what you do is kinda great even for New York standards.
I love to dance either to workout or to have fun. So I'm definitely not a future Rockette, but I do love watching them on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, they rock!
WAKE UP AT 6!!!! just for school I wake up at 5!!!
Emma _18 exactly!! Why are these “strict rules” shocking?
Why though? I used to get up early for school but that was because I spent 3 hours on a bus, not because of the courseload.
@@melodramatic7904 They're in New York... on the salary they make I doubt they live anywhere near the studio and company, so it might be a 3 hour commute for them as well. I feel you on the bus, mine wasn't as long an hour and a half, but Highschool was brutal because the bus didn't come to my area. I had to make sure I had enough time to get to the bus 1.5 hours to the trolly, 30-45 min to my trolly stop, and then a 20 min walk to the school. I made sure I left earlier then I had to just incase I ran into any issues along the way. I'd leave at 6 and be home at somewhere between 4 and 5.
Well you’re going to school. You aren’t going to practice dancing and other physical stuff for the next 6 hours (correct me if I’m wrong). You’re going to go sit down and listen to your teacher.
Guillermo Huapeo mic drop
I’m currently doing master classes with a former rockette and it is amazing!!
Things like about face are used in drill down for dance team
I saw the Rockettes in December 2010 with my family, it was awesome
I have loved the Rockettes since I was eight. They have always been awe inspiring.
If in NYC and the Rockettes are in the house cancel something and go see them. It is an amazing show. I never knew they never locked arms when they do the line dance. You can't tell in person.
4:28 I'm imagining someone being rude to one of them. They wouldn't survive the kick in the ⚾
I saw this show this year (2019) and it was awesome. Very up to date fun show I look forward to next year.
I knew a lot of these facts already but it still surprises me.
Quick Storytime:
Me dance studio did a Christmas show this year and we called or jazz dance the Rockettes because we did a kick line and the dance was really sharp.
Our dance teacher posted either the whole show or just that one dance.
A former Rockette comment on it saying that it was amazing.
She thinks that we could be the Rockettes someday.
I'm am dreaming of the day I can see the Rockettes in person.
It must be a struggle if they have to pee during the show
I was thinking that the whole time! 😂
