    Fun Fact: the Britannic's smoking lounge was changed and made to look a bit more modern than Titanic and Olympic. They removed the slanted walls for the windows and made the room boxy then removed all the stained glass to raise the ceiling

    • @harrietharlow9929
      @harrietharlow9929 2 года назад +3

      It"s a shame that they did that because the first class smoking rooms on the Olympic and the Titanic were stunning. The visual of mother-of-pearl inlays in the mahogany were gorgeous.

  • @Titanic_401
    @Titanic_401 2 года назад +23

    The Verandah Cafe on the port side, which is connected to the Smoking Room, allowed passengers to smoke inside and the one on the starboard side didn't. As a result it was less popular among the men, but on Titanic and probably on Olympic, mothers used it as a makeshift play room for their children since the ship didn't have one. On Britannic both cafes were connected to the Smoking Room and a children's room was added on the Boat Deck opposite the Gymnasium.

    They make the megademo better and better each update. The nighttime version adds a touch of warm colours, appealing the eyes and giving a realistic antique and vintage look to the ship herself.
    I never get tired of the view. And there's still much more to come next update with 2nd class and the remainder of 3rd class amenities. This is incredible and amazing work from the THG devs. They are really catching up fast and strong. I am deeply impressed.

    This is gorgeous. I am doing final research/editing on a Titanic novel and this gives me a very good idea of what the various locales on the ship looked like. Beautiful job, everyone!
    The Straus cabin is a dream. It also shows the talent of the woodworkers who did the labelling work and now, the skill of the modelers who have brought the ship to life in cyberspace.
    Speaking of half way nice Third-Class, my grandmum and aunt sailed to NYC from Cuxhaven on the Imperator right before WWI was declared and from pictures I I've seen, her third class accommodations were quite nice for the era. I suspect most of them were pretty nice because if the voyage in third-class was pleasant,passengers would write home and any family members who were emigrating would hopefully consider using the same line to travel.
    The third class on the Olympic-class ships was actually nicer than I imagined. The third-class smoking room is actually very nice for the time. No, it's not as fancy as first or second class but still very decent.

    I don't think Molly's husband was on the ship as they had separated as a couple by this point.
    The lights are probably turned down at night to economise on light bulbs and to encourage passengers to turn in so that stewards could tidy the public areas for the next day.
    Historical fun fact: as was the custom on many ships, Titanic had a Hebrew (kosher) cook who could prepare meals according to Orthodox Jewish dietary laws. For those not familiar with dietary laws for those keeping kosher, this means that meat and dairy items may not be mixed. In strict households there are separate dishes, dishrags/dispans, silverware and cooking utensils. Foods labeled pareve, such as fruits, vegetables, eggs, grains, and fish, can be served at either meat or dairy meals. If my memory serves me correctly the Titanic's Hebrew cook was also a rabbi, though I may be mistaken. Given how many Jews emigrated to the US, a kosher cook would be essential.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian  2 года назад

      @@mattc2094 It depends on what kind of content you make. Generally speaking, the more "fun" or "entertaining" the subject matter, the more often you'd have to post, such as anywhere from 3 times a week to every day of the week. But if you make content that is factual or educational, you can post less, like twice a week or even just once a week. I try to put out one "history" video per week, plus something a little more creative and fun to accompany it later. You won't experience a sudden boost of subscribers right away, for many people it takes months to even a full year before you surpass 200 subscribers. The best thing you can do to attract attention is a title and video thumbnail that really draw you in with curiosity, and then in the first 30 seconds of the video you must show something that hooks them in. And I can't emphasise enough not to make videos that are longer than they need to be. If it's a video about changing a lightbulb, there's no reason it should be 30 minutes long. You gotta keep to the meat of the subject, whilst still delivering something that satify's the viewers need to see "enough". That's how you build subscribers. Its a balance, its not straightforward, but eventually you'll fall into a rough schedule and that also will help with success. Good luck!

    Like someone else said, the small room off the maid&valet saloon was for the marconi operators and (i think) the mail clerks.
    Yes, the maids & valets would've shared their saloon. It would've been just like the Servants Hall and Pugs Parlor in the great houses. And in the servants hall there were fairly strict rules of decorum, which presumably would've been followed here too, for the most part.

    "English Breakfast Tea", or as us in the UK and Ireland say, "Tea" ;) The A La Carte restaurant was a fully functioning private restaurant. The passengers needed to pay to use it. Father Brown went down in history as father Brown but he wasn't actually a father until later in his life. I've never heard about Molly browns husband being on board, although that would be odd. She boarded at Cherbourg, so they would never have seen each other if he did. Witness statements say Andrews was last seen helping load boats. I imagine the idea of him standing at the fireplace was copied from A Night to Remember. The garden you refer to was known as Palm Court and not a garden.

    On your comments of Mauretania's passenger spaces, I'd like to take it a step further: I personally admire Lusitania's more lighter colors and beautiful use of sculpted Plasters over her sister.
    Also her barrel shaped skylights were very well done over her lounges. Lady Lucy is so underated in her interior style IMHO.
    People often forget as well, different countries reflected thier culture into thier ships during this time period.
    German and French liners for example were often overly ornate, even overwhelming at times.
    Lusitania, Titanic, Aquitania ect. tended to be much more muted in true Biritish style at the time.
    Worth mentioning if you wish to compare ships from various lines from the pre WW1 era.

    Thanks so much for this walkthrough. Before the discovery of the Titanic, I got every book on the subject I could find, then Dr Ballard discovered the wreck in '85! That was BIG NEWS. When the movie came out in '97 (then EVERYONE loved the Titanic) I couldn't stop smiling, not because of the acting or the story, but because it was the first time I got to see the ship in living color! Since then, I've followed several virtual Titanic projects, this being the latest, and have explored each of the demos. I notice that some things in a previous demo aren't available now, like Scotland Road. I also notice that you got the NIGHT to work but is unavailable in my version. I'm not sure why.

      It's not that I got something to work, they are constantly releasing updates to Demo 401, every time they release a update, you have to re-download it from their website. But make sure you download the right one, this isn't Demo 3, this is Demo 401. Just some comments while watching this - the starboard veranda cafe was basically the non smoking section (it had no connection to the smoking room) and was reportedly used as a play room for children.
    The starboard cabin on A deck belonged to Father Browne (no relation to Molly Brown - her husband was not on board, in fact they had been separated since 1909). Father Browne boarded in Southampton and disembarked in Ireland.
    The “Gentlemen” and “Ladies” signs are the signs for the restrooms/baths (most passengers had to share, even in first class).
    On the subject of Titanic being considered the “most luxurious” of its time - I think many people have a mythical image of Titanic in their minds that contrasts sharply with reality.
    We hear the phrase that Titanic (and her sisters) were built for luxury vs speed but luxury vs speed didn’t mean fine woodwork or private cabins for third class - luxury vs speed meant the Olympic Class Liners travelled at a leisurely pace that reduced vibrations during a crossing (a problem Cunard had with Lusitania and Mauritania).
    (You can’t put down Titanic, the iceberg did that for you 😅🙈)
    We also need to remember that a lot of what we hear about Titanic’s “luxury” literally comes from marketing that was designed to lure in customers.
    There were only about 20 female crew members so I think the smaller saloon is for the maids.
    Queen Mary is my favorite ship too btw :)

Speaking of which, i'm sure it's been mentioned a million times, but the two volume Titanic The Ship Magnificent set (especially the 2nd volume) is essential. But one thing i really like about this demo is the color dimension, which of course is completely lacking in the books/pictures.

      They are called cowl vents. When you point them into the wind, they catch the air and force it down into the ship. When you point them away from the wind, the negative pressure sucks old air out of the ship. In later years with larger ships the cowl vents would be used in conjunction with fans that could consistently push fresh air into several rooms on specific decks.

      You're the second person today to mention that 😅. Actually "val-et" is also correct. Both pronunciations are listed in the Oxford English Dictionary. People tend to refer to a personal servant as a "Val-et" and they refer to the guy who parks your car as "Val-ay". Though it's a matter of personal or cultural preference and the two pronunciations are interchangeable just like the word "either". [Ee-thur, eye-thur]

      Thats actually a very good question. The team who are developing the game are working with leading experts and historians to faithfully recreate Titanic to the best of their ability. They have traveled around the world to document artifacts, and have even taken notes of the characteristics and dimensions of remaining items from Titanic's identical sister Olympic. So the finished game will be THE MOST accurate anyone has gotten to the real thing.
      That being said this demo features some areas never designed to be seen by the public, but at the last minute they included them in the demo, flaws and all. And some flaws are intentionally put into the demo so copy-cats can't develope a game before this team finishes their accurate game. But I myself am confident in saying this current demo is STILL the closest you can get to the real thing until the finished game comes out.

    No offense but I just don't understand how you could claim Mauritania or Lusitania to be any more luxurious than Titanic as a whole. Firstly because stylistic judgments are entirely subjective so the whole thing is pointless in the first place. Secondly, because your arguments are marred in factual inaccuracies and disregard for auxiliary details. While the first-class cabins on titanic aren't all like the Strauss or parlor suites, they often had private bathrooms with tubs and wardrobes whereas Lusitania and Mauritania only had such accommodations in their most expensive parlor and regal suites (deck plans for titanic can be found here [1]). Also, while titanic did have variations of 6, 8, or 10 beds for third class on G deck, the overwhelming majority of them were either 2 or 4 person rooms and generally did not have bare steel walls but white wooden paneling. This was similar to Lusitania and Mauritania's third-class cabins at the time, which featured 2 to 4 person rooms (not private cabins) with the difference being metal bars for bed frames compared to Titanic's wooden counterparts. In fact, Mauritania had more third-class capacity than Titanic, and deck plans show that it did have group rooms of 6 to 8 beds in lower decks just like Titanic. Even a few second-class rooms had 6 beds (most of them had 4 whereas Titanic's second class only ever had 2 beds per room) and many first-class cabins in Mauritania had 3 beds in one room (source: [2]). Additionally, Mauritania's third-class general rooms, while similar to Titanic’s at a glance, had long dining style tables with bare wood decking compared to Titanic's combination of long benches, square tables with chairs around, and linoleum tiled flooring. Side-note: The second-class dining rooms in Mauritania and Lusitania just seem claustrophobic compared to the Olympic class. Titanic’s deck plans are also much more sensible and less confusing than Lucy and Mauritania since, on those ships, the veranda is looking straight out at a bunch of dome casings and the walls of the second class lounge, and its the same story with the poop deck which gets half its view obscured by a wall of second class accommodation and public spaces (refer to plans mentioned earlier). Mauritania and Lusitania also generally have more cluttered, asymmetrical, smaller decks that are just less pleasing to the eye (probably because any obstructions are painted a dark color which stands out against the decking). This video should give you an idea of what walking the decks on those ships was like [3]. Finally, the Olympic class had various amenities that weren't present at all in their Cunard equivalents, such as the swimming bath, gymnasium, palm courts, and Turkish baths. The only places where the Titanic is objectively beaten is in the third class dining room (Titanic’s looks like shit), the second class staircase, the third class promenade (though the Olympic class has something similar in Scotland road), and the first-class dining saloon but that's hardly enough to claim it wasn't the most luxurious ocean liner in 1912 overall (though I generally do prefer the color scheme and tiling on Titanic's first-class dining room as opposed to the other two's wooden flooring with carpets and I despise those gilded wrought iron fences on the second floor it makes the room look cheaply made). If you have any counterpoints id love to debate since I love old ocean liners and this is fun for me. *I believe the reason my comment keeps getting deleted is that it contained links so If you want I can like email the links that were in the original post and are replaced with [#] here.

      To be honest I don't have the energy for a typed-up debate. I think it comes down to personal preference. The two ships had trade-offs. While I think Mauritania had nicer looking 3rd class spaces and private rooms, they were definitely smaller. While Titanic offered more space, the spaces were lacking in the kind of luxury or style other ships had. You say that you still believe Titanic was the most luxurious ocean liner in 1912, well that depends, some people think luxury is the physical aesthetic, I however measure luxury on a service level. In terms of beauty, I mean take a look at the first class spaces on SS Kronprinz Wilhelm...they are WAY nicer looking than anything on Titanic by far...I mean that ship is hardly distinguishable from a royal palace. Anyway, I'm actually in the middle of making a video about this very subject, about why Titanic really wasn't ground-breaking in 1912. It was a beautiful ship, but aside from its size, I personally wouldn't award it any title that has the word "most" in it.

      @@AlextheHistorian May I ask where you're getting the idea that Mauritania had private rooms for steerage? This isn't shown in any deck plans. Making the service argument is also difficult since Titanic had more amenities and activities for their first-class passengers than other liners because of its size (even though some werent as lavishly decorated, its better that they exist and not be luxurious than to not exist at all, ex. the gymnasium). Though I agree that the SS Kronprince Wilhelm has much nicer public spaces, it's hard to judge the experience of being on it without knowing about the cabins (which also have bunks for first-class). The same can be said about Titanic. You've said before that not all cabins look like the parlor suites but most cabins don't look like the small one you used as an example in that argument. Just look at the first-class staterooms in the deck plans on B or C deck. There's a reason titanichg haven't released any of those rooms yet. If they were like the one you showed earlier they would be able to copy and paste it around the ship with minor alterations but every stateroom has a different style.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian  2 года назад +1

      Again the ships had trade-offs. I dont have the energy to haul out all my research just for a comment section debate, just wait for the video where I will present my argument. I will show images to make my case.

      @@AlextheHistorian White Star Line believed that showing pipes and steel beams in passenger compartments were good for buisness, pipes to prove that steerage had proper heating and plumbing, and steel to show that they were booked in a strong, secure vessel, they opposed too much panels in steerage since they beleived that it "covered up" evidence of it being less luxurious then it seemed, that is what I've heard, I may be wrong.
