Eddie Murphy had 3 comedy albums in the 80s: Comedian, Delirious, and Raw. On them he had bits where he impersonated several singers including Michael Jackson, Elvis, James Brown, and Teddy Pendegrass. It was the first hint that many got that he might be able to actually sing.
If you watch his stand-up videos, either "Delirious" or "Raw" you'll hear him sing and he does a GREAT Michael Jackson! You didn't know that was Rick James??? 😲
I felt really old when Rick James appeared on the screen and there was no recognition... And they made him sound decent in the studio, but you can hear how much stronger Rick James voice is during the little parts where he sings
They know him they just hadn't seen him. They reacted to his duet "Happy" with Teena Marie with no video. They are aware and hopefully they'll be reacting to his solo stuff soon.
For those of us in high school and college in the 1980s, Eddie Murphy belonged to US. He was OUR generation. Good song, thanks in great part to the late Rick James.
I had to comment. Eddie Murphy was a COMEDIAN first, then he got into movies when he wasn't performing his comedy. Then he got into music. The man is multi-talented. Eddie Murphy will always be known as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop movies.
I grew up thinking this song was somehow terrible or goofy based on how it was discussed on “I Love the 80s.” once i got older, I realized what an absolute BANGER IT IS.
Eddie Murphy started as a stand up comedian, then joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, THEN started his movie career. Also the guy with the blonde weave was Rick James, Who also produced and sang on the track. The shock on your faces was priceless, great reaction. Also if you two want to get back into some groundbreaking funk, you have to react to "One Nation Under A Groove" by Funkadelic. It's a master class in funk!
If you're Eddie fans, check out the best of Eddie Murphy on SNL, especially James Brown Hot Tub and Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood. He also returned and hosted a couple years ago. That show was amazing start to end and won an Emmy.
One of the coolest songs of the 80s. Eddie began his stand-up comedy career in 1976. He frequently provided background vocals to songs released by the Bus Boys; the song "(The Boys Are) Back in Town" was featured in the movie 48 Hrs. (1982) and Murphy's comedy special Eddie Murphy Delirious. As a solo artist, Murphy had two hit singles, this song and "Put Your Mouth on Me" during the latter half of the 1980s. He had started singing earlier in his career, with the songs "Boogie in Your Butt" and "Enough Is Enough", the latter being a parody of Barbra Streisand's and Donna Summer's 1979 song, "No More Tears". Both songs appeared on his 1982 self-titled comedy album. Love the reaction guys! Keep them coming!😊
This was Eddie's first music video he had others too like How Could It Be, Put Your Mouth On Me, What's Up duet with Michael Jackson and started in Dreamgirls which he sung his ass off please watch
One more thing; your reaction when you were both like “Eddie Murphy?!?…singing?!?!” That’s exactly how we reacted back then when we saw the video on MTV. I was like “wait!…what?!?…is he really singing?!?” It was a much talked about sing because it was so unexpected. But it definitely is a jam!❤️🙌🏼
The look on BOTH of your faces was too FUNNY! I just came to see your reaction! Not disappointed! Truth be told - That was the same reaction we all had back then when this first came out!
He has some of the raunchiest, most hilarious stand up routines ever. Eddie Murphy Delirious is one of my all time favorite stand up routines, period! Warning: not safe for kids! He also had the stand up routine Raw. I think he started doing a lot of squeaky clean, good for kids movies to clean up his reputation after these.
Now that y'all know Eddie can sing, Check out Bruce Willis - Respect Yourself" Bruce did an album called "The Return Of Bruno" and you should really check out this hidden gem.
Billy Bob Thornton is actually pretty good also. While stationed at Camp Lejeune NC i was voluntold i had to work a salute to the troops concert. Maroon5, B2K, and BillyBobThornton Band. He was good and a very nice guy. He hung out after performing and visited with the crew working signed autographs.
Another actor who had a singing career prior to going to Hollywood was, Mark Wahlberg. He had a hit called "Feel the vibration", with his group; The Funky Bunch. 😃
Eddie is very talented. The 80’s wouldn’t have been the same without him. Have you ever seen him when he started out on Saturday Night Live? Late 70’s early 80’s
If you watch his early stand-up specials, he often imitated famous singers like Elvis and Desi Arnez and did a fabulous job of it too! Eddie was the hottest thing ever back in the 80's. He was everywhere! : )
I had heard this song a good many times on the radio over the years, maybe decades, never really paying attention to who sang it. Then I caught it one time during lockdown, when they said Eddie Murphy, and it absolutely melted my mind. If you know Eddie mostly from the 90's, he was a comedian before he was a movie star. You should really check out his stand up DVDs 'Raw' and 'Delirious'. They're legendary shows. Just make sure your kids are not in the room!
This was a single from Eddie's album, "How Could it Be", which was made on a bet with Richard Pryor that Murphy could not sing. Eddie won. The album made #26 on Billboard's top 100, and "Party all the Time" charted at #2 for three weeks. Rick James wrote and produced the single and sang backup, and Rick James, Aquil Fudge, and Stevie Wonder co-produced the album. Murphy wrote three songs on the album and co-wrote two.
Eddie Murphy has quite a few good movies from the 80s. The Golden Child, Coming to America, Another 48 Hours, Trading Places (on my Christmas movie list along with Die Hard), Always watched him on SNL back when it was actually funny. Please check out Mary Jane Girls "My House".
BEST ONE HIT WONDER EVER!!!!!!! Still have it on a playlist in the car. I saw an interview where Eddie said he did his song as a $100K bet with Richard Pryor (I think that's right) that he could do a hit single. It went to #2 on the charts, beat out by Say You Say Me by Lionel Ritchie. Rick James wrote this and it was a companion song to Super Freak.
Exactly what I heard as well. Eddie Murphy was on fire back in the day. Imagine being so confident in your abilities that you bet 100k that you could take your skills to the other end of the spectrum. And succeed!! Thats crazy. And about his acting. Imo the greatest movie action/comedy duo of of the last 50 years Is Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte. Sure wish they made more movies like 48 hours.
@@jamesmcdaniel9601 I know! I loved Beverly Hills Cop too.His old comedy was so much better than The Nutty Professor and his PG stuff. He decided he needed to clean up his image after he got caught with a hooker.
Eddie is multi-talented. He came out as a comic on SNL and he sang in A LOT of sketches. He's an actor, comedian, singer, and he plays some instruments, too.
Yes, Eddie can sing, and sing very well. They had to ask him to sing poorly for Shrek when he played Donkey. He was a comedian first. Look for Eddie Murhpy - Raw
Another singing actor that had a song out about the same time was Don Johnson from Miami Vice, and currently on Kenan. His single "Heartbeat" reached #5 on Billboard.
Yeah didn't his co-star also release an album? Don said later he was shocked by how quick he hated the music business. Stars don't want to go on tour to have to support an album that music execs make all the money on
Eddie was primarily a comedian/actor, starting on SNL in the early 80's. This was at the height of his popularity in the mid 80's, and he had the power to make a record if he wanted. He made other records, but this was by far his biggest hit.
LOL Yes we were as shocked when he dropped this, but he KILLED IT!!!! Singing with Rick James no less!!! Eddie has always been sexy, even when he was a stand up comedian, and can dance as you can see!!! YESSSSS I JAMMED TO THIS SONG!
Eddie was a stand-up comic first and then went into acting. He has another song where Michael Jackson sings the hook. I’m surprised you guys didn’t see Dreamgirls with Beyoncé and JHud. He sings in the movie.
I grew up with Eddie, first as a stand up comedian and his early years on the cast of SNL. He then hit it big in movies. I believe the singing was more of a way to prove he could accomplish that goal. If you haven’t seen his 2019 movie “Dolemite Is My Name” where he draws on the 1970s blacksplotation Dolemite movie franchise, you should watch it. It earned him more praise and a 97% Rotten Tomato score.
A must have on any 80s house party playlist!!! Eddie did a song with Michael Jackson too! 🎶 You should check out "C.+C. Music Factory" and their song "Things that Make You Go Hmmm..." 🤔 it's another funny song that's a banger!! Keep smiling!! 😍
Mr. Kling....another song that belongs on EVERY 80s house playlist is BACK TO LIFE by SOUL II SOUL. It was at the tail end of the 80s....but it took us out of the decade dancing!
Here's a few more to check out, David Soul - "Do't Give Up On Us Baby" John Travolta - "Let Her In" Phoebe Cates - "Paradise" Patrick Swayze - "She's Like The Wind"
As others have undoubtedly pointed out, Eddie got started in comedy on SNL and later toured as an arena act. You simply MUST watch those shows, “Delirious” first then “Raw”…classic comedy from my childhood! Another great movie and one of his earliest acting roles was “Trading Places”, also starring Dan Akroyd…As always, Peace & Love from Georgia Y’all ✌🏻

A really good moving song and was shocked to hear back then Eddie Murphy was singing!!! If you have seen Mr. Rogers Neighborhood you HAVE to see Eddie Murphy do Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood on Saturday Night Live! The guy with the orange/red hair is Rick James super Freak’ you gotta do!
Eddie Murphy was the youngest and most successful cast member of Saturday Night Live. He was 19 years old then. He had many popular characters. His stand-up was far from family friendly. He is a devout Christian and lived rather clean compared to the eighties party scene.
BTW, that guy with the hair is Rick James. An absolute legend that unfortunately is mostly remembered for the Dave Chappelle skit, which is hilarious to be fair. You need to check out 'Give It To Me, Baby' and 'Super Freak', the latter which you'll definitely at least know the rhythm of.
Yes, I KNEW you'd both enjoy this one!! I'm glad you picked up after the video that it was Rick James who was the man behind Eddie Murphy's debut single. Another one of my requests to you guys, keep it up! 💯
First time I ever heard Eddie Murphy sing anything was in the Shrek movies. I had no idea that he could sing back then and hearing this, I'm blown away! Homeboy has depths!
His trajectory was: stand-up comic, sketch comedy on SNL (while still doing stand-up), actor in films, recording artist (while still doing films), G.O.A.T.
If you want to be even more shocked, check out Eddie when he was on Saturday Night Live. That’s how he got famous. He created fabulous characters like Buckwheat and Gumby. That’s how he got famous. The clips are on RUclips
Just saw the fade out scene in the video where Eddie and Rick make signs with their fingers, at 8:09, and immediately heard Eddie say "Oh Tay" in my head. Which of course is why they did it. Brilliant.
I always thought of Eddie Murphy as a stand up comedian first, then comedic actor. He knocked it out of the park with this one and only song. I remember people mocking him when they first heard he was coming out with a song, but they couldn’t help but love it once they heard it. It was a pretty big hit. Thanks for reacting to it! Haven’t heard it in years.
One of the first things Eddie got known for was singing impressions on Saturday Night Live - Stevie Wonder, James Brown etc. He had a famous skit where he sang with Stevie Wonder - you should look it up. So when he got famous, he made a song with RICK JAMES😁
Eddie's a gifted mimic. It's why he does a perfect Elvis, Jackie Gleason, Mike Tyson and Michael Jackson impersonation. I've always thought that helped with his singing career, but he'll always be the guy to beat when it comes to comedy.
We feel silly guys! We didn’t know that was Rick James! This video was recorded before we reacted to some Rick James 😂

I felt really old when Rick James appeared on the screen and there was no recognition... And they made him sound decent in the studio, but you can hear how much stronger Rick James voice is during the little parts where he sings
I kept yelling at the tv screen..."Rick James" and man, I'm stunned they don't know him.
They know him they just hadn't seen him. They reacted to his duet "Happy" with Teena Marie with no video. They are aware and hopefully they'll be reacting to his solo stuff soon.
"I'm Rick James Bitch!" 😂
For those of us in high school and college in the 1980s, Eddie Murphy belonged to US. He was OUR generation. Good song, thanks in great part to the late Rick James.
What a fun song. It always has been. And yes Eddie has some skill. Nothing this man couldnt do. What a amazing talent.
I had to comment. Eddie Murphy was a COMEDIAN first, then he got into movies when he wasn't performing his comedy. Then he got into music. The man is multi-talented. Eddie Murphy will always be known as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop movies.
And I believe there is a fourth BHC coming out in the next year or so.
He was great as Reggie in 48 hrs too.
As far as other famous actors singing a good song, y'all should check out Patrick Swayze's "She's like the wind". It's surprisingly good.
That is a good one! Love it.
What about Don Johnson " Heartbeat " ?
love that song!!
Bruce Willis did something too
one of my favorite songs, it touches my soul.
Eddy Murphy can certainly sing..
And Rick James as well.. “Super Freak” from 1981 will get you up and moving…
Must watch 48hrs movie with Eddie Murphy. He sings “Roxanne” from The Police!! Classic moment!! ❤😂🤣
I grew up thinking this song was somehow terrible or goofy based on how it was discussed on “I Love the 80s.” once i got older, I realized what an absolute BANGER IT IS.
This came out in 1985. The “guy with the hair” is Rick James. You haven’t reacted to any Rick James yet?! 🤯
Actually they did react to a song by Rick James and Teena Marie but it wasn't a music video and there were no photos.
White hair guy walking down stairs w Eddie
"Boogie in Your Butt" LOLOL!!!! Man, I'd forgotten that one. :D
This was not one of the coolest songs of the 80s. Not even in the top 1000. Terrible song.
@@chasingbirds3073That's okay. Not everybody likes it. :)
This was Eddie's first music video he had others too like How Could It Be, Put Your Mouth On Me, What's Up duet with Michael Jackson and started in Dreamgirls which he sung his ass off please watch
This was when Eddie was the trifecta. Comedian. Movie star. Singer. He was killin it in all 3 realms. In that order.
Delirious is the best Eddie Murphy standup act. Absolutely a must watch
He seems to be a pretty committed family man these days. Big kudos to him.
And coz he had kids.
Eddie would sing in his stand up, and people saw he could sing. It was a natural progression. I'm surprised that part of his career never got bigger.
Now that y'all know Eddie can sing, Check out Bruce Willis - Respect Yourself" Bruce did an album called "The Return Of Bruno" and you should really check out this hidden gem.
Agree strongly!
I loved that album
Oh ya!!! That was a good album.
@@stonebay2111 I had almost forgotten that he had a band! Thanks for the reminder! 😃
Another actor who had a singing career prior to going to Hollywood was, Mark Wahlberg. He had a hit called "Feel the vibration", with his group; The Funky Bunch. 😃
I think it’s Good Vibrations
If you Google this remember its MARKY MARK and the Funky Bunch lmao i still giggle when i think of that.
I think (not positive) they have already reacted to Good Vibrations.
Good Vibrations was The Beach Boys.
@@clicker7019 yes, as is this song, both called the same title Google it
The movie I always give as an example of aging well… Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy. It's as fast and funny and cool as it was in 1984.
Eddie was a comedian first, then movies, then this random song that was an incredible hit!
Eddie is very talented. The 80’s wouldn’t have been the same without him. Have you ever seen him when he started out on Saturday Night Live? Late 70’s early 80’s
In the movie "Another 48 Hours", we're treated to Eddie singing part of "Roxanne" by the Police and doing a decent job of it.
Loved that scene lol
Kids and PC people.🤣
"Delirious" and "Raw" were from the 1980s, not the 90s. By the 90s, Eddie Murphy was pretty much exclusively doing films.
@@wadsworthaaron that was my point. I think these two said they know him from Nutty Professor and Dr Doolittle.
@@dr.burtgummerfan439 😂 my own has heard worse out of my gob
Eddie can do so many great voices BECAUSE he can sing.
For Female Friday you have to do another Rick James production, the Mary Jane Girls doing In My House. An absolute killer track!!
That's a good one!!!! 👍
Don’t forget “Boys” and “All Night Long”
Eddie Murphy has quite a few good movies from the 80s. The Golden Child, Coming to America, Another 48 Hours, Trading Places (on my Christmas movie list along with Die Hard), Always watched him on SNL back when it was actually funny. Please check out Mary Jane Girls "My House".
Eddie Murphy can sing. He did a lot of singing in his movies and stand up shows. Actually has a great voice.
The movie career dominance lasted all the way through the 90s.
Eyyyooo this was my jam when I was 5 years old dancing in the living room
Eddie is multi-talented. He came out as a comic on SNL and he sang in A LOT of sketches. He's an actor, comedian, singer, and he plays some instruments, too.
Yes, Eddie can sing, and sing very well. They had to ask him to sing poorly for Shrek when he played Donkey. He was a comedian first. Look for Eddie Murhpy - Raw
Yes RAW will make u laugh like never b4
And before Raw, he did Delirious! I think it was even funnier than Raw, the way he deconstructs the original Star Trek and the Honeymooners!
Make sure the kids are not in the room for the comedy videos Raw and Delirious!
@@RLucas3000 Agree, Delirious was funnier than Raw to me.
Another singing actor that had a song out about the same time was Don Johnson from Miami Vice, and currently on Kenan. His single "Heartbeat" reached #5 on Billboard.
And Bruce Willis, too!
Yeah didn't his co-star also release an album? Don said later he was shocked by how quick he hated the music business. Stars don't want to go on tour to have to support an album that music execs make all the money on
@@yaimavol You're right, he did. I did not know that Don Johnson felt that way about the music business, thanks for the info. 🙂
@@salbro5985 Wow, you're right, I forgot about Bruce Willis. Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to go look that one up.
Eddie was primarily a comedian/actor, starting on SNL in the early 80's. This was at the height of his popularity in the mid 80's, and he had the power to make a record if he wanted. He made other records, but this was by far his biggest hit.
Gumby!! And Mr. Robinson. :--)
Thos song got to #2 on the billboard 100 list in 1985. This song was a real bona-fide hit. This was played in clubs and kn radio
LOL
Yes we were as shocked when he dropped this, but he KILLED IT!!!!
Gotta do Bus Boys song boys are back in town. They were Eddie’s opening band for every show. Awesome you’ll love them.
the movie 48hrs needs to get on the movie list
Morris Day and the Time --- Jungle Love. Rascal Flatts. ---- Life is a Highway. Or What Hurts the Most
This song was serious as a heart attack when it first came out, and it still holds up pretty solid in a dance club on "retro" weekends ‼️
@@sometimesboy that song is amazing!! Loved it since it I first heard it the radio!! 🥰
Here's a few more to check out,
David Soul - "Do't Give Up On Us Baby"
John Travolta - "Let Her In"
Phoebe Cates - "Paradise"
Patrick Swayze - "She's Like The Wind"
Don't forget Markie Mark n The Wild Bunch. (MARK WAHLBURG)
As others have undoubtedly pointed out, Eddie got started in comedy on SNL and later toured as an arena act. You simply MUST watch those shows, “Delirious” first then “Raw”…classic comedy from my childhood! Another great movie and one of his earliest acting roles was “Trading Places”, also starring Dan Akroyd…As always, Peace & Love from Georgia Y’all ✌🏻
Trading Places and Coming To America were hilarious!
He does sing with impressions. He’s so talented.
EDDIE MURPHY - 'Red Light' (ft. SNOOP LION)... a dope Reggae tune!
Always loved this song even when everyone was criticizing it. Great job Eddie and you guys🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😎😎😎
Right? I always loved it, but ppl would clown him. I don't get it.
@@tiffanyspencer2782 I with you Tiffany. It’s actually a great song and I guess everyone wanted something funny? Eddie has a great pop singing voice in my opinion and I always wanted more but I guess they beat him down on criticism. Thanks Tiffany
It was and remains awful. Somewhere there’s an interview with him where he jokes about his poor judgment making an album.
Bruce Willis has a song too
“respect yourself”
People (critics mostly) make fun of that song alot, but I really like it
Eddie Murphy and Snoop Dog also recorded “Red Light “
I'm going to comment before I even watch you guys reaction because I know back in the day how crazy it was for me to hear this for the first time one of the biggest surprises in music I had ever heard Eddie Murphy got off on this song.
lol..oldie but a goodie, another song from around that time was - Put your mouth on me ! fun fact - One of his latest hits was Red light feat Snoop Dogg ! 🎶👍
Jay and Amber, @2:44 - I love the dumbfounded “Holy c*** !!! This ain’t no joke - the man can sing” look. That was pretty much all of us when this song came out
There's a MadTV sketch about the making of this video, funny as hell, you should see it. It's almost like Charlie Murphy's true stories
"How Could It Be" is Eddie Murphy best song and music video!!! Amazing vocals
Yeah the great Mr Rogers wasnt thrilled...
"Look at what Mr Landlord gave me for Christmas, an eviction notice."
Eddie is a multifaceted entertainer...professionally, 1st stand up comedian, next acting, then singing
He’s got his own reggae band from before acting already, even sang with Snoop before
Eddie Murphy was the youngest and most successful cast member of Saturday Night Live. He was 19 years old then. He had many popular characters. His stand-up was far from family friendly. He is a devout Christian and lived rather clean compared to the eighties party scene.
He was Gumby, dammit!!!
When I hear Super Freak I think of the movie Little Miss Sunshine!
Eddie got his start in entertainment industry on Saturday Night Live. He was a regular cast member back in late 70s/early 80s
He was on SNL 81 - 85.
Written and produced by Rick James.
You should try Super Freak from Rick.
& Loosey's Rap
Amber's gonna blush!
HE KNEW RICK JAMES, WHO BACKUP SINGS, AND PRODUCED IT.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤❤❤❤❤❤
Eddie Murphy WAS the 80s lol. He was everywhere
One of the most addictive songs.
Yes, I KNEW you'd both enjoy this one!! I'm glad you picked up after the video that it was Rick James who was the man behind Eddie Murphy's debut single. Another one of my requests to you guys, keep it up! 💯
Always loved this song. Brings back great memories. Really enjoy the people having a lot of fun in the studio, too.
Eddie Murphy - Desdamona.
An AMAZING song.
James Brown “Hot Tub” … 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mr. Robinsons Neighborhood was hilarious too!
....Mr. White.
