    A tip I have heard from retro computing folks is to test the printing on ic chips with isopropyl alcohol. If it rubs off, it's a counterfeit. Don't know if that can help you, but I thought I'd mention it.

      @@PsionicAudio The amp I'm looking at has been re-capped 5 years ago according to the owner but he said he hasn't changed tubes in 20 years. The speakers look original. He wants $800 for it. It is the 85watt version. I owned a 135 watt '77 Silverface a long time ago and it would knock birds out of the sky flying over my house if I dimed it. Great cleans but eeegads the weight. Thanks for the reply.

    those chips are well know in analog Synth circles, is just an array of BJT NPN transistors. They are widely used in voltage controled filters (vcf), V controlled amplifiers (vca), and all kinds of things where you need control (even as a precision current source for oscillators, since they have a pair of matched transistors (q1 y q2, connected internally as a differential pair) and they are all together on the same piece of silicon, so they can compensate for temperature/current drift)
    CA3046/3086, LM3046/3086 are equivalents

    I owned one of these back in the 90s. Think mine was an 86. I had good luck with mine for quite a few years. I ended up selling it and buying a Twin which I used up until last year. I owned a JCM 2000 TSL 60 that I actually liked more than the 2210 as it had a great clean channel.

    Have a 4210 combo. Gutted it and turned it into a 3-channel fire breather just using the transformer set and doing away with the reverb tank and transformer!
    Amazingly, Marshall played with voltages over the years and this 50W has a low voltage PT running at like 400V on the plates!! I really actually like it lower and squashed and saturated. It's my favorite amp in the house out of like 20 amps!!..but did away with the Marshall BS!

    I had a 1987 and was good. I have now original 1986 and have only a little channel bleeding… for me this is a very good sounding Marshall. (Different from 2203 of course). If it was a garbage , norum and many others don’t use it anymore I think Maybe….

  • @arfer1470

    Hmmm, might have to do some mods when I get my 4210 out of storage to refurb it. I remember the switching circuit went wrong years ago so I will probably look at changing it. It's a shame your customer didn't want a proper fix instead of just a like for like repair. I would like to have seen what you would have done with it.

  • @Panhead49EL

    For a new tech, do you recommend keeping a stock of common parts, or order piecemeal with each job?

    • @PsionicAudio
      @PsionicAudio  2 года назад +8

      Hmm, when you're new you won't really know what you'll end up using a lot of. I try to keep the most common value (Fender, Vox, Marshall) resistors in at least 1/2W CF (though I also stocks CCs for restorations), the most common film cap values (same amps) mostly in Panasonic ECQs (they work in a lot of different amp layouts) and the "usual suspects" for electrolytics from F&T and Vishay. And Vishay 3W-5W resistors for screen grids, most common fuses in 5x20 and 3AG sizes, etc. But it can be a lot to lay out costwise when starting out.
      So the best solid advice I can give you is look at quantity discounts, and to learn how to navigate the Mouser and Digikey websites. A 34 cent resistor can be a 2 cent resistor if you order 100 of them. So let's say 100K resistors - if you do amp repairs you'll definitely use them all the time for plates. Odds are you'll want to order 100 of them, either CF or MF.
      But also learn to work the shipping. Mouser has a pretty flat $8 shipping charge for almost any order. So if I need to order something specific for one client's amp, I'll often go through my parts bins and think "hmm, I only have seven 2.2K CFs left." So I'll add 100 of them to the order. Because I don't want to pay $8 shipping for one 34 cent resistor because I ran out.
      But don't order more things than you have organized storage for. Ask me how I know.

    • @HandWiredAmps
      @HandWiredAmps 2 года назад +1

      For me, nothing worse than having to order parts that I should have in stock. Good inventory is getting thin out there and it's frustrating when you can't get .68 caps. Inventory is $$, but so is time. Really depends if you build or just repair, but some standard stocked parts are a given. It would be a good video to see/hear what Lyle thinks, but he does live near a nice parts house and I'm half a day from any real town.

  • @AndyK.23

    I agree! Those 2205/2210's were not Marshall's best. Poorly designed channel switching, chips/diodes for gain, etc.

    • @RozsaAmplificationLLC
      @RozsaAmplificationLLC 2 года назад

      yep. the channel switching. the fizzy tone, the meh channels and reverb. the signal bleeding. the super thin single-sided PCB traces that get burnt up!! As its, is a POS and timebomb waiting to explode...or at least fail!

      @PsionicAudio  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, it's fun. The seller had an A+ rating with lots of electronic component sales, so I thought it might be a safe source. And it might be. The listing never said the chips were tested, just that they were NOS RCAs. And so it's not unlikely that 2 out of 3 were bad at this point.
      There are reasons I put in sockets for all chips whenever possible.
