When rockers played these amps on stages, they used long guitar cords that robbed a lot of highs, a bright cap was helpful. You use a 10-15 foot long cord, loads more highs are going to make their way to the amp. Also you’re going to turn the volume way down if you’re sitting that close.
Great job, Lyle! I was intimidated by my friends' 1971 100W Super lead in my first band (circa 1975-77) We had a Rosac 4X8 Cab. When I plugged it in , smoke bellowed out within 10 seconds. I dove for the standby switch and saved the O.T. My speaker re-coning guy told me we overloaded the speakers by at least a factor of ten. Fast forward to 1985. Bought a 1972 Marshall 1987 50W head. Still brutally loud I learned how to jumper channels. Even then, could only turn to 2-3 in bars. Still love that sound, though. As far as your playing, just go for it. like when you say something wrong, we know what you meant. You are showing off the amp, after all.
Thanks for taking the time to explain about mic placement, EQ, compression, saturation and the difference it makes to the tone a guitarist hears on a record. Valuable information for all guitarists indeed. To be fair though your amps sound so good, they need very little processing - I wish everyone walked through the door with one of your pieces of art!
I get a very convincing non master volume Marshall tone out of my Brown Deluxe with a 75 watt Creamback. I’m still floored by how good those things sound with the right speakers. Really nice clean too, just not a lot of it. I’ve always heard that the Reverend used a Brown Deluxe on the first album. Totally believable.
You my friend are one great amp technician and amp builder I can’t wait for you to have some builds for sale to all of us tone chasers you know how to make an amp sing
Thanks. That was one of the owner's wishlist tracks, so I listened to it thinking about the sound, heard the riff and thought "that's simple enough" and played it for the first time in this video. And botched it, simple as it is - didn't have that one in muscle memory. Ah well, I let go of playing ego a long time ago. Just not enough time to practice with all the work. But I have a ringer coming over tomorrow to do a real playing video of this amp.
Lyle you have my most profound sympathy, I cringe all the way to the bone whenever I hear someone mention chasing the "tone" off a recording. (especially a 50 yr old recording) Forget all the variables of artist, guitar, amp, speaker and mic placement, tape brand and recording machine what did the producers and engineers do after it was cut? Beyond the basics its literally chasing smoke..
You can get close using the right approach. That’s about all we can do these days. There’s just so many variables. The most important is that every person on earth has slightly different ears, we’re not all hearing the same thing. Our audible memory is awful too, especially as we age.
That tone on "Gone Shooting" was pretty spot on ! People overcook it when they try to do a Malcolm Young, far too much gain - that was pretty damn close to my ears. I enjoy plugging in my Double Jet 5222, getting the Origin to just about breakup and playing (very poorly) AC/DC Rhythmn parts.
It sounds great! What model of Vishay caps are you using in this one? I wrote it down but lost it. Also, I’m very interested in hearing about making the presence cap do more mid focused things. There’s a mini Marshall build that’s up next and all I need are the coupling caps and a chassis/lunchbox. I probably will go with a 2203/4 lead JMP style w/6V6’s.
If you listen to going down to Mexico it sounds to me like 6l6's and I hear the sag from the 5u4. I have seen pics of Billy in a warehouse with about 10 fender v front supers. This was a great vid the tone sounds like nasty dogs and funky kings.
Great sounds and dynamics. My favorite are the very first one and the very last one. I enjoyed your playing too. At this point, is it a plexi with a pre pi master?
Love this amp. I have never heard such wonderful tones. Outstanding job Sir.

Hello from England, the best amp repair channel I've ever watched. Just subbed. Thank you.
I'm pretty sure this amp is the best Marshall I've ever heard! So much versatility. And the sound...

Playing loud is a skill all it’s own.
When I play through any of my major amps I need to be 100% committed.
Another great video, I learned so much about what’s inside the amp!!! Thanks again
Great demo Lyle. You’re a great guitar player. Keep ‘em coming!
Love hearing the 'opening riff' on your amp tests.. its soothing and hits all the important frequencies. Really liked this entire playlist brother.

Yep Me too, original spkr saved, 62' Brown Deluxe is highly recommended
Ya know its only a matter of time before your selecta cap becomes an in demand feature.
Marshall is probably putting it in production as we speak.
For the cost, why not? Great idea...
Love it. Sounds great. Really like the changes to the Normal channel!
Great tones there Lyle. The owner's going to be very happy. I guess those bright caps on Marshalls are the final ingredient.
You my friend are one great amp technician and amp builder I can’t wait for you to have some builds for sale to all of us tone chasers you know how to make an amp sing
Sounds great, should install a variatone pot and select the bright cap you want on the fly
Now I gotta go find my copy of Powerage. Your playing has What's Next to the Moon stuck in my head! Great vid, great playing, thanks!

Some great tones there mate. Killer.
Nice SG Lyle, you make good sound with it. Ok, it’s time to move on to your build.
Very nice

@@matthewf1979 Good point Matt, I believe people’s individual hearing are as different as people’s vision.

Think you meant “what’s next to the moon” don’t think he played gone shooting here, still….great Powerage tone🤘
@@colbyboggs5365 You sir are 100% correct - It is indeed Whats next to the moon!

Beware of hearing "sag" in recordings. It's more often a compressor release you're hearing.
7:42 sounds like The Hollies - long cool woman 😁
That's how much I failed at playing AC/DC!
@@PsionicAudio enjoyed your playing. Great sounds!
Great sounds and dynamics. My favorite are the very first one and the very last one. I enjoyed your playing too.
At this point, is it a plexi with a pre pi master?
Thanks. It's essentially the '69 SL circuit with the '67 bright cap and a post PI master.
ZZ Top!
put one in my Showman in '92. They're pretty cool. If you choose values carefully you get a good sounding and useful tone switch..
BTW you need to hear this with headphones or real speakers. Phone speakers can't do this.
Was ZZ Top’s first not a champ?
You know, that'll never fit back in the chassis with that cardboard box...
sounds muddy
Did you watch the whole thing or just the beginning with the Normal channel only?
