Shutup & Play - guitar tutorials
Montrose! Easily the best hard rock album of the 70's! This entire album will melt your head. Way ahead of it's time.
No freakin DOUBT Homeboy! Thee Best.
Ronnie Montrose Great Guitarist
He set the standard how Rock
should be.
Wow....grew up with this album, played over and over and over! So underrated. So happy you're teaching this to a generation who may have never heard of this. And don't forget a very young Sammy Hagar as singer! Thank you for doing this, and the background of artist he played with, so cool!
You about outdid yourself in choosing this one - Ronnie Montrose was such a beast riff guitarist! (R.I.P. , Ronnie)
So many 80's bands owe Montrose a ton of accolades for his influence.
Great choice !!
Well said.
I wore that album out. Sammy Hagar at his finest on vocals.
He actually got better and more range with time
Definitely that band understood rock and roll. Tone lyrics Arrangement all perfect.
Rock-n-Roll!!!!!
Hands down the cleanest, clearest, right to the point, guitar lessons on the tube. Its like candy watching these lessons with the incredible rock tone you get from that Les Paul and the great hard rock songs you teach. Thanks.
Homerun, outta th' park! When I heard this on my friends' record player after school in 1973 it was a turning point in my guitar life and I've never been the same. Great job!
Watching your videos has demonstrated a couple of things to me that have been profoundly valuable: First, you've used the same (fantastic-sounding) Les Paul for each and every lesson where you've needed to teach an electric part, yet, I've come away from every single video feeling that you completely nailed the tone of each original recording. I'm a bit thick-headed so it took me a year or two to realize that what I am most responding to is how perfectly you've gotten the FEEL and nuance of each song, as well as the tone. Sir, your playing has profoundly answered the question for me that it ain't about chasing gear and, man, I will be forever grateful to you for teaching me that.
I use to love to listen to Montrose back in the day. I didn't know all that about him Great song
Righteous lesson. Loved Montrose from way back when I was a kid. Another Montrose fav is Make it Last. Thanks for this.
Just when I start feeling good about my playing... then every time I watch one of your videos I don't feel that great about it anymore.
Great Album! I still have it on Vinyl after all these years and still play along with it
The licks on this song are sick!
Love the history lesson of Montrose! The ability to talk Montrose and then sway into Freeride to make your point and then back to Rock Candy...dude, do chicks just throw themselves at you? lol You can walk into ANY bar, restaurant, club and take the place over. That is POWER.
“Do chicks just throw themselves at you”😂😂😂
So much precision in your lessons. If ya wanna learn the song right and with all the details and nuance, your channel's the place to be!
I have watched many guitar lesson tutorials and you sir are by far the best. Not only are you a great player you are also a great teacher. You are doing a great service and inspiring countless guitar enthusiasts to pick up and play!
Good post VICTORY ... totally agree.
I agree! I've looked at tabs and all over RUclips and this lesson is dead on in my meaningless opinion. I saw Ronnie Montrose in the mid to late 70's and they kicked ass! It's a major influence for taking up guitar.
First off, your playing is some of the best I've ever seen. Not just here, but in all your vids. So perfect & so clean. The actual song itself is only just okay, but the guitar parts, and specifically you playing it here, is absolutely sublime. So so enjoyable. Near-perfect blend of crunchy rock riffs, bends, fills, etc. Keep slaying guitar my man.
Nice reply.
You are a great player, Sir. Thank you for showcasing Ronnie's skills and talent.
Excellent lesson on a signature tune of one of the greats! Ronnie lived nearby and
he will be greatly missed.
Great job on this lesson. Glad to see some of these older classics taught correctly. 5 stars.
Wow you really nailed the sound of Montrose.....rest in peace Ronnie! I had the pleasure of meeting him and Davey Pattison at an amusement park they had a Gamma show that night!
That first Montrose album is simply required listening for any fan of guitar/hard rock. Any of these songs are excellent primers for newbie players interested in blues based rock.
At the ripe age of 32 I picked up my first guitar and this was one of the first riffs I learned. 5 years later it is still one of the funniest to play! RIP Ronnie
I saw Ronnie Montrose in the early seventies when he was with Edgar Winter...smokin hot show and when he went solo I saw him again. I still have his first solo album and had Paper Money but it was on 8-track for those of you that remember, it went "kachunk" (track change) in the middle of a song. Thanks for all your work on these vids.
I like the way you explain things and the accuracy of your lessons. Great album.
Wow... have had that album since 1978!!! Sammy and Ronnie, what a trip. Excellent guitar riffs on every song on the album, but Rock Candy was the driver, unbelievable when it's cranked all the way up with subs pumping. Thanks for this and Purple Rain.
Incredible album. One of my all time favorites. Great lesson. Thanks.
Man, I got to say it don't get much better then the way you do it. It's a privilege to learn all these songs from you. As always another excellent job. Thanks
Great lesson as well as a wonderful history of Ronnie's playing.
I'm only 2 minutes into this man and I'm digging the s*** out of it dude I used to listen that back in the '70s you nailed it come on
you are the best sounding most precise artist helping us lesser players thanks for what you do!
gonna play this with my band on Saturday night! Thanks for the awesome vid!!
Moved to the Inland Empire CA a few years back & met a dude who hanged with Sammy when they were kids. & read his book Red it's very cool. This is a killer jam/lick
First concert I ever saw. $5.50 at the Rochester War Memorial in 1976. No bass player. Ronnie had a different guitar on every song. He sat on a stool at "intermission " and did a crazy acoustic jam. Great foggy memories.
Favorite Rock Album.
Kyle Drake. Mine too
They say you can’t improve guitar playing from RUclips they are wrong thank you. You are a very good instructor very detailed.
One of my all time favorite rhythm and lead driven rock R.Montrose songs with Sammy H slamming the vocals for icing. Always wanted to understand the licks in this one correctly. Thanks for allowing me to add this to my ax arsenal toolbox!
Excellent technique and tutorial as always. And your sound is fantastic as well. Thank you!
You have to be the greatest guitar teacher.on the tube...
Of course thanks Ronnie M and lesson dude you are the man- so awesome dude thanks for putting this out there!
Love this lesson! I'm a beginner and unlike almost every other guitar lesson RUclips out there, that over explains and makes it seem like you're learning quantum physics. Your delivery tone speed and hands on was simple exact and to the point. Thank you! Love your tone and guitar. Great song!
I learned this in like 88 or something and had forgot most of it, but thanks to you I have it again. Thanks so much .
Sweet! Love this tune.
Love the lessons and the history behind the music!
Dude - SOOOOO AWESOME - just perfect - thank you 🎸🎸🎸
One of the greatest rock songs ever. Thanks for breaking it down. Your Gary Moore stuff is great. R.I.P. both these greats. BTW they both played the same sunburst L.P. (A 59 I think?) It was stolen from Ronnie. One day Ronnie claims he saw Gary Moore playing i and contacted him about it. I wonder where it is now?
Thanks for for patience in making these tutorials, always informative.
Montrose has always been one of my favorites. I would love to see you show us how to play "Town Without Pity."
Thanks for this vid tutorial! Your tone is pretty spot on to RM.
I was a teenager when this album hit the airwaves, and I thought it just plain ruled!
I still do...
RIP Ronnie
OK, that does it! First, The Boys are Back in Town, now this??? I wasn't expecting this one at all but saw it and couldn't click it fast enough! I just put my money where my mouth is and sent you a $20 donation for that one. Everyone else who enjoys these should do the same. Thanks again! 🤘
Thanks for the memories, we ( band I was in at the time) played this so much that the pick slide actually wore our picks down. Good stuff and thanks again
I still have the 8 track tape from 1974. Alas I don't have a 8 track player. I still love the fact that the album was done on a Fender Bandmaster. Another player that swore by the same amp was the late great Edward Van Halen.
Kick ass. Great Lesson. Another fantastic job.
hands down, best sounding lp on the tube
Love your teaching style and video production.
You are rapidly becoming my favorite guitar instructor. Thanks for all these lessons!!
Thankx For The Quick Warm UP Saved Me alodda Time For Tonight's GIG- KUDOS- BRO'
Rock The Nation was the first song I was able to teach myself how to play some of Ronnie's licks and play it with eyes closed.
Great band with a really young Sam Hagar.
Nice. This one filled in some of the gaps I was missing.
Well I can't add anything more than others have already commented but great lessons and l love the enthusiasm and joy you show while dissecting the different sections. Well done! I have learned quite a bit from your videos. Again, great job.
Dude, That's a really good lesson. Your approach is perfect.
You're a great teacher and make the riffs easy to follow. Keep it up. Love it.
Great instruction! I've learned so much about technique not to mention songs. 2 licks clean are better than 4 licks dirty. Starting to learn guitar at 54 y/o can be difficult but sounding right makes you want keep it up.. Thanks!
Love it! Thanks for the vid. Too many "how to" vids on RUclips take forever to GET TO THE POINT, and I love how this vid shows you the song first, before it goes into which finger goes on which fret. Wish more guitar vids did that.
that sounds amazing. Gonna check it out right now!
Was in to Montrose before anyone knew who they were ! LuvMotrose#1 !!!!!!!
Dan, great job..you really nailed the song and tone.
Super! Thanks. What a great simple tune with so many sweet advanced nuances. Thank again.
Thanks for the info about Ronnie, I had no idea he played with Edgar Winters, Van Morrison (Wild Nights) and Boz Scaggs very cool stuff.
Can't say ever seen you before but you know how to do it 🤘 that was killer man. I was just watching Neil play this with Sammy " unrehearsed" and seen that badass LP and had to click. Kickass 🤘 love Montrose
missed this one somehow. great choice. that one slide just gives me chills. you use your thumb on the harmonic. interesting. I always use my index finger.
I saw Montrose perform this live in the 80s. Man, he was LOUD.
Great song and even better lesson. Thanks
what a killer riff !
It's just a killer rock riff that should go down as at least top 20 rock riffs of all time !!
Awesome man thank you very much and thank you Ronnie.
What a great song.
Hey...thanks for this, I didn't think I liked 70's rock music, but I think I do after all lol
Ronnie is so underrated its mind blowing
Never heard this song... sounds great! Terrific tone and playing as usual. Awesome!
Great tutorial on this epic tune! I had most licks many years ago, but would improve on the opening scratching pick slide that I never got to sound as explosively as he shows it here. Awesome.
Looking for cool the engines. Boston. Hope you can show that one some day if you see this. Your the best on here for lessons. Thanks helping me on all the things I've learned here.
Another great lesson! Right on the money. Thanks so much.
why do I learn so much more from u than just reading tabs....BECAUSE I LEARN HOW TO PLAY THE RYTHEM , timing and ear training just to name a few.
Best lessons, great songs and en excellent guitar player. Love S.U.A.P 🎸👊🏻
great video , great playing , great tone
Very well explained as clear as it gets! Massive tone Awesome stuff THAT is Rock AnD RoLl! Cheers
Your info about Montrose is as great as your lessons. and that's saying a lot.
Oh now your talkin'!! Great song! Thanks for doing this!
Nice work. Thanks -- you helped me figure out a couple things in this tune.
Great lesson and top notch production.
Guy! You are awesome. I used your video for Roll With The Changes and you are Awesome!
I've been a big Ronnie Montrose fan since the very beginning. He played and lived in the same county as I did. I've met him a few times. I have to be honest he's not the nicest guy in the world. But he's a hell of a guitar player. And I think with age he's mellowed. At one point he was labeled by guitar player magazine is the best guitar player of the year I believe. And his ego really inflated after that. And unfortunately it changed how he acted with people. But beyond that he went on to create some great music after the album that rock candy is on. Then after that band dissolved he went on to play in his own band gamma. They put two major albums out gamma one and gamma 2. I like those albums. They're not widely known or well known I should say. But there's some good music on it. It's very '80s hard rock but without so much of the glam. He's still plays occasionally I believe as Gamma But he doesn't bring in the audience that he once did. Remember I once saw him in about 1999 or maybe 2000 abouts playing a gig in the parking lot of a small shopping center in my town. I felt a little bad for him. This was the kind of venue that far lesser known local musicians would get. He wasn't all too happy about it.. Still he has had a huge influence not just ron ock music but so many famous musicians and groups like Sammy Hagar. And others that you have mentioned. Anyway I was really happy to see this lesson thank you so much for covering it. I would love to see a few lessons on a few gamma songs. But it might not pull in enough views.
hey i really enjoy learning about the songs you teach i like the fact you give some cool information about the song the guitar players through your tutorials ive definitely become a better guitar player i look forward to all of your lessons..
having just watched Sammy Hagar play this.... this is almost note perfect.....
Love your accuracy to the original!
I contribute , you should too ..... keep the site alive man .
I hear a little bit of Robin Trower in there too, the fill after the E during the verse. 👍
I hear that to EC
And thats where i learned my licks👍🎸✌
just tuned in to hear the guitar! great axe!
Kick ass cover! 🎵😎
One of my preferred songs from Montrose would be " Dancin Feet " " I Got The Fire " & " Paper Money " from that era
