People always dont know the difference between potential and execusion. Penacony in HSR had the biggest POTENTIAL to be amaizing. But the pacing, yapping and storytelling was so bad...yet people call it "peak". We are at a point where people havent played a real good story...and can now only compare gacha stories with one another. If you want a good gacha story...as stupid as this sounds...play Nikke. They make you care more about any character 10 times faster and easier despite having so much fanservice and only 2D models.
Agree. I think this is the main reason why the Aventurine patch is so loved by the community. Instead of trying to slam every single playable character into the story for no reason (Boothill and Jade have little to no screen time), Hoyo chose to hyper focus on Aventurine story and their effort paid off.
2:50 , Guardian Tales at 2:23 already have all 3 of them that you asked for. Each worlds story just hit the spot. Each story just hit the players feeling. Things you do in the story while going through it doesn't feel out of place (Genshin could never, lmao "witness"?). The references and funny stuffs just make the quirkiness of the game. That said, 8-bit type of game is not everyone favorite, plus the game hardly have any ads so yeah...
As someone who has been here for a while, I’ve seen a very destructive trend where a story starts off really bad but then becomes somewhat good after a year or two, and I really don’t like this trend. It’s one of the reasons I stick around with limbus company despite the artsyle (aside from its gameplay) and became a project moon fan, it started in a unorthodox way, grabbing my attention from the get-go, and made sure that the characters act.. in character. Why do most gacha games not do this? I have no clue. But it’s a refreshing breath of fresh air.
If you want examples of this destructive phenomena, HSR(debatably), Hi3, genshin impact (arguably), punishing gray raven. (I’ve only mentioned from the small pool of games that I, personally, have played.)
@@fishtonk5506 tbh hi3 is very old so back then the story was acceptable and on the scale of the game (45chapters) the story got really good by chapter 7 then took off at chapter 9 and so forth
Love the nuance you bring to the conversation! Personally I'm a huge fan of what WuWa has been doing lately with its camera framing/movements (among other things) to make things more dynamic rather than looking at character standing next to each other yapping away. ZZZ has lots of different ways to present its story and think it's quite a shame to see it use the classic stand and yap thing as much as they do. It's really tough me for me to get hooked when a huge chunk of the story is very mundane and there is needless yap about said mundane things, with presentation not helping it. Hope things get more interesting as we go cause it currently isn't really doing it for me ahah
The worst part of discussing world-building with the gacha community is that most don't seem to understand what it actually means. It’s become clear to me that many don’t realize that the world story and lore dictates the character stories. from a development stand point, its just a rule set on how the world functions to prevent contradictions, or if their is a contradiction they know they need to explain why there is a contradiction. Wuthering Waves has a great foundation but messes it up with a main story that feels too fast paced. mostly in the war section of the story. I understand the budget constraints and they had to go through rewrites, but it's disappointing if they don’t fix it because it affects future stories. It constantly contradicts the world stories and character stories with out really explaining why. there are reasons if you look for them but it really takes effort to find. The war section of the story makes no sence, and still feels like a tutorial when at that point you should know the basic mechanics of the game given that you are required to be level 11. They started by building a great world and then shifted to redeveloping it through character stories or messed up main story. Minor adjustments and a better quest tracking system could make a big difference. With jinhsi having control of time, they could have her reset the game for existing players as a future quest, then continue from the begining. letting existing players keep the items and characters they already have, while also giving new players a much better experiance, and it wouldn't break current lore and story, giving the development team a reason the have a chance at better world lore.
I've been with GFL sincr release but i still dont understand what's happening by the details in the story up to this point. But holy sht i can't stop reading the story bcs of how well it's written.
Presentation matters a lot, agree. I love Arknights story but there is so much yap that is unvoiced and the only thing game is showing you are two static pngs like bro am I supposed to patiently read this for five hours straight naaaah I’m good
ion think a lot of gacha games can really afford to tell really intricate or involved stories w/o sacrificing player retention. I think really the only way for that to happen is a studio or company to either be set on having a niche or already have a niche from previous works. Pgr, r1999, ak and like 2018 hi3 are examples i can think of for the former as those games started to appeal to a niche (less so hi3) so could afford to put more resources in the story. Limbus and Fate:GO are examples of the latter since type moon and project moon already have their feet wet in story telling, so their mantra is more focused on telling a narrative and building from there rather than building everything at the same time to appeal to everyone tbh.
PGR has pretty good world-building and yet majority of players dismiss it as boring and unnecessary. but tbh i like PGR's VN-like way of storytelling because it avoids unnecessary bloat in storage. considering the attention span of gamers right now, a gacha game with the storytelling of a Fromsoft game would be ideal. no. actual linear storytelling, a lot of lore are from item "flavor text", and immediately throws you in to the gameplay. those who want the story and lore can look for it, and those who are not interested can play right off the bat. and yes, gameplay is still king. Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia has a story that you can entirely skip but the difficult content is something that will keep you engaged if you like classic turn-based combat.
Think a compelling story really does that the cake. Still to this day, I vividly remember the cascades of emotions cropped up by Arknights main story revolving around Frostnova and Patriot. I havent felt so much guilt and remorese clearing stages in a gacha before. Probably my reasoning behind a firth belief and loyalty towards that franchise and dev team to let them cook. Also... "Children of Ursus" still haunts me in a pleasantly traumatic way.
As a player who always try to get into the story of every game I played, from my experience in gacha games, Guardian Tales and Path to Nowhere can stay in my top 3 gacha games that have a very good story forever. Those 2 are masterpiece. Even the event story are actually pretty good. Unfortunately they might not be popular due to not being exposed much to the audiences or being a niche game.
The face i made at the description for snowbreak, i only played a bit of it and couldn't get into the story and now I'm like... Damn maybe i dodged a bit of a bullet, at least with my own tastes
I love hoyo's game especially Hsr, but i can't stand Yap fest in their story, it's just monotonous, sometimes they put a character that has nothing to do in the story and force us to follow their story.
Nikke is the one I felt in love, with stories like Overzone, man those writers are on steroids I love that is pretty balanced and easy to follow, not pretentious and doesn't need to see a video explaining things But gatekeeps people with their "so much skin showing" so, most of the people playing are open minded to let the story happen with a "girl" on bikini Anyway, it's fun to me in gameplay at lategame, it's manual at most, so yup W take
imo the massive usage in the visual novel format is not just cost but also time. Games are getting updates every 3-6 weeks consistently pushing out multi-hour quests. It just particularly doesn't translate well to 3d models imo. The unvoiced quests has the time factor, but i think it's also the dreaded mobile storage especially since most gachas are played in tandem with each other.
If a cutscene can be presented as visual novel, then characters can just do the same mouth movements and basic idle animations while camera moves around.
Nope, gameplay 1st for me, story would skip unless its a game I've been waiting for. But if the gameplay compelling enough, then I may take the time to revisit the stories I skipped.
played for the plot and personality of the waifus stayed for the true plot and story 😂 I need more story for my Nikke 😂😂😂 I do fear for the continuation of the story of BlueArchive since one of its directors have stepped down/quit
Bruh, Nikke has a Godlike story I swear man, that game is too good to be true, straight to the point, no yaping, no Unnecessary dialogue and full of plot twist, Nikke has the best world building and best character personality period.
I 100% agree with your thought on ZZZ and HSR. Overall, I think HSR has the better story (it's been out for longer, but even the Cocolia arc was pretty good), but they way it's told is horrible, it's the same for Genshin. Mihoyo tends to add a lot of yapping that it's incredibly frustrating because the way their VN style scenes are set up you can't skip to the next dialog if there's an animation playing. Mihoyo also tends to add a lot of purple prose and edgy dialogs that are unnecessarily convoluted to make the story sound cooler and more mysterious, and they kinda abuse that in HSR sometimes. ZZZ while the story so far isn't amazing (heading in a good direction as it seems there will be an over arching story arc), the way it's told feels less bloated and the best so far from Mihoyo. HSR's story with ZZZ's style would be probably the best. Now on a side note, a game that does story surprisingly good is Nikke, yeah that game. The story is unironically good, it doesn't have yapping or unnecesary exposition, you are told what you need to know and you learn the rest organically without someone stopping to explain it. It has great and surprisingly detailed worldbuilding and the pacing is also good, it doesn't waste your time during the story, and overall, I think it has the best story of any gacha game at the moment. In my opinion, the story and obviously the characters carry Nikke hard, consistently making 10 or 20 m a month and must be one of the most profitable games when you consider the cost of development for that game compared to the other games in the top 10.
Totally agree, Limbus Company, Path to Nowhere and Reverse1999 based purely on aesthetic are totally my types of games. They're dark, they're moody and has a unique style that set it apart. But, after 1 year of PTN, 3 months of Limbus and a whopping 2 days of R1999, i just lost all interest. You can have the most Shakesperean story, the tearjerker, mind-boggling adventure known to gacha kind but if i don't actually enjoy playing the game long term, it just doesn't matter to me. If I wanted an amazing story, i'll turn to novels, games and other media that can provide a complete experience. Stories in gachas are tools to keep you coming back for more and to make you spend more. For me, gameplay is still king, the story being the queen.
I mean it gets harder and harder to sell a story when the majority of the player base are in for the quick dopamine hit of, well, gacha. And guess that's absolutely not a quick dopamine hit? Sitting through hours and hours of (yap fest or not) dialogues.
A lot of the stories in these games have bits and pieces of good stuff in them, but the yap sessions ruin it. I actually love Genshin's story, but it's a slog to get to the good parts. Genshin is definitely the worst for this since they don't even allow you to skip. They need to cut down on the VN-style face to face dialogue a lot to make it feel like they aren't purposefully adding filler to waste your time. And it's also not that VN-style is bad either. That's subjective, and I personally have read a lot of VNs. It's just that these gachas tend to add a lot of dialogue bloat. Likely to artificially increase word count due to the live service model, rather than adding important and compelling details to the story.
Arknights worldbuilding + covering multiple parties travelling while keeping things chronologically coherent is is on par with full-fledged novel series epics like Wheel of Time. NIKKE manages to balance humor and emotional beats shockingly well, and better than any Marvel/Disney movie has at the very least. Too many people haven't experienced good writing whether in gacha nor actual prose, yet are suddenly experts because they played the most mid exposition-dump-heavy style-over-substance Hoyo games. It's really unfortunate.
I usually agree with your thoughts but I really can't understand how you praise Fromsoft's lore but say that Genshin butchered its (for the record i consider lore and narrative/story different things) and gave careers to Island XD and Ashikai. Both DS/ER and GI have amazing lore, but GI also brings parts of that lore to the forefront of its storytelling and often fumbles the presentation a bit (not the writing) while Fromsoft mostly leave it as a background thing and I don't feel it's fair to say that the game that tries to do more (and by your own words in the video set the trend in gachas) does it worse overall.
Coloured me surprised.... It's not like genshit community finds it unfair to have any kind of criticism towards their beloved perfect game. Mihomo has been making shit ton of money for years now, with their game, it's already the end product, it's not about "trying" anymore, it's about "doing". You may not like FromSoftware way to deliver lore but at least we can skip the lore if we don't care about it because as they say "genshit could never" :D
FGO gameplay maybe outdated, doesnt mean its not fun. Even though thats hell your walking to, the story so amazing good and characters from other series.
it isnt fun, its full of rng bs to enhance the difficulty, the gacha rates arent fair, which means people wont even have the chance to get a new character and prove it and the grind is unsufferable with terrible rates, repetitive events and no interesting mechanics to try them out, The story is also nothing special because its presented in a light novel format, but keep coping until the eos of that game
