amazing, I studied clarinet for 10 years in a conservatory but I never been able to sucess the laughing effect while playing klezmer, thank you very much
What a fantastic video. Not only do you play it so well, but I've never heard it explained to throroughly and articulately. Keep posting videos! You're awesome!
@merlinmichaeshepherd Of course you can produce "laughing" effect on closed classical mouthpiece but it is more difficult because it doesn't give you much freedom of bending the notes. The more opened the mouthpiece and the softer the reed the more bending you can produce. Thats why armenian, greek, turkish folk clarinetists use very soft reeds and opened mouthpieces. Thanks for comment, Merlin!))
It depends on the model of the mouthpiece. Laughing effect will be possible if the mouthpiece is designed for jazz music. It is more difficult to bend the notes and achieve the laughing effect on the classical mouthpieces.
Profile 88 gives you the convenience of holding it in the mouth. The difference is the outer shape of mouthpiece only so it is not really affects on tone or glissando.. I personally like the classic profile. For the Greek music you need German system clarinet, as it is more convenient in terns if fingering and tone is better for this kind of music.
Hey Oleg, I recorded many CDs playing Klezmer Music using a Vandoren Austrian lay mouthpiece. This is a very closed and profoundly classical mouthpiece. I used a #4 Austrian cut reed on it and could make all the "laughing" and other ornaments that I wanted to. It's not about the mouthpiece it's about what you do on it.
Thank you! I could never figure out how to get this effect before looking at your video. I'm glad you also added that it works best on a very open-faced mouthpiece.
I came across an online discussion about which instrument is the most expressive. Some people went for guitar or piano which, for me as a piano player, sounds like bs. Though bowed instruments surely come close, I still think the clarinet has to be the most expressive instrument out there. The way it can mimic the human voice, as you clearly showed in this video, is actually disturbing. And I have just realised the reason the 'laughing effect' sounds so much like a real laughter is because exactly the same mechanical process happens in the vocal folds when a person is laughing (a glissando of sorts that gradually raises the pitch of the voice followed by a sudden drop or fall). You can try and see for yourselves at home, it's quite fun....
I recorded several CDs including "Intimate Hopes & Terrors" using an Austria lay classical mouthpiece on #4 Austria cut reeds. It is easy to create that particular ornament if the set up works for you. Now I use a more open mouthpiece than a 5JB with #1 French cut reeds. Go figure.
How is the technique for the klezmer sound on clarinet different than classical/Western? I know there are a lot of ornaments and sounds like this laughing..but it seems the very sound is different..more..strident and sharp. Do you use a particular reed or a something other than Bb?
@JoeGancher It doesn't matter what he is using, it just depends on how good you can drop a note. I can only do a 1/4 step, but my band teacher can do a scale from one note.
Hello Oleg, you can describe me how to do these laughter on the clarinet? not not understand because I speak Portuguese, very adimiro you, is an incredible musician, from already thank you very much.
Hello Oleg! From Brazil, thanks for the lesson. Very helpfull! but i can't do it so well on a 2 reed, only with 1 1/2... What reed (size..measure, i don't know how they call it in english) do you use?? 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2
u should all work on your voicing, once you can voice, u don't even have to move your jaw, it's almost like you are "singing" notes as you play and you can do this much easier....that is once you get the voicing down...which is sometimes frustrating to learn. i wouldn't really reccomend anyone moving their jaws for this maybe it could get inefficient? maybe not. what ever works for you! hope this helps anyone.
sure I know the notes, I've played it at hundreds of Jewish weddings, including one the night before last...but maybe you should ask Oleg to transcribe it for you.
If your neighbours already hate you, you can practice this all day just fine.
😹😹😹👍🏼
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂👍👍👍👍👍👍
I can't find any safe areas to practice this

A thumb up for you playing Klezmer. I love it and I am not even jewish...

I can't believe I've never heard of this, this is amazing.
Use the reed number which suites you. It depends on your ambusher and the mouthpiece. Try several reeds and choose the best you like.

I play Klezmer and jazz music on this setup. Sometimes even classical.

Oleg Thank You very much I found your teachings very helpful .

Write "Laugh" above the notes.
the sound...... O_O awesome!! is there a tutorial on how to make the best sound possible??
Thanks for this vid, is very helpful. The Vanderen mouthpieces are the best. Nice shadow on wall behind. ☺
INTERESTING!
Oleg had a grandma in Odessa for sure.
This is really informative :D I was wondering what gave Klezmer music its distinct sound.

i use 2 1/2, it is best to start you off with clarinet.

@JazzYugioh1022 Khosn Kale Mazltov. I have a video tutorial for this tune. Check the video description.
schallom. thank you Maestro
hi, is it possible for clarinet to play glissando within the interval of semitone? e.g. D to D#, is it called pitch bend? thanks!
@JoeGancher It doesn't matter what he is using, it just depends on how good you can drop a note. I can only do a 1/4 step, but my band teacher can do a scale from one note.
Well done👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😻😻😻
I would like to know whether this techique can be applied to saxophone using the same method

Hello Oleg, you can describe me how to do these laughter on the clarinet? not not understand because I speak Portuguese, very adimiro you, is an incredible musician, from already thank you very much.

I couldn't here that mouthpiece number. I have a VD B46 and a 2RV (5RV), Are these OK or what was it you are using ?
Exactly!

this klezmer piece is very famous but I have the title on the tip of my tongue: what is it pls ?
odessa bulgarish
It's called chosn kale mazel tov
+nickdu83 Or in English 'Congratulations to the Bride's Groom'
the melody is a yiddish one called "khosen, khale mazel tov". "groom, bride good luck", it's a wedding tune obviously.....
-_- This is similar to the horrible sound I was making when I first started clarinet. My dog is never gonna be able to hear again...
Christian Ortega lol

Esmeralda Miguel yes
Vandoren 5JB + Vandoren 1.5 must make this effect easier to produce than Vandoren 5RV + Vandoren 3 :'(
@ChristianOrtega123 ikr

this is kind of funny... because he cant effectively communicate by talking, but he can by playing his intrument. Music is a universal language.
Nice tie! =P
It's not that long..learn it by ear
Greets from Russia.
Bahahahaha!! that is so cool!
